Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, July 21, 2014

The Drudge Retort has been operating as a social news site since 2004, but during the decade there has never been an attempt to determine who's using this site and what you come here for, aside from two user account questions about party affiliation and ideology that are compiled on the stats page. I'm going to put together a 10- to 15-question survey and use it to roll out some new features and site changes over the next several months. You can help: Tell me what questions you'd like the survey to ask.

Questions can be about the user -- age group, education level and so on -- and about what users are looking for when they come here. They can also be about how the site is run, what subjects ought to be on the front page and what subjects ought to be ignored.

You could ask what type non-binding flags for comments would you like to see? example:

stupid flag
idiot flag
dummy flag
smart flag
makes sense flag
superior thought flag

That subject will definitely come up, though I don't have the freedom to change site moderation as much as I do other things.

How to handle climate denial links will definitely be a question.

Another question would be:

What HTML tags would you use if you could?

#5 | Posted by boaz at 2014-07-21 11:54 AM | Reply | Flag:

The issue you might run into is people not answering questions honestly.

Just look at Chairborne's user page as an example.

#6 | Posted by JeffJ at 2014-07-21 11:55 AM | Reply | Flag:

no....moderation is something they'll just have to experience once they're here. don't let the cat out of the bag on that one.

my suggestion is to be very clear on the party affiliation/ideology questions as most folks are very suspicious of that question and how they will be treated as a result of their answer.

But it would be helpful to know what site changes and new features you're going to introduce.

It's sort of like asking GOD why he is he constrained by human free will.

I honestly can't think of any questions that you could ask that I think would be helpful.

How to handle climate denial links will definitely be a question.

Does an article that points out the earth hasn't warmed in almost 2 decades count as 'climate denial'?

I don't think there's much more to be asked on site moderation. Use the nooner(unmoderated) as a carrot to get people to sign up and see the unbridled fury of your posters. If they don't like it, they should be able to not see the nooner with a username...

Here are a couple of more recent changes you've made that I think have been a net positive for your site:

Kill files (although I have never plonked anybody, nor have I ever flagged a post as abusive)

The un-moderated nooner is excellent.

I would love to have a 21-day running total in the user profiles for number of flags given out by an individual poster:

Newsworthy - 7
Funny - 4
Abusive - 0
Etc

Although, in doing do you'd probably end up with flame wars as those who flag abusive would be mocked.

Instead, perhaps you could create a 21-day 'flagged' total. How many of each flag an individual poster has received. That would be pretty interesting.

How about an 'off-topic' flag for a poster who hijacks a thread with an unrelated topic.

Ok RCADE, Seriously,

One question should be:

Would you pay to access premium content?

Maybe to access a part of the site without your toe-nail ads or maybe even a super premium site without moderation only accessible to paying members...

Could you comment on this suggestion RCADE, because I am seriously interested on your thoughts..

That's alright. I just would prefer we talk about survey questions here, since it could easily become a climate change debate from people who are fired up about their view being excluded.

Years ago this site had more experimentation. I had to redesign it twice on new software, and that made changes necessary. Remember when anybody could claim to be anybody in a comment?

I'm going to try to set aside my ego -- I have a very strong impression of what this site should be -- and be receptive to doing things in new ways.

Some. But questions will help answer this question: If you were put in charge of a 23,000-member news and politics site that was getting 924,000 visits a month, what would you do with it?

#38 | Posted by rcade at 2014-07-21 12:23 PM | Reply | Flag:

Maybe you should emphasize that you don't moderate based upon political opinion.

Some political sites discriminate based upon ideology.

You have always welcomed people of all political stripes to post here without impunity. It's what initially attracted me to this site.

It's also why I think you are making a mistake with your heavy-handedness toward AGW skepticism. Let the arguments win on merit instead of just shutting down debate.

One of the thing I wonder about those numbers is the member number and the visits number compared to the actual poster number, whatever that is, which seems to be a lot lower. Lots of new sign-ups, few new posters.

Are we THAT obnoxious that they would rather lurk than post?

Also, what started out as "Red Meat for Yellow Dogs", by the Stat page, only has a few of those puppies left around.

Independent: 76 (32.34%)
None: 60 (25.53%)
Democrat: 30 (12.77%)
Other: 26 (11.06%)
Republican: 25 (10.64%)
Libertarian: 11 (4.68%)
Green: 7 (2.98%)

Perhaps all the Independent/nones, by far the majority, reflect the growing public view. Or perhaps they reflect the long-time recalcitrance of BB users.

Or just lurkers?

