Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

During a CNN interview on Sunday, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed worldwide sympathy for the hundreds of Palestinian civilians killed in Gaza bombing by saying, "All civilian casualties are unintended by us, but intended by Hamas. They want to pile up as many civilian dead as they can ... it's gruesome," Netanyahu said. "They use telegenically dead Palestinians for their cause."

The never-subtle liberal journalist Glenn Greenwald compared Netanyahu's remark to one by Joseph Goebbels in a 1941 essay.

His explanation for the concerns of the world over the military campaign is that more journalists are in Gaza and social media is letting the residents reach the world. He writes, "American journalism is frequently criticized with great justification, but there are a number of American journalists in Gaza, along with non-western ones, in order to tell the world about what is happening there. That reporting is incredibly brave and difficult, and those who are doing it merit the highest respect. Their work, along with the prevalence of social media and internet technology that allows Gazans themselves to document what is happening, has changed the way Israeli aggression is seen and understood this time around."

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Is there a counter argument? Other than stop the killing.

Of course Yahu wants to limit loss of life, but he agreed to a ceasefire. That only got more rockets sent over the border.

"We didn't seek this escalation," he said. "Hamas forced it on us. They started rocketing our cities, steadily increasing the fire. I called for de-escalation; they refused. I accepted an Egyptian ceasefire proposal, backed up by the Arab League and the UN; they refused. I accepted a humanitarian lull, proposed by the United Nations; they refused. We will stop our operations when we can bring back quiet to our people."

1800 rockets in two weeks.....

Anything to counter RCade?

The argument is they didn't kill anyone.....

My counter is, so stray bullets in your neighborhood is acceptable? Why do we outlaw shooting up in the air?

i sense Israel-Gaza fatigue creeping in. Israel's been killing people whose land they want (God told them to take) for millennia.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Then you agree with a course of action and rhetoric that put Israel's future at risk. Israel is killing hundreds of innocent civilians. Complaining that people are sympathetic about these deaths because the victims are "telegenic" shows an appalling lack of humanity on Netanyahu's part. It's like he doesn't see the dead children as children any more.

Of course Israel has a right to respond in self defense when rockets are being fired at it. But the Iron Dome put Israel's casualties from those rockets in single digits. The world can see this.

Israel's hardliners and Palestine's hardliners are taking actions that strengthen each other.

That should tell you where the wrong party is here, while Israel puts money into self-defense, Hamas is digging tunnels with cement intended for schools.

Again shooting guns in the air doesn't kill that many people.... is it tolerated?

Trust me, there is a great debate within Israel, but many many more people continue to see Hamas as causing most of this pain.

You have not countered Yahoos statements one iota.

Every time Israel pursued peace it was thwarted.

Hamas does not want peace, it wants to run up the body count..... it doesn't care about the civilians it indirectly kills.

When has Israel never been at risk? This is why it puts so much emphasis on its military, it lives in a hostile environment. One you can't even comprehend until you go over there.

There are no public garbage cans, why is that?

Do you even know what "telegenic" means?

It means to look good on television. Netanyahu is complaining that dead Palestinian children look good on television. I guess he'd prefer the world to think that all the people Israel was killing were swarthy evil adult Hamas terrorists with rocket launchers in their dead hands. But reality isn't letting him tell that story, now is it?

"If Netanyahu is so bothered by how dead Palestinians look on television then he should stop killing so many of them." -- Benjamin Wallace-Wells, New York magazine

You keep talking about Hamas, but at least 70% of the casualties in Gaza are ordinary civilians. Do you really think that Netanyahu's strategy will kill more militants enemies of Israel than it creates?

Before you answer, keep in mind that more than half of Gaza's population is under the age of 18 and youth unemployment there is 57%. Are those children cowering in fear from Israeli bombs more or less likely to embrace radicalism?

I've seen some truly shocking scenes this morning," tweeted the Guardian's man in Gaza, Peter Beaumont, on Saturday. "A man putting the remains of his two year old son into a garbage bag."

