Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, July 18, 2014

A 400-pound asthmatic Staten Island dad died Thursday after a New York City cop put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against the sidewalk. The New York Daily News obtained video of the incident, which shows Staten Island man Eric Garner, 43, begging officers to let him breathe as he lies on the ground helpless. Within moments Garner, a married father of six children with two grandchildren, ceased struggling and appeared to become unconscious as police called paramedics to the scene. "It's the most inhumane, insensitive display of disregard for the citizens you're supposed to protect that I've seen in a long time," said the Rev. Al Sharpton.

In the video, Garner denied the allegations and asked a plainclothes officer why he was stopped. "Every time you see me you want to mess with me," Garner told cops in the video. "I'm tired of it. It stops today!"

When Garner refused to put his hands behind his back, and asked one officer not to touch him, two others moved in to make the arrest. Video shows at least one officer putting Garner in a chokehold and slamming him on the ground. Garner can be heard screaming "I can't breathe, I can't breathe!" before going quiet.

Multiple witnesses to the death expressed anger at the NYPD. "They jumped him and they were choking him. He was foaming at the mouth," 22-year-old Ramsey Orta, who took the video, told The Daily News. "And that's it, he was done. The cops were saying, ‘No, he's OK, he's OK.' He wasn't OK." Another witness said Garner was "absolutely not selling cigarettes," Staten Island Live reported.

With the many threads about law enforcement and their interactions with criminals and the community at large, there is absolutely no justification for actions such as these. One minute this man was alive and the next he was dead because he refused to consider himself a criminal as did the NYPD officers in his midst.

He suffered a cardiac arrest......(no pun intended)

It is an unfortunate event, but don't most people being arrested refuse to consider themselves a criminal?

The question is why use a banned chokehold? Also why were there so many officers in the vicinity? What is their background with this guy? Had he sold cigs before?

What is "D.D."? on the officers back?

Nothing is more dangerous than being black in New York City. The NYPD do not serve and protect anybody except Wall Street. Naturally Wall Street bribes them with millions. They are not public servants.

a bunch of cops is no court of law, not in America. got it?

just hand the guy a summons.

Didn't you know. In America, selling illegal cigs is a capital crime, where the police can decide to execute without a trial.

i just dont understand why some of these intercity gangs dont show a little
initiative and set a few of these cops straight. they need to make an example
of a few dozen of these tough guys

Diablo is quite enthralled with his authority figures.

Except the new Pope, whom he ignores.

You know, the new 'love thy neighbor' Pope.

The new Pope who says that Catholics need to get past their abortion and gay obsessions.

The new Pope who rails against Income inequality.

Yeah, that one.

I've used that choke a number of times. Seems a lot more likely the intensity of the altercation itself caused the heart attack, not the relatively brief choke hold.
