Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The attorneys for Arizona death row inmate Joseph Wood filed an emergency stay after the state's execution attempt Wednesday afternoon left him "gasping and snorting for more than an hour," according to their motion read. "He is still alive. This execution has violated Wood's Eighth Amendment right to be executed in the absence of cruel and unusual punishment. We respectfully request that this Court stop the execution and require that the Department of Corrections use the lifesaving provisions required in its protocol." Earlier this year, Oklahoma put executions on hold after the drugs used on Clayton Lockett took 43 minutes to kill him, Oklahoma officials said.

The death penalty the ultimate in hypocrisy. The State is killing a killer on your behalf which when all is said and done makes everyone no better than the killer they condemned to death.

#9 The only part about that I would like to change is me having to wait for the State to act on my behalf.

The gas chamber is cruel. Florida managed to set a man hair on fire instead of killing him by electrocution. There is no reason that putting someone to sleep with an injection should not be painless and effective. Unskilled junkies manage it every day.

Hogwash, the death penalty is to prevent honor killings...

It makes us incredibly much better than revenge, which would happen if the victims didn't feel there was justice.

Many educated folks, in EVERY country, around the world, think that the war criminals Bush, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh and their lying neo-con friends deserve the same punishment ...just my honest opinion

The death penalty came about because of the liberals penchant for releasing criminals back into society to do their nasty deeds all over again.

"Why does the Lord matter?"

My bad. I didn't realize that Jesus supported cruel and unusual punishments.

Or perhaps you are right. What Jesus thinks doesn't matter when it comes to suffering or things like how the State kills its own people. He did say give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar after all.

What Jesus thinks apparently only matters when it comes to sexual relations and birth control.

Next!!!!

If they need more lethal injection poison, I'll be happy to go to the corner store and buy some Drano for em.

If they had sense they'd use a rope. Eighth Amendment suitable by the standards that mean anything (the standards when it was last amended, which in this case is the day it was adopted). A rope could even be seem as 'green' for folks that care.

"He is still alive. This execution has violated Wood's Eighth Amendment right to be executed in the absence of cruel and unusual punishment.

I have issues with the death penalty but I find this story a little too overly-dramatic. This quote could be said anytime within the first few minutes of a text book lethal injection and be true. Also, just because a body reacts doesn't mean the person is conscious or in pain. I work with mice for some of my research projects and it's not too uncommon for a mouse out cold on sedatives to exhibit "gasping" behaviors after they're euthanized.

I have wonder if these lawyer types being lawyer types have actually made this more inevitable by complicating what's a pretty simple issue.

Obama etc) also received and suffered a similar DEATH Sentence!

Silly lefties....

We nasty conservatives would be overjoyed to grant such scum quick, fast, cheap, low pain executions. BUT YOU MAKE THAT IMPOSSIBLE. So we take whatever type of execution we can. We're more than willing to shoot for 'painless' ON THE CONDITION that it not just be painless, but also be fatal. If we are FORCED BY YOU to choose between 'fatal' and 'painless', we'll choose 'fatal' every time, and CORRECTLY blame you for causing the problem.

Heroin seems to do the trick pretty well, and since it's flooding the country now i don't see why they're fooling around with this substitute drug that ain't working efficiently =+= i mean, if it takes the executionee a little while to die, since we insist on killing certain poor people, at least they won't be in pain.

At his trial, Gérard (assassin of William the Silent 1584) was sentenced to be brutally – even by the standards of that time – killed. The magistrates decreed that the right hand of Gérard should be burned off with a red-hot iron, that his flesh should be torn from his bones with pincers in six different places, that he should be quartered and disemboweled alive, his heart torn from his bosom and flung in his face, and that, finally, his head should be taken off.[1]

Gérard's torture was also very brutal. On the first night of his imprisonment Gérard was hung on a pole and lashed with a whip. After that his wounds were smeared with honey and a goat was brought to lick the honey off his skin with his rough tongue. The goat however refused to touch the body of the sentenced. After this and other tortures he was left to pass the night with his hands and feet bound together, like a ball, so sleep would be difficult. During the following three days, he was repeatedly mocked and hung on a pole with his hands tied behind his back. Then a weight of 300 metric pounds (150 kg) was attached to each of his big toes for half an hour. After this half hour Gérard was fitted with shoes made of well-oiled, uncured dog skin; the shoes were two fingers shorter than his feet. In this state he was put before a fire. When the shoes warmed up, they contracted, crushing the feet inside them to stumps. When the shoes were removed, his half-broiled skin was torn off. After his feet were damaged, his armpits were branded. After that he was dressed in a shirt soaked in alcohol. Then burning bacon fat was poured over him and sharp nails were stuck between the flesh and the nails of his hands and feet. Gérard is said to have remained calm during his torture. On 14 July 1584, Gérard was executed.

When the crime is blatant murder and death, and involves outrageous harm against average Americans, and the perp was found guilty beyond ALL possibilities, I'm not nearly as concerned about the technicalities of the execution, unless it is blatant torture.

Otherwise I would not support the death penalty. It needs to be the exception and not the rule.