It is a shame that some would use carefully scripted talking point to justify the killing of unarmed women and children.

cognitive dissonance.. when belief trumps facts.

what she thinks no longer matters.. only what she believes.

it takes a sledgehammer of information and a overdose or reality to be cured of cognitive dissonance.

The similarities between what we did to the Indians, Netanyahu does to the Palestinians and Hitler did to the Jews is striking. The most publicized human tragedy, Hitler's extermination of the Jews, has been turned on its head as those Jews slaughter the Palestinians. What does it say about humanity and its leadership?

I think its gotten to the point where people have forgotten that Israel has had them under military blockade and occupation for the past couple decades while continuously shrinking their share of liveable land. Israel's counter to this? Allow some of them to live as almost slave labor in Israel.

Exactly. Israel takes steps that they know will provoke violence. But they won't just finish the Palestinians off either. So they just stay in this perpetual state of war. And we pay for it. Whatever mental defect exists in their national psyche shouldn't be our problem. We should have cut them off decades ago.

#23 | Posted by Sully at 2014-07-22 10:03 AM | Reply | Flag: | Newsworthy 2

There isn't much the U.S. can do or should do about this war between Israel and the Palestinians but we could and should stop giving either side a dime. We shouldn't be paying for the weapons they are using to kill each other.

#24 | Posted by danni at 2014-07-22 10:07 AM | Reply | Flag:

There would be no dead children if Hamas didn't want it that way. They have the option to not attack, and even pay attention the leaflets outlining exactly where and when the strikes will come.

But Hamas wants to have something to point at for sympathy.

Hell, the Palestinians had the opportunity to participate in the government at its creation so many years ago. If that hasn't tried to get their friends to gang up on the fledgling nation with the support if the world, their would be nothing but peace and prosperity in that region.

Instead, the Palestinians and their friends got their dicks smacked soundly by the Israelis, and the rest of their whiny, pouty, history is in the books.

"The similarities between what we did to the Indians,..."

Study some history. When Israel was declared a nation the Muslims urged their people to evacuate in order to form a force against them. Hence we have "Palestine." They were NOT forced out like the Indians were and some DID stay. Those Arab Muslims live in Israel and comprise about 20% of the population. Instead of drinking all the NBC, MSNBC, HuffPo kool-aid you might check more sources before becoming a "progressive" sycophant.

I wonder why they've blockaded the "Palestinians." Maybe suicide bombings, the Intifadas, terrorists and all that had a little to do with it.

"There would be no dead children if Hamas didn't want it that way."

For sure! They've even been sending civilians leaving the combat centers back into their homes. They need all the bodies they can scrape up. Maybe they'll suspend some honor killings of their daughters and send them to areas being attacked.

"Hell, the Palestinians had the opportunity to participate in the government at its creation so many years ago. If that hasn't tried to get their friends to gang up on the fledgling nation with the support if the world, their would be nothing but peace and prosperity in that region."

You're attempting to confuse them with facts. Their "progressive" educations in government schools have permanently wired their brains to all that PC and BS propaganda that they have no idea what REALLY happened back in that time nor what really goes on today.

interesting...I've been doing some reading on the subject and I found a muslim quote that was quite interesting and as far as I and millions of people who actually support Isreal.....I read this and my support went up even more....HAMAS is taking care of the "saturday people" and the killers in iraq are working on the 'sunday people'....

..THE following is Arabic for JUST what they have planned in the middle east.......أولاً الناس يوم السبت، يوم الأحد ثم الناس AND it means....Today the Saturday people, THEN the Sunday people......

fine but of course you know the name "palestinians' is a made up word...but 'regardless....your plan is okay but it would mean the end of Isreal and the murder of millions of jews that live there. Surely you don't believe that their enemies would just leave them alone?

What the Israeli's need, or should have, is a counter mortar radar system.

For every rocket launched send an artillery shell back to it's launch position.

If the area is dug with tunnels then use ground penetrating shells.

The only problem I see with using counter fire is the number of children killed when they are sat around a launch site to observe the rockets going off to kill the Jews.

Allah Akbar
