Jay Adams, a famous Southern California skateboarder depicted in the movie Lords of Dogtown, died Thursday during a vacation in Mexico of a heart attack. He was 53. Adams, known as "The Original Seed," was one of the Z-Boys, a group who became known for their tricks in the '70s. "This is a great loss to skateboarding," said his manager Susan Ferris. "A true legend died."

I wonder what Tony Alva and Stacy Perralta have to say about his? That was a great performance by Emile Hirsch as Jay in "Lords of Dogtown". The video has some nice moments of the early skateboarding craze of the 70's and looking right now at my board with those same green Kryptonics.

I knew Jay, I skated with Jay, back in the days when you had to buy a blank and have Wes india ink the DogTown designs and give you a nickname. Mine was "Perch" because I was too poor to afford a wetsuit but would go bareback all winter and stay in the water till my lips turned blue.

At one time we had a ramp built up on our garage. It was 15 feet with 3 feet of vertical. Not many of the boys could tail tap that ramp but the sessions we had were epic.

Jay was never the same after the Starwood incident. He just went downhill. He started calling himself Zipperhead for a tatoo he had.

Jay had charisma but no business sense and a lot of people made a lot of money off him but very few shared.

He died in Mexico? I wonder if he was at La Salina?

RIP Brother, all is good now.
