Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, August 18, 2014

Jim Jeffords, the former Vermont Senator who turned over control of that body from Republican to Democrat when he quit the GOP and caucused with Democrats in 2001, died Monday at a military retirement center in Washington, D.C. He was 80. One of the most liberal senators during his time in office, Jeffords had previously served the state in the House of Representatives. President Barack Obama said that Jeffords never lost the "fiercely independent spirit that made Vermonters, and people across America, trust and respect him."

His leaving the GOP was really a bell-wether of what was to come as to the increasingly polarized state of affairs in the GOP. He was to independent and to willing to shun the rightwing of the Party to remain. He was a true moderate. Today, we would just label him a RINO and disregard his hopes of ever getting elected.
