Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

After protesters shouting "Go home" turned back busloads of immigrant mothers and children in Murrieta, Calif., a furious Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, the Roman Catholic archbishop of New York, sat down at his notepad and drafted a blog post detailing his shame at the episode, writing, "It was un-American; it was unbiblical; it was inhumane." When the governor of Iowa, Terry E. Branstad, said he did not want the migrants in his state, declaring, "We can't accept every child in the world who has problems," clergy members in Des Moines held a prayer vigil at a United Methodist Church to demonstrate their desire to make room for the refugees.

The United States' response to the arrival of tens of thousands of migrant children, many of them fleeing violence and exploitation in Central America, has been symbolized by an angry pushback from citizens and local officials who have channeled their outrage over illegal immigration into opposition to proposed shelter sites. But around the nation, an array of religious leaders are trying to mobilize support for the children, saying the nation can and should welcome them.

Best news of the day. The headline should read "Phony, hypocritical 'Christians' found out, shamed before the World".

All those bigots screaming 'go home' yet showing their faces at church on Sunday should get a glimpse of Matthew Ch. 25. They will then see themselves for what they are...

I like the idea that the US is opening refugee centers in the countries of origin where claims for refugee status can be investigated "before" the kids show up at the US border. Once these refugee centers are open, any child trying to illegally enter the US can be turned around "immediately" and returned to the refugee center(s) in their home country.

I love how BOTH sides use religion to their advantage when it "suits" their own agenda.

I actually agree with the bishops - let the PRIVATE non-profit religious organizations deal with social issues such as this - in the HOME countries. 10 billion to Catholic Charities for help in central and south America would do a hell of a lot more good than giving it to our corrupt or their corrupt governments.

Pope Benedict never should of made this man as a Cardinal,
Generally this man is a ass.
BUT in this case he is right and I give him credit on this.
Those people who were shouting at the bus load of Mothers and Children are a disgrace

Thank you Cardinal Dolan for getting it right this time.

I agree with this 100% but, I am concerned, if the info heard on NPR is correct, that 80% of these "children", are males over 14 yoa and a large percentage have gang tattoos. I know this contridicts what we see on TV that seems to show nothing but small children clinging to their 15 yoa mothers.

They aren't orphaned and abandoned. Mexican soccer moms drive their SUVs up to the border with a carload of kids and tell the kids to get out and climb the fence.

Their feelings of the protesters are "hate" and "anger."
The target of those feelings is "Central American juveniles."

It's hard not to join with people like this.

Fact is these aren't adult's who've hopped a border to compete with Americans for jobs.

These are (usually) child refugees who've traveled across over 4,000 miles of desert (Mexico) to reach our land.

Surely they have good reason to flee i.e. fear of death.

How is it ridiculous? Remember, most of the 'children' coming across illegally have no guardian and/or are running from violence.

If you are not willing to take in these kids why do you expect someone else to do it? Or would you rather see the "government" do it by creating state run orphanages.

On NPR the reported that a number of these kids will be shipped to Florida and put into group homes. I simply can't wait for the greedy, Republican future group home owners to start fighting over the kids. Filling up group home beds can be very profitable, and I actually know a thing or two about the group home business. The next "private prison" business will be the new group home business for illegal aliens waiting for deportation. They will live there until they are 18 and then allowed to leave and go live on their own. Once again we will have the business oriented Republicans in opposition to the Tea Party anti-immigration Republicans. They have such disparity of views that sooner or later that Party has to split.

Not really. I assume people who yell at a bus are full of hate for what's on the bus. It's a safe assumption.

This guy says it better. "Yelling at the wrong bus." www.roanoke.com
"You're still left with the reality that a bunch of adults -- one a candidate for Congress -- thought it a good idea to interdict a bunch of children who had just survived a long and terrifying journey from Central America, arrived alone in a strange land and been taken into custody -- and yell at them to go back "to Mexico." In English."

This is not about hate, it's about self preservation.

Thanks to 50 years of a USA being led by greedy corrupt bunch of politicians addicted to money from America'second special interests, our nation for many is no longer the prosperous nation it once was. Many see these children and this movement as being a continuation of this same movement to gain political advantage at the expense of Americans and they've had enough. This isn't about hate, it is about protecting what remains of our way of life for our children.

The religious institutions, politicians, US Chamber of Commerce and ethnic centrists have always supported opening our nation's doors because it serves their interests. It doesn't serve most who will pay more taxes and see their once secure benefits like Social Security whittled away, all while their jobs are much less secure.

You are deflecting from the claim that people who do not want these kids dropped into their communities are full of hate. Maybe they are scared and worried about their future and feel no support from law enforcement or the politicians that orchestrated this political event just in time for the Nov elections.

People have been waiting in line for years to enter this country legally. Who sent the message to these people that they could come and be granted amnesty? And why was that message sent? Was it sent to those in Africa or Asia?
