Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Iraqi and Kurdish forces recaptured Iraq's largest dam from Islamic militants Monday following dozens of U.S. airstrikes, President Barack Obama said, in the first major defeat for the extremists since they swept across the country this summer. Militants from the Islamic State group had seized the Mosul Dam on Aug. 7, giving them access and control of enormous power and water reserves. Obama called recapturing the dam by Iraqi and Kurdish forces a "major step forward" in the battle against Islamic State militants.

Not that impressive considering the IS doesn't put up a serious defense of anything. They relocate, mass, and attack something else. They'll wait a bit, come back later, and steamroll the Kurds left to secure the place. The bulk of their forces are reported as moving on Aleppo right now chasing off Nursa & Islamic Front, very far from Mosul. We're still pretending the Syrian border exists, so our bombers can't go pound on them, and if they did we'd have the political fallout of supporting extremists who are only marginally less extreme than IS.

Couldn't have happened. Obama pulled out of Iraq and considered it finished. :)

But they do get to keep their doctors.

Too bad the A-10 Warthog is being phased out. Put a couple of them against a convoy of ISIS Toyota 'technicals' and let the sausage-making begin...

No casualties for our side and the enemy has suffered great losses!

Yup. The whole thing is just another excuse for fascist terrorism committed by the American empire.

If you seriously think that any of its actions in Iraq have been because it cares about the indigenous population then there is nothing that anyone can do to help you understand: clueless.

After all Shawn America never helps people in need.

Not in the Philippines, not in Haiti, not in the Soviet Union.

America's just a monster.

Correct. It never does. What it occasionally does do, as in the examples you cited, is create a big mess before the cameras get there, and then send 'aid' with cameras in place.

Here is what the left doesn't know. That Dam on the Tigris holds back a couple of cubic kilometers of water, at least. It was poorly designed and the construction is iffy. What would happen if the heroes of the left blew that dam? The answer is about 4 meters of water in the suburbs of Baghdad traveling at about 70 KPH. To give one a comparison, the Johnstown flood would have about 8% of the effect of this dam suddenly failing. Think of a wall of water 20 meters tall hitting a city of 5 million.
Why do I call these miscreants Heroes of the left? They kill Christians by the thousands, they say they want to kill Jews by the millions. The alliance between the Islamist and the hard left is too well documented to say it doesn't exist.

Shawn, I was in Haiti in 1995, I worked my ass off. We built a schools and hospitals. All the while carrying firearms, there was no law at all. I have friends in the Philippines. Any assistance those islands have received has been from the US by a factor of 10. You might want to remember that the old Soviet Union was trying to kill us for 50 years. They wanted to invade western Europe and dominate the world. They really were an evil empire. All your revisionist fantasies will not change the facts.

BTW I bet my left nut I have spent more time in Mosul than you have.

In other words, because you're trolling.

The alliance between the Islamist and the hard left is too well documented to say it doesn't exist.

No. You're nuts. The PLO was a "hard left" organization with strong ties to the USSR. In the early days, Hamas was funded by Israel as a hard-right counter to that. See Also: US support for hard-right mujhadeen in Afghanistan around the same time.

While I to tend to agree with the "horseshoe theory" which says far right and far left (the ends of the horseshoe) are closer to each other than they are to the middle, religious fanaticism is a hard-right thing. Saddam Hussein was hard-left in the fashion of Stalin and he kept these religious wackos in check, by exiling, imprisoning, or executing them. We created the power vacuum by removing him, then ensured Iraq could never govern itself through de-Ba'athification.

BTW I bet my left nut I have spent more time in Mosul than you have.

You must have quite the collection of chocolates!

I'd like to be able to say thank you for your service, but the mission was so monumentally stupid that by carrying it out you really screwed the pooch.

I'm just glad the world finally ended when we helped those thousands of people off that mountain and out of a genocide with a few air strikes.

It was way overdue.

Congratulations, but this doesn't affect that aggregate fact that the American empire made Haiti was it was, and still is. You are a band aid applied after the homicide. Your actions, while not completely meaningless, don't change the fact that the American empire conducted, and continues to conduct fascist terrorism for its own interests in that region; which have resulted in it being the mess that it is.

Rather then refute my prior point, "What it occasionally does do, as in the examples you cited, is create a big mess before the cameras get there, and then send 'aid' with cameras in place.", you have made it.

Thank you.

Haiti was hell on earth before their was an American empire. We did not improve things, but we're not the ones that caused the initial conditions. That would be the English and French. It became a graveyard for their armies and is a series of epic military disasters. At the time we were running guns to the locals instead of exploiting them, that came later.

Garbage. It was quite deliberately made what it was by colonial powers, whose policies have been continued by the American empire. There is no ambiguity what so ever.

None.

The more you post on this the more I think you've never actually read about the Haitian Revolution, Dessalines, Rochambeau, Toussaint, etc.

At least you managed a post without the word "fascist" in it.

Then you are definitely reading me wrong. I'm not from the hope & change crowd. We must have not read the same books on that revolution, yours seams to leave out what all the heroes of the revolution did to each other after they won. It is tragic reading. The only guy that was maybe fit to lead, Toussaint, got setup and imprisoned by the French, and was succeeded by a butcher who made himself dictator and was later assassinated, kicking off a long chain of local dictators and assassinations. It has been hell on earth since the first slaves were imported. No matter who runs it, it doesn't improve.

"the critical theory line of the Frankfurt school for a few years now."

The Frankfurt School's critique of industrial civilization is as relevant now as it was in the 60s, in fact, more so.

You are obfuscating fascist imperialism by saying that the USA doesn't control the weather. It has created the economic depravity, ousted democratically elected leaders using paid military coups, etc. It is fascist imperialism whether you like it or not.

I also mentioned how there was a time things got so bad in the USSR we were even nice enough to help them.

There never was a constructive critique of this country or an honest evaluation of anything by the Frankfort school. They were German Communist whose singular purpose was to destroy this country, by debasing the institutions that they knew made it strung.
