Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

With just weeks before the new Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School opens in southwest Fresno, community and church leaders are calling on Fresno Unified School District to reconsider its hiring of a white teacher to instruct African-American, Latino and Southeast Asian studies there. "We're just saying what the community wants. We didn't fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies," Rev. Karen Crozier said. "We still are at these racial fault lines, and we want someone who will be able to think critically about those racial fault lines and how do we help heal, to restore the problems that have existed."

Crozier and others were dismayed to learn the person hired to teach the school's three cultural studies classes is white. District officials initially considered hiring a teacher of color, she said, but ultimately hired Peter Beck, a former teacher at Hoover High School.

I can't believe he's being judged by the color of his skin and not the content of his character. Where is Rev. Sharpton?

Just goes to show that they view this subject as a sham and all they care about is creating a job reserved for a person of a specific race.

I took African studies in college and my PHD in African studies professor was not only North African but white at a glance.

I wonder if they'd let him teach their precious children?

Good job by keeping the racial fault lines there by implying that a white person can't think critically about them.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a law that prohibits any classes that.
Are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group, or that advocate ethnic solidarity. Taking away the freedom of elected school committees, and local tax payers to decide what is best for their own schools. (Arizona is a lot like Russia, without the charm or the oil)

The open racism on the Left is quite astonishing.

Tell us just how denying this teacher his current job is akin to the systemic discrimination of ALL white people for simply being white? Racism entails the societal use of laws - or the lack of enforcing them - to keep otherwise deserving people from opportunities solely for the class they belong too.

Having said that, unless the teacher is unqualified on the subjects, those asking for his dismissal are racist in the manner they are doing it. The only issue at play should be the teacher's experience and qualifications, not their race.

That this is news, really tells everything of meaning about the story.

That it even comes up, says it all.

The teaching credentials and attitude of the chosen White teacher, Peter Beck, are beyond reproach; and a former student gave a glowing recommendation.

The Rev. Crozier stated she wanted a person with more [critical thinking skills]. i doubt she even knows the meaning of the term. She expressed dismay a person not of color was chosen to "teach our babies." This demonstrates a clear infantilization of these students entering an important stage of maturation.

There are intelligent and articulate Black professionals; the question is whether they are willing to make the sacrifices apparently required to excel in (and endure) the teaching profession. (i ultimately was not willing to do so.)

"African-American, Latino and Southeast Asian studies"

So, do they require an African-American, a Latino, AND a Southeast Asian to cover the position?
Or, as it now seems, three positions?

After all, Reverend, how on earth could an Asian cover Latino studies?
And do we need a Vietnamese-American, a Thai-American, a Laotian-American, a Burmese-American, a Cambodian-American, an Indonesian-American...they're all different cultures, yes?
Et cetera.

And why just Southeast Asia? Korea, anyone? Mongolia?

If anything, a teacher from NONE of the above cultures is more likely, in my opinion, to be able to cover ALL of the above cultures.

"We still are at these racial fault lines..."
Yes, Reverend. And you're the one with the goddamn jackhammer.

This is not surprising. This kind of thinking happens too much. Us vs. them.

If you want critical analysis, wouldn't someone who is not alleged to be on your side be more capable of being critical of the current situations?

Outside of the red herring raised by those trying to defend their race based bias, there is no excuse for this behavior and it should not be rewarded.

They should hire Tiger Woods to teach it, he's a self-annointed Cablinasian (1/4 African, 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Thai, 1/8 Cheyenne, and 1/8 Dutch). Doesn't sound like he's going to be golfing again anytime soon...probably has some free time.

I'm a white guy who raised 4 black kids. Being more culturally sensitive than I am now, I made it a priority to learn the history and culture of Black America. Waste of time, Marcus Garvey and Fredric Douglas never came up, Dr.Dre and Snoop Dog did. I would say after 23 years on active duty, I have lived with and worked with more people of color than most white people, and that ethnic studies stuff is as relevant to the young men I have known as the heroes of the reformation are to an atheist.

Reverse culture shock?

In California, you will be politely asked to fill in the job application, but if you are not bilingual (English and Spanish) you may not get the phone call --- or if you are not fluent in Engrish and Mandarin, sorry we need someone else...

I think the Whites are still at a great advantage, but in some places it is becoming a liability as far as getting jobs is concerned.

And what idiot wants to "restore the problems". This clown is nothing more than a community organizer who couldn't get a real job.

Whenever you disagree, you cry "racist". It's what small minds do. It must be miserable living in such a small, confused mind and you appear to be a miserable person.

Takeitez, I'm not sure what the law says about being bilingual, but I don't see it the same as this. There are, at the very least, some good reasons for wanting a bilingual teacher. I could teach the cultural studies talked about here. I could not talk to a Latino kid in his family's tongue.

#37 | Posted by pragmatist at 2014-08-05 05:49 PM | Reply | Flag:

Pragmatist ... I'm not knocking on bilingual skill, but jobs that does not really require bilingual ability should not be discriminating against certain people.

3 Years ago I was in a work situation where the manager started hiring people who speaks her language (Spanish) and started focusing on all my faults and eventually let me go after finding a 'perfect excuse'. She is smart in the sense that she pre-planned to 'hire' someone to replace me while putting me on target. She is smart in an evil way.

I am not bitter at all as I have moved on with better things... actually looking back I feel sorry for her because in due time she will 'taste' her own medicine unless she repents, for 'vengeance' (justice) does come from above in due time. Mercy is extended (and this is where people should change), but those who continue in their evil ways will face a time of reckoning.

Has the white teacher offered to teach the class in blackface? That might solve the whole issue.
