Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, August 02, 2014

An 11-year-old Florida boy is recovering at Kendall Regional Medical Center after playing the so-called "fire challenge" or "burn challenge," a game where people douse themselves with alcohol, light themselves on fire and post the video on social media or YouTube. Derick Robinson told a news station he was playing with his older brother and three other friends Tuesday at their home in Clewiston. Robinson said his cousin showed him a video on Facebook showing a teen lighting himself on fire. Robinson admitted he wanted to try it. Robinson's mother, Keyesta Pouch, said she was asleep in another room when she heard her son's screams. She said she found him in the shower after having burned himself.

WARNING: Pictures & Video are icky. The lack of intelligence from the 11 year old boy and his mother downright shocking.

The brother and cousin should be brought up on charges. What an incredibly stupid thing for an 11 year old to do, and for them to allow.

I had a friend who used to have an ATV when we were in middle school. One day he decided to try and scare some people by taking some of the gas he had for the ATV, putting some on his jeans and then lighting the gas on fire. He tought only the gas would burn off. But it had soaked into his jeans and when he put a match to it, he very quickly discovered his mistake.

What made it hilarious is that this was in the dead of winter and his first reaction was to jump in a nearby creek. Only the creek was frozen solid.

Somehow he avoided serious burns, I think because he had used very little gas. But he never heard of the end of it. He's an engineer now.

The lack of intelligence from the 11 year old boy and his mother downright shocking.

His mother didn't have anything to do it. She was in another room and heard his screams.

It's amazing how far genuinely dumb and dangerous stunts can spread through YouTube. I thought the cinammon thing was idiotic, but dousing yourself with alcohol and setting it on fire? Criminy.

Just think if we all acted out scenes from the Road Runner. We were a much smarter generation. Hell we lived through Klackers!

Maybe we should let nature take it's course.

What sort of future is in store for a kid who sets himself on fire?

If you saw the video, then why would you do it ? ? ?

If it were my kid, I'd be promising him a beating right after he got out of the hospital, then he would have to pay the bills, then he would have to volunteer at the fire station.

I did this at that age as part of a magic act in the garage for neighborhood kids. Just my hand, though. They loved it.

Buddy of mine did this every Halloween but he used a gel alcohol that wouldn't soak the fabric and wore 2 layers of clothes with the outer layer that would "burn" being easily removable items, so if the clothes actually did catch fire he could take them off before it caught the under layer.

It was pretty sweet but he never talked me into joining him.

This proves my theory that the internet is going to be responsible for bringing down modern society.

50 years ago, young boys would dress like Superman, and try to fly by jumping out of buildings. Many died or were seriously injured. Folks said that Hollywood was responsible for "bringing down society"

And there was no internet to popularize it.

I'm lucky I made it out of my youth alive. Some of the things we did were simply over the top.
Kids will be kids, some die some live to tell about it. There really is nothing you can do about it.

I did a lot of dumb [...] as a kid, with and without fire.

Never did I consider lighting myself on fire a remotely safe idea.

Painting this kid as "victim" is just plain stupid. Maybe the only part of the story dumber than this dumb [...}.

No, they didn't.

Have you ever posted anything that was even remotely true?

C'mon Chairborne, out your "anti gun" sock puppet.
