Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, July 27, 2014

The objective of the Republican Party in North Carolina last year was clear: Unleash the pent-up conservative revolution in a state where the party had not controlled the state legislature and governor's office for more than a century. The newly empowered lawmakers cut taxes, pared unemployment benefits and eliminated business regulations. They allowed concealed guns in bars and restaurants, curtailed access to the voting booth and enacted new rules for abortion clinics. It was the most activist session in memory. But this summer is a different story.

Because we as a Country are too fat too lazy and too complacent. Neither party is exempt. If the United States were to really collapse today Do You REALLY think we have what it takes to right that ship?? We aren't of the same caliber as the greatest generation. We as a Country have been spoilt far too long.

That "greatest generation" is the one that took the benefits of the New Deal, and then turned around and restructured society to benefit only the rich.

The problem today is people don't vote because the plutocrats have successfully spread the message that "the parties are the same so what's the point?"

If we had mandatory voting, the country would swing drastically to the left. We would solve infrastructure, education, military spending, the drug war, toxic food, and profit-driven healthcare.

The other biggest issue is democracy is FOR SALE because of our private election funding system. International corporations who have no loyalty to the USA to or concern for its middle class can buy off the government to work for them instead of the citizens.

We could fix all that with public election funding.

Half right. The voting might very well turn left if it is forced, but won't be in order to solve any national problems. It will all be to increase benefits and freebies to those voters.

Gettinalong, I just don't think that's true. I think most people who lean slightly to the left, like I do, are willing to pay a little more in taxes so that roads are maintained, food is safe, and the environment is protected. Are there poor people who would vote in their best interest? Of course there are. Just like there are rich people who vote in their best interest. People need to take part in their government or eventually someone will take it away from them.

Makes sense...except that I don't think MOST people give a lot of thought to those things. Do you have any idea how many voters don't know which two countries that border the U.S.? Just look at the college students who don't even know the name of the vice president, the amount of national debt, or even what the revolutionary War was or who we fought. They DO, however know about free contraceptives, free cell phones, and who won the american Idol award. If I could, I'd insist upon some sort of simple test in order to qualify to vote.

YEah, we could call it a "literacy test." While we're at it let's make some tax revenue by charging a "poll tax."

Why are you insisting on that? I thought you only favored "Tax the Rich." OR, is it that YOU don't know which two countries border the U.S. yourself?

If you don't like how rightwing NC became last year, either don't live in NC or organize politically.

Didn't read the article

"a tide of liberal outrage in the state, including the protest movement known as Moral Mondays, which has seen hundreds of activists arrested at the Capitol in civil disobedience actions."

There have been near non-stop protests not just the moral Monday ones, lots of arrests so many in fact judges started complaining and I believe that there may be a free speech lawsuit about the way the protesters were bared from legislative sessions. Not sure about the last it was talked about but not sure if anyone pressed it.

Tao, you are correct, I didn't read the article. Still, the point remains. If you don't like what's going on in NC either move or get politcally active.

#11 | Posted by moder8 at 2014-07-27 04:38 PM | Reply | Flag:

True but the thing is a large hunk of NC has gotten politically active hence the worry republicans are having right now. If NC had been complacent there would be no moderate shift in the party.

Jest, not all poor people vote for their own self interests. Just look at the poorest states in the union, SC, MS, LA. All solidly red states, full of toothless hillbillies collecting welfare, Social Security, Medicaid, but they hate Democrats, especially the black guy in the White House. If those idiots voted for their self interest all those states would be solidly blue! So the moral of the story is that poor Republicans are idiots, who would rather see the Koch brothers get another tax break than see their family get healthcare.

North Carolina is the home of NASCAR. What happens in a NASCAR race when one turns right? An intense meeting with a wall, other drivers, or both. Righties think that by turning right they can get someplace, without slamming into a wall, upending the interests of other drivers and NOT successfully finishing the race. Some are so bent on their way of thinking that they cannot distinguish a wall from a clear path...
