TPM: The city of Ferguson has retained the public relations firm Common Ground Public Relations to help its communications department in light of the ongoing turmoil in the St. Louis, Mo., suburb and the firm appears to be staffed entirely by white people, according to the photographs of staff members on its website. Common Ground is "assisting the city of Ferguson's media relations department with the large volume of media queries," Common Ground's Nina Kult told TPM. "We're just assisting in handling the large volume of queries." The "Meet The Team" page on Common Ground's website seemed to only display Caucasian employees. When asked how the apparent lack of diversity on their team might factor into Common Ground's work for Ferguson, given the heightened racial tensions there over the death of 18-year old Michael Brown, Kult declined to comment directly on that aspect of their work.

"We're just handling media relations as of very recently and that's really all we're doing. We're just handling media queries and that's all I can really say right now," Kult said.

When a book is written on how not to handle a racially-charged controversy, Ferguson's responses will be at the top of the list. I chuckle when so many assume that the best candidates always get the jobs particularly when things like this pop up. Perhaps the young ladies pictured are at the top of their field in consulting and PR, but I doubt whether they have acumen in understanding how black people feel and respond when a crisis happens to be dropped into their neighborhoods and lives through the actions of law enforcement within their community.

I can't think of a more relevant time to have someone with personal, intimate knowledge of the dynamics beyond outside observation. It likely would have come in handy.

If anything, it'll be an interesting campaign.

"Ferguson Hires All-White PR Firm to Help With Image"

Well of course it's an all white PR firm. Not as though there's gonna be a black motivated enough to work for a PR firm, them bein' culturally lazy and all. -- ROBTHOMAS

Don't tell that to ZED:

To be honest, at least intellectually, you should credit that people who stand outside of a behavior often get to have special insights into a behavior.
The word "objective" comes to mind.

According to ZED, Ferguson is just trying to be "objective." About as objective as Jimmy Swaggert on gays. [/snark]

Honestly, I'll give the PR agency a shot. I would have preferred a more "inclusive" dynamic considering the circumstances involved, but only a few reasons to believe they will be incapable of doing a good job. Which leaves plenty more to believe that they will be just as capable.

Shut the heck up! Good Lord - really? This is a city in crisis and it's a good community. And yes, black and whites do get along in North St Louis County although no one would dare report that. It's much more "newsworthy" to stir the pot. And it's the out of towner's that are causing the greatest issues. People should take a look at their own community - I'm sure you can find something that needs fixing.

Well if they had black employees, we would discover that they aren't being paid the same or that one had gotten fired and it wasn't fair. Something would be criticized so maybe it's just as well.

There's nothing wrong with their being white.

It's dumb to hire them for this though.

They didn't want a 57% chance that a black PR firm employee believed the city cop was guilty of murder.

If the hired a black one somebody would bitch that they weren't gay.

What do homosexuals have to do with the questionable demographic representation of this PR firm as related to the situation in Ferguson?

I don't know much about PR firms but are they large companies? If not then maybe finding firms staffed with any black people might be hard.

Not a lot of black people working in my industry either......

When you go black....you never come back.

Well, I would beg to differ. You might get the crabs. That's what I got from the last one.

I think it makes sense. You want to appeal to the white people and make them happy. I'm confident that these ladies can do this job. The black people can just be shot if they are fool enough to act up.

You mean gentle giants jaywalking again? Or "protesters" smashing their hoods back to the stone age? Or protesters shooting other protesters? Your type of rhetoric is the driving force behind these displays of stupidity. -------- on people trying to help doesnt do any good. Do you want ebola? Cause thats how you get ebola...

The Coming Race War Won't Be About Race ~ interesting contrast between Kent State Shooting & Jackson State University in MS in the 70s.

"On May 14th, 10 days after Kent State ignited the nation, at the predominantly black Jackson State University in Mississippi, police killed two black students (one a high school senior, the other the father of an 18-month-old baby) with shotguns and wounded twelve others.

"There was no national outcry. The nation was not mobilized to do anything. That heartless leviathan we call History swallowed that event whole, erasing it from the national memory."

Suggesting people can't do something because of the color of their skin... bunch of racists.

Another race-baiting idiot. (How's it feel?)

No has has suggested that this firm can't do a pr job. What is questioned is whether they have the experience or knowledge in defusing a racially charged situation when thousands of lives and millions of dollars of property stand in the line of fire. It might be useful for any firm in this situation to be cognizant of both sides and understand that the manner and tone used in releasing information may be as important if not more important than what the information might be.

It doesn't take a "black" firm to do this, but it certainly seems logical that an understanding of the black minds of Ferguson's citizens (and their likely responses to government disclosures) might help in doing this job.

I guess we'll find out whether they're up to the task or not, but Friday's disjointed pronouncements and releases by the police department points to precisely the types of avoidable situations Ferguson walks into seemingly every day.

Hiring a black PR firm to deal with black people under the assumption that all they care about is the blackness of the person delivering the message is something my racist uncle would do.

It won't matter who they hire when they announce that they won't be filing any charges against the officer. That's why they are doing mulitiple autopsies and delaying this investigation until they can figure out what they are going to do. The officer has six years experience and according to what I've read he has never been disciplined even once for anything.

#26 | Posted by Dalton at 2014-08-19 10:52 AM | Reply | Flag:

Witnesses have already said there was a scuffle and everyone w/ half a brain knows you can't scuffle with the police. I'm not saying this young man deserved to die over it you just have to be smart enough to know better. It's pretty clear that the media blew this story just like all stories when it comes to race when they tried to sell us the gentle giant was just walking down the street and the cop decided to kill him.

Its also been established that the same department doesn't discipline officers for abuses, at least not in every case. At for a while they didn't even track complaints. So his clean record doesn't mean anything.

As I said last week, my clean driving record doesn't mean I don't speed, run red lights, or commit other driving crimes; it just means either I have not been caught or the people who caught me choose not to charge me. Either way, my record is clean and my driving is not.

And why does the RACE matter. Why do you liberals always bring up race?

Notice how you have put the country back to the 1960s in race relations. But of course that is what you wanted ...wasn't it?

#31 | POSTED BY FOSHAFFER

We only overcame 1960s race relations moderately. Those who study this topic refer to the current era as the "age of colorblindness." Civil Rights era was not as effective as many would like you to believe.

What? You think Affirmative Action was that effective? It wasn't a cure-all and many agree, as you apparently do, that we have regressed.

You want to blame liberals? They are definitely part of the problem (you mistake me for someone else). But the systemic racism inherent within the criminal justice system, evidently has had a far greater impact upon this regression than anything else.

Want to learn more? I'm more than willing to provide.