The Retort doesn't have to rely on direct ad sales, though we do sell them through BlogAds. Most ads come from huge advertiser networks where the client buys across a large range of websites.

Direct ads sales generally come from political causes and candidates (mostly liberal), computer hardware and services, T-shirts and novelists.

I talk about it sometimes, but dark humor is a tough place to make money.

SportsFilter is a low traffic place these days where regulars hang out, play fantasy sports and occasionally jibber jabber about something in the sports world. I'm adding more fantasy stuff there to see if we can attract more newbies.

Workbench is just a personal blog that I let go dormant a lot of the time. I write there for fun and to occasionally pimp something I'm working on.

a. Where do you reside (State or Country)
b. Stance on social issues (Conservative/Moderate/
Liberal)?
c. Stance on fiscal issues (Conservative/Moderate/
Liberal)?
d. Male/Female/Alphabet Soup
e. Ethnicity/Marital Status/Income/etc...

2. Do you use the RSS Feed or subscribe to Drudge.com via email?
3. Do you enjoy having both a front and back page or would you prefer a single page?
4. Do you support having one or more unmoderated threads?
5. Do you enjoy the baby crap yellow background or would you change it?
6. If you could add one item to the FLAG dropdown menu, what would it be? (top 5 answers get added)
7. Using the information provided in Question #1, would you support an expanded Stats page?
8. Describe one change you would make to the DR [free text]

Why do you hate America?

Why do you lie?

Do you ever leave your mom's basement?

Why do you think everyone else should give you free stuff?

Well, maybe I'm a rah-tard. My NW flag doesn't appear to have stuck.

I know that in the past when I've flagged they've stuck.

Perhaps Rcade intentionally deactivated the flags just to mess with us.

I flag twice when I flag to make sure it sticks. I need to rewrite the code to change the widget to "Flag Received" when it has been saved. But that's Javascript magic and it's difficult to get right on all browsers and devices.

Remove the "newsworthy" flag, and put "Agree" or "Disagree".....

The ability to reply to a post, and on my user page, see people that have replied, so I can reply in kind. But thats mostly because of my limited time that I can use the DR.

What has been interesting is how people align for different topics. Typically we think Conservative vs Liberals, but there are many topics where we change alliances in PoV.

It would be interesting if you could ask questions (don't know what they might be) but see how you align near too or far from fellow posters.

This could be crowdsourced too, for instance through the flags the user gets, relative to the flags the poster of the thread uses. For instance "pro-xxxx", users could flag the users as "anti-xxxx"... ??

I like sports, but I would like to expand it, to more international sports, like cycling, F1, Canadian Football...... maybe a small sports section on the front page.

FWIW

I agree. Even if you could have another chance to "preview" your post again after you edit the first preview.

As it is, your first preview edit goes straight to "publish", so if you screw up the edit you're hooped.

On topic, a potential survey question might ask about devices used to view the DR... PC, tablet, phone, etc. Test the waters for a mobile app?

"Do you work for a political party"

I don't know if all political parties have the same rules, but since my efforts are geared toward getting people registered with the proper documentation, etc., for which I'm partially reimbursed by the Democratic Party, I am precluded from talking about it on a public forum.

So if that question appears I'd have to leave it blank or not participate.

Both political parties and several corporations and think tanks have people who serf the net and subscribe to web sites just like this to spread talking points and propaganda and to persuade people in certain ways.
of course if you ask them to admit this with any questionnaire they would so know so my there really is no point to adding it except as a excuse to kick them off if they are found out as a sock puppet for one of these groups

Imo, an obituaries and birthdays column would be nice. Maybe include important holidays around the planet, or information about our representatives.

As for personal questions, maybe country of origin - not to be disclosed other than on a statistical chart without handle association.

A veteran status page would be cool too - a few people compiled their own.

Instead of a mac vs. pc, smartphone vs. clam shell, cat vs. dog - maybe just WPM?

Now I'll read the thread contents to see who I've bitten.

I would suggest transparency is most important and first. Give us the IP addresses of posters by geographic location and by institution. My posts come un-masked, unfiltered even though they may sometimes be provocative or PC incorrect. I have no problem with Americans of average means and average politics giving candid opinions of average citizens.

Many may have a major problem of other countries, institutions such as corporations, government at all levels, and academic institutions feeding us their propaganda.

Solution: Give us institutional and geographic IP addresses of users even if not in specifics.

Uh, not to sound like a meanie but the security risks involved would no longer be on the head of Rcade. Having one thousand "moderators" seems quite unreasonable, and as much as I find some of the characters obscene Rcade hasn't been unfair IMO (other than to my "poetry").
