Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has convened with nonprofit groups to shelter undocumented immigrant children in L.A. while they await court hearings on whether they can remain in the United States. "Before you get partisan, before you tell me where you are on immigration, these are children. As a father, who are we as Americans if we do not step forward first?" Garcetti asked, noting, "I see this as not just a moral issue but as a practical one." Homeless activist Ted Hayes, who has lived in L.A. for three decades, opposes the idea, insisting there are American kids on city streets who need help first. "It's kind of a slap in the face to U.S. citizens," Hayes said. "It's embarrassing. It's hurtful. Because it's like a father saying that he loves children outside of the family more than he loves his own."

Undocumenteds first prioirity, citizens second. I recall in the 90's the ruckus made about the homeless plight. But today, its the plight of he undocumented ie "illegal" immigrant children getting the benefits a citizen should be getting.

"Everything which might cause doubt about the wisdom of the government or create discontent will be kept from the people. The basis of unfavorable comparisons with elsewhere, the knowledge of possible alternatives to the course actually taken, information which might suggest failure on the part of the government to live up to its promises or to take advantage of opportunities to improve conditions--all will be suppressed. There is consequently no field where the systematic control of information will not be practiced and uniformity of views not enforced." ― Friedrich Hayek, The Road to Serfdom

You're on Ted Hayes side now? Really? What's next, Danny Bakewell?

It isn't an either/or situation. The U.S. has many relief programs aimed at the homeless, in and out of government, and homeless children are provided free breakfast and lunch programs at schools and other support.

Here, all Garcetti is doing is arranging shelter for these detained children, and he isn't spending city money -- the funds are from non-profits that want to help.

This immigration issue has us circling the drain even faster. We can't take care of our own, but send us your dregs of society and we will pay for them as well..

Exactly how many more poor and uneducated people can this country handle? When is enough, enough? If we can't (and don't want to be) be the world police anymore, why should we be the world babysitter/dregs dump?

Money and opportunity are attractive. The U.S. has a lot of both compared to countries like Mexico and Guatemala. Historically, the U.S. has had periods of labor demand that necessitated the invitation to the same groups of people who cross the border today. The only difference is the lack of labor necessity. With high unemployment here in the states comes a disinterest in allowing foreigners in who are looking to fill nonexistent labor gaps.

We have nobody else to blame but ourselves for creating this situation. Should there be a labor shortage in the future, we will once again invite people in to fill the gaps. Problem is the invitation is perceived to be entirely open all the time. That too is a problem of our own creation.

The current events are consequences of American labor policy and economic success. Can't blame anyone for that other than ourselves, IMO.

If I was one of those kids, I'd be trying to get in this country by any means necessary. If the INS got me and sent me back, I'd get off the bus or plane and immediately head north. Screw poverty.

Your huddled masses, yearning to breath free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.*"

"I wonder how many the America life boat can hold."

Let's consider the fact that most of us who are here came from impoverished families, who didn't speak the language, etc. American can handle the influx of brave young people willing to risk everything to get here, often alone. They will make America a stronger place.

No matter what America does we're going to be blamed for every outcome but a good one.

I think we are playing a percentage game here...... not that we are immigrants, but there is a huge influx of cheap workers...

Don't you complain about NAFTA?

Why? We are only bringing it back home...

Sorry Rsty this is a progressive problem. I don't know of a TeaPartier that has said "catch and release" was a good idea.

It most certainly is Obama is asking congress for 3.7Billion dollars, almost $1000 dollars a day for the undocumented immigrants...

Homeless children don't have any funding that is near that.....

Its more than I make in a year.... how can this be?

If you state you are a christian, and you are ready to ignore these children, by leaving them homeless and hungry, you are a charlatan and a fraud.

Why not just pull the $3.7 from foriegn aide? We can start with the countries that sent these illegal aliens and move on from there. Maybe eliminate all money earmarked for Palistinians and Israel until they agree to a cease fire. Maybe reduce our financial support for the U.N. to offset the cost.

Schmanch, if you are a Christian and you get up and go to work each day instead of reaching out to help all the suffering people on the planet you are a charlatan and a fraud. Each and every day.
