Is there a way to break the cycle of revenge and violence to the benefit of both Palestinians and Israelis? Some say yes. Sari Bashi, an Israeli who works on freedom of movement for Palestinians at Tel Aviv's Gisha advocacy group, argues that were Israel to reduce the economic isolation and help living conditions improve in Gaza, it would yield a peace dividend for both sides. "Economic strangling is destabilizing," she says. "If restrictions on the movement of civilians and civilian goods are lifted, in the wake of this fighting, then we have a chance, not just of delaying, but actually preventing the next round of violence."

More than 20 years after the 1993 Oslo Accords laid out a framework for a Palestinian state and an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza that began in 1967, Palestinians still have no state. Though Israel withdrew its settlers and troops from Gaza in 2005, it still controls the borders, airspace, and even telecommunications frequencies of both territories. The number of Israeli settlers in the West Bank has tripled since Oslo. "As long as there is occupation, there will be resistance, whether it is Hamas or someone else," says Palestinian Suheil Bedah. "But if Palestinians can take our rights, our needs, then all this would end."

The violence will end once Palestine decides to stop bombing Israel. It's very easy. I don't understand why "advocacy groups" never recommend this?

Is it because they know the Muslims wont accept it? Well if the muslims wont accept something, why should the Jews?

Return the lands and stop the encroachment and they will.

So long as Arabs in general and the Palestinian leadership in particular believe that Israel has no right to exist, the violence will continue. Also, it might help if Hamas stopped firing hundreds of rockets at Israeli civilian populations.

But that's just me. Seems like many (most) of you believe the violence will never stop until Israel stops being such a party pooper and bends over t oallow Hamas to murder them at will.

When Arabs and Palestinians acknowledge and accept the right of Israel to exist and live in peace, the violence will end. Simple.

If only only Arafat had agreed to Oslo. He got everything he wanted in it: a state, the end to settlements, open borders, everything.

He said no, because "Israel must be destroyed".

End of story.

The Charter identified Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine and declares its members to be Muslims who "fear God and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors." The charter states that "our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious" and calls for the eventual creation of an Islamic state in Palestine, in place of Israel and the Palestinian Territories,[2] and the obliteration or dissolution of Israel.

If he didn't agree to it why did he sign it?

So the basic idea, if I understand the article, is to create a UN force made up of countries that have Israel in their hearts.....

Today the UN is being used by Hamas, for hiding weapons, and when found the UN gives them back to Hamas.....

Just curious, if Israel did this, you think it will get better?

You wanna break the cycle of violence, annex all occupied territories, and make them districts within Israel, and give them a vote for representation in the Knesset..

Clean out all extremist terrorist cells with ruthlessness they deserve.

It will meet all current Palestinian peoples desires, plus they will get recognition of being an Israeli citizen within the Israeli court system, and et al.....

The "stealing" of land issue disappears.... land transfer happens within one court/economic/governmental system.

#14 He didn't sign it. Where did you read he did?

If Arafat had signed the Oslo accords, there would be a Palestinian state today, and peace.

He refused to sign because "Israel must be destroyed", citing the PLO constitution (which calls for the destruction of Israel).

I think it was in an article about the Nobel Peace Prize he got for signing the Oslo Accords.

Ah, your right. I wonder what I was remembering....

"Since we cannot defeat Israel in war, we do this in stages. We take any and every territory we can of Palestine and establish a sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more. When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel."

- Arafat

Probably just some random Arafat quote that had me thinking he never signed.

As I said.

1. Stop funding Israel.

2. Stop selling Israel weapons.

3. Stop vetoing UN resolutions.

Then there will be real peace.

#20: I guess if you say it multiple times, it must gain more truth somehow?

Ok, then, by that amazing logic:
I will start chanting this in list form:

1. stop making reductionist lists.
2. stop pretending to understand a complex situation.
3. stop oversimplifying things in the guise of making something other than an obvious one-sided "proposal"

then we will have real peace (of mind).

When Arabs and Palestinians acknowledge and accept the right of Israel to exist and live in peace, the violence will end.

Do you know that the Likud platform of 1999 denies the right of Palestine to exist?

Here's the relevant quote: "The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river."

www.juancole.com

"There have been some updates to the platform more recently, reflecting Israel's withdrawal of settlements from Gaza in 2005. But the Likud Party has *never* in its statements of principles, accepted a Palestinian State."

Netanyahu expressed this same principle as recently as a month ago:

"I think the Israeli people understand now what I always say: that there cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan."

Yes, but they aren't shooting rockets.... They are a minority, but keep up the madness and all that can change.

I concur with Netanyahu at this time, which is why I subscribe to the one state solution. You can call it "cleansing", but ....

what is it a cleansing of? Hamas..... the people that hate gays, women and other religions.....

Just like Likud ......

Try to keep peoples quotes in context rcade. He was talking about giving up controlled land as an appeasement to the palistinians. He doesn't want to be surrounded and deal with the terroristic issue from two sides of Israel's borders.

Amid the current conflict, he elaborated, "I think the Israeli people understand now what I always say: that there cannot be a situation, under any agreement, in which we relinquish security control of the territory west of the River Jordan" -- a reference to the Jordan Valley and the West Bank -- as Kerry had urged during a US-led peace effort that collapsed in April.

Yes, but they aren't shooting rockets...

No, they're just stealing land, blockading Gaza, forbidding Palestinians to travel from Gaza to the West Bank, killing hundreds of civilians and making Palestinians live in subjugation and misery for 47 years and counting.

He was talking about giving up controlled land as an appeasement to the palistinians.

He was talking about the West Bank and never letting "security control" of it go to the Palestinians. That translates to No Palestinian State Ever!

So stop it. You created Hamas, then allowed it to grow for decades.

You made your bed in 1948, fluffed the pillows in 1967, and added a nice bed skirt in 1974. You ever gonna lay down, Israel?

Besides stopping the cycle of violence in Israel, how is the world going to stop islamic violence all over? The myth of the moderate muslim has to be dispelled by now... they obviously dont have the balls to put an end to their cousins barbarism. it is no longer just about israel, these vermin are flying jihadi flags all the way to china. Polls reveal these scum buckets (most M.E. muslims) want sharia law as it is written, and a portion still want it strictly by the supplemental hadiths. 40% polled supported death to anyone who leaves the religion. Stuff the 'cite your sources' criticism of my view and percentages, you have google and can find it yourself as well. Stop molly coddling backwards --- cultures that refuse to contribute positively to the future of this earth. You wont even have to worry about global warming if no one stops this islam crap.

Yes, but it will take adults on both sides over the dolts they currently have. They need adults to recognize that 60 years of bloodshed has got neither side anywhere closer to peace and prosperity. They need to realize they are the same people and this is suicide they are engaged in.

It will take the pawns to wake up and stop allowing the leaders to interpret their dreams.
