Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In 1983, Korean Airlines Flight 007 was shot down by the Soviet Union. President Ronald Reagan reacted quickly by ending his vacation and returning to Washington.

Reagan addressed the nation, "This was the Soviet Union against the world and the moral precepts which guide human relations among people everywhere."

62 Americans died, including one congressman, died on Flight 007. Reagan added, "It was an act of barbarism born of a society which wantonly disregards individual rights and human life, and seeks constantly to expand and dominate other nations."

On Thursday night's edition of the Kelly File, digital media editor Chris Stirewalt spoke of the importance of Reagan's tone.

"They turned the tide on the discussion of the Cold War and on the discussion of Reagan's plans by making clear what kind of conduct that was," Stirewalt told host Megyn Kelly.

On Heels Of Tragic Plane Crash, Fox Rewrites Reagan's Legacy In Effort To Jab Obama

In fact, Reagan initially sent aides to respond to the attack on the airliner, waiting four days before delivering the speech condemning the Soviet Union that is now being lauded by many pundits at Fox News.

Fox's Wallace pushed back against his network peers, noting that "sometimes the best thing presidents can do is nothing, to continue on." He continued, noting that Reagan had to be persuaded to leave his ranch and return to Washington for a speech that came four days after the attack (emphasis added):

WALLACE: I know there's like an immediate reaction, that you want to say he should have run back to Washington and gone back to the Situation Room. I know that a lot of folks at Fox here are saying that. As somebody who covered the White House and saw for six years Ronald Reagan in various situations, sometimes the best thing presidents can do is nothing, to continue on. If he had gone back to Washington and gone to the situation room -- first of all, there's not much he can do, we're not in control of the situation. And it would have dialed it up.

[...]

WALLACE: I was covering Ronald Reagan at that time. He was in Santa Barbara at his ranch when that happened, and quite frankly he didn't want to leave. And his advisers realized how terrible this looked, and eventually persuaded him he had to fly back to Washington and had to give this speech to the nation, but it did take him four days.

The Wallace quotes are directly from Fox News btw if you don't think Media Matters is telling the truth. I watched many of the contemporaneous news reports from 1983, including Chris Wallace's on-site hits last night on tv. Responsible journalists were comparing 1983 with yesterday and most importantly how the initial reporting organically evolved as more facts were thrown into the pot. The KAL flight originated from the US, MH17 didn't.

Reagan also took a dig that "moral nations" don't shoot down other nations commercial airplanes, swiping hard at the USSR. Then his words came back to haunt him when we shot down the Iranian airliner in 1988. Oops.

Tony,

The differences between the 007, and 655 events are stark.

The Vincennes thought they might be under attack, mis read its flight profile, tried to communicate couldn't for whatever reason, and fired two missiles.

The 007, the Russians ordered to shoot it down even in neutral waters, without caring to identify the aircraft.

General Kornukov (to Military District Headquarters-Gen. Kamensky): (5:47) "...simply destroy [it] even if it is over neutral waters? Are the orders to destroy it over neutral waters? Oh, well."
Kamensky: We must find out, maybe it is some civilian craft or God knows who."

Kornukov: "What civilian? [It] has flown over Kamchatka! It [came] from the ocean without identification. I am giving the order to attack if it crosses the State border."

While the events are the same, the reason or moral reasons, they occurred were much different, what the Russians did was "premeditated", IMO.

Also I wouldn't put "time" into any equation of comparison, perhaps the thread article did, the Internet, and survalellence technology is vastly superior to yester year.

You realize Reagan was a well trained veteran actor, right?

Remember the long, long ago time, like back in 2007, when "principled conservatives" used 9/11 as an excuse for everything!

They would chortle in unison:
"Pre 9/11" sqwak
"The World Changed on 9/11" sqwak
Then finish of with the standard: "Fifty Years to Judge" for good measure in every attempt to excuse the massive growth of domestic surveillance, expansion of executive powers, and the proliferation of international terrorists using 2 trillion US tax dollars we didn't have.

Look at your whiney hiney now!

HAR~HAR~

I leave you to your weekend of misery.

Reagan was responsible for deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps.

Unforgivable.

We will never forget.

By and large America has been hollywoodized and that's the main reason why Conservatives idolize Reagan like they do. They look back at the many movies that he was in and they long wistfully for that image he portrayed on film. That's the image they carried with them when he became President. They were worshiping the actor not how he was in reality. They are worshiping the fantasy.

Basically Andrea, it is the same excuse except Iranian plane actually was on route and on time.

By Dubya, a few DECADES later (longest TADA in history)and only to let American companies be able to bid on oil reconstruction contracts.

That flight was planned by Iran. Its flight profile led the Vincennes to think they were being attacked and they acted accordingly.

The demented sack of cancervative cowardice responded to the deaths of 189 Americans in the Lockerbie bombing by filling his Depends.

That hacks routinely leverage tragedies like this to make cheap, nonsensical partisan attacks without being called out for their ghoulishness is an indicator of how low our society as a whole has sunk.
