Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, August 11, 2014

Among the many victims of the advance of The Islamic State in the Middle East are a group of up to 50,000 Yazidis, who are trapped in the mountains in northwest Iraq without food or water. Suddenly thrust into the limelight by their plight, the Yazidis will not welcome the glare of international attention. On account of their unusual beliefs, they are often unjustly referred to as "devil worshippers", and have traditionally held themselves apart in small communities mainly scattered across northwest Iraq, northwest Syria and southeast Turkey.

Estimating their current numbers is difficult, with figures ranging from 70,000 to 500,000. Like other minority religions of the region, such as the Druze and the Alawis, it is not possible to convert to Yazidism, only to be born into it.

Their own name for themselves is Daasin (plural Dawaaseen), which is taken from the name of an old Nestorian -- the Ancient Church of the East -- diocese, for many of their beliefs are derived from Christianity. They revere both the Bible and the Koran, but much of their own tradition is oral.

Due in part to its secrecy, there have been misunderstandings that the complex Yazidi faith is linked to Zoroastrianism with a light/dark duality and even sun worship.

An interesting overview. Makes you want to learn more. You can certainly see parallels to several other major religions.

Take a good look, they might not be around much longer.

About 20,000 of them have already escaped the mountain trap with a few air strikes and Kurdish help.

"Who, What, Why: Who are the Yazidis?"

All the MSM needs to know is they aren't Christians.......
Then their cause means something.

Bruce,
They had a homeland......

I saw a lot of the Yazs on my second tour in Iraq, I guess I wont see any more. Tolerance, Islamic style. There are also 80,000 Christians missing in the north of Iraq, they more than likely are a problem for the Islamist that is being solved right now, permanently.

Yep, look around the Islamic world.
Look at all the non-muslim communities that existed for well over a thousand years in many part of it.....

....until the last century.

This is a culture wide, deep rot, that the Islamic world has absolutely NO INTEREST in dealing with (except over lunch with liberals, but absolutely never where they might have to face their own thugs....).

Deal with it or be dealt with.

They are the ones whose children are losing their heads at the hands of the peaceful Islamic State

NerfHerder, it is easy to blame your own, seems to be a favorite pass time of the Left. But facts are facts, all of the genocide is going on in our absence. I was there, these folks love death as much as we love life. At least that is what they say.

Come on now...we aren't absent! ISIS is using our ammunition, so we're there in spirit!

Well we should partition it off and let them officially have it and run it themselves. We should help them defend it. Up to 70% of them are being killed.

Yes. Lets establish a pseudo-Christian colony for this cult in the middle of The Islamic State. Brilliant idea. It couldn't possibly go wrong.

Are these people sharing the same land as the Kurds, or are they Kurds? Either way, Turkey has let it be known they will not allow a Kurdistan in northern Iraq as they also have a large Kurd population in southern Turkey and they don't want their Kurds wanting to join Iraq's.

Only for the Israelis, because they're running a very slow moving genocide campaign. They also provided all the troops for their efforts. The Yazidis don't have infantry, or years of insurgency experience to build a fighting force from.

We can purchase them all of those things! They just have to help us out when we need a favor.
