Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, August 14, 2014

Boing Boing: A news crew, clearly no threat or impediment to the cops, films from a verge in Ferguson, Missouri. A pop and a cloud of white smoke marks the arrival of a tear gas canister at their feet, and the news crew is forced to flee. Moments later, police pull up in an armored van and hurriedly try to break down the film equipment -- until they notice that another crew is still filming them from across the street. "Al Jazeera America is stunned by this egregious assault on freedom of the press that was clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story," said Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America. "Thankfully all three crew members are physically fine. We believe that this situation must be investigated along with those involving our colleagues at other media outlets."

It's Al Jazeera news so they should've been gassed. Why would Al Gore sell his Current channel to a Middle East propaganda network is beyond me.

"Middle East propaganda network"?? Really? I don't seem them that way at all. Those cops look real brave in their armored car and swat uniforms carrying automatic weapons to battle a news crew. I'm so impressed.

So the cops undoubtedly knew that what they were doing is wrong.

Anyone think any effort at all will be made to discipline them?

if you support non-stop interventionism overseas you shouldn't be surprised when the ideologies that support pumped-up militarization come back home (along with military hardware) to infect the law enforcement communities around the country:

inveterate interventionists, and even the nytimes, just don't get it...

What an absurd thing to say. Maybe you're joking, but if so, it's hard to tell. You should try watching their news, or check out their website. They do a pretty credible job covering the news. Regardless, there is no excuse whatsoever for what the police did here.

a Middle East propaganda network

I believe they are insulated from political influence in their reporting and commentary.

A lot of the differences I see are just due to the fact that some people might have a different worldview than we do in North America.

I think it's as good a news source, if not better, than many we get over here.

Something is very wrong with the leaders in that town.

It is like they are doing everything they can to make it worse.

You don't start at the bottom to change a corporate culture. You fire the police chief and strip him of his pension for starters, and that will start to bring back some sanity to community policing that will benefit all the citizens. A police state is not a free state.

Al-Jazeera gives another perspective that we need. The media should represent many diverse USA and world interests, instead of mostly the demographics of Israel.

PS: I just heard that the entire Ferguson PD was relieved of duty.

raw footage, not being talked over by some idiot like wolf blitzer, rocks.

If true this is the first good news I have heard from there.

Anyone else hear this? At least they got to play with their toys before they got put into time-out.

News crews should bring gas masks if they want to cover violent protests. It seems like a pretty common sense piece of kit to have. That, a fire extinguisher, water, and a first aid kit.
I'd say a new pair of sneakers, but the protesters would probably just rob them.

Are civilians allowed flak vests and bullet proof vests? If so, that sounds like another important piece of gear for covering riots.

I was thinking that as well...being AJ and watching the video it would have been amusing to see them just pull out the masks and continue.

Course, then they started shooting at them with rubber bullets so maybe they would also need those clear safety partitions like MythBusters uses for their explosive myths.

Not I. Could be that because there are more than just a Ferguson PD presence some people think that is the case, but first I heard of it.

Update: I do see some reports that the St. Louis County Police are being relieved of duty in Ferguson, but that's it.

We are building into a violence peak in the 50 year cycles. (Articles and discussions have been posted here. As a matter of fact one of the sites long timers has a paper on the subject. Is it Reich?)

I would hope the people would prevail but the thing is these are repeating cycles. You can't make everybody happy and you can't do it forever. We humans are a fickle bunch....

Wow.
Makes one ashamed to be an American.
Just wait until the investigation is complete--either the locals or the police will riot in the streets of Ferguson...

They just pull the entire police off of riot duty and replaced them with the highway patrol.

LOL!

But on a serious note, during the WTO riots in Seattle the mayor issued a decree making civilian possession of gas masks illegal. I wonder if that's happened here.

The police have become the military. The Posse Comitatus Act forbids the Federal Government from using the US military against the US populace. The kind of police activity pictured above is simply a way to circumvent the law.

Fascist terrorism..

I predict they will starting taking people away in the night on suspicion here in the states soon.

I love how while the two cops are taking down the equpiment one is sweeping the house with his AR...as if there's gonna be a turrorist popping up at any moment in the window.

Jesus it's scary how much these tools want to play GI Joe.

I was under the impression that there were local cops as well as officers from surrounding departments and the state troopers.

yeah, read another story where the fibbies were supposedly taking control.

Another scary thing is that there are no dash or body cams in the Ferguson PD. Lots and lots of military equipment tho.
