Chris Hedges: Israel is currently attacking a population of 1.8 million that has no army, no navy, no air force, no mechanized military units, no command and control and no heavy artillery. Israel pretends that this indiscriminate slaughter is a war. But only the most self-deluded supporter of Israel is fooled. The rockets fired at Israel by Hamas -- which is committing a war crime by launching those missiles against the Israeli population -- are not remotely comparable to the 1,000-pound iron fragmentation bombs that have been dropped in large numbers on crowded Palestinian neighborhoods; the forced removal of some 300,000 Palestinians from their homes; the more than 160 reported dead -- the U.N. estimates that 77 percent of those killed in Gaza have been civilians; the destruction of the basic infrastructure; the growing food and water shortages; and the massing of military forces for a possible major ground assault.

"Raul Hilberg in his monumental work The Destruction of the European Jews chronicled a process of repression that at first was "relatively mild" but led, step by step, to the Holocaust. It started with legal discrimination and ended with mass murder. "The destructive process was a development that was begun with caution and ended without restraint," Hilberg wrote.

The Palestinians over the past few decades have endured a similar "destructive process." They have gradually been stripped of basic civil liberties, robbed of assets including much of their land and often their homes, have suffered from mounting restrictions on their physical movements, been blocked from trading and business, especially the selling of produce, and found themselves increasingly impoverished and finally trapped behind walls and security fences erected around Gaza and the West Bank."

As long as we aren't part of it, let it happen. I cannot fault the Israelis for firing back. Imagine for a moment that California was a sovereign nation and that San Diego was periodically coming under rocket attack from Tijuana, who claimed that closing the border was genocidal, Oregon was shelling Crescent City over weed exports and Nevada was fighting a civil war which threatened the Southern California water supply. Would you not expect California to retaliate?

Neither did the Taliban.

It's a war on terrorism Shawn. What would you suggest, invite Hamas and Hezbollah for matzo balls and kosher pickles?

Oh, that would be a "blast".

It is a war OF terrorism. The American empire created this situation, and continues to keep it in place so that it can steal the regions oil.

There is nothing accidental about it.

Stop giving the state of Israel billions, and the apartheid will have to end or it's economy goes bust.

Stop vetoing UN resolutions and Israel would have to stop doing this stuff or face sanctions.

There is nothing complicated about it.

We give Israel $3.1 billion in military aid a year. We wrote the check for a lot of those missiles.

The Taliban ran a country, so they did have a military and arms for a while.

We give them far more than that. Plus weapons that we don't sell to others. Plus we veto UN resolutions which would most likely have ended the problem long ago.

I'd go one step further than Hedges and say both governments in that region seem to be addicted to their self destruction.

We are watching the Stanford Prison Experiment unfold before our eyes. That is why some cheer while others ask for cessation.

Israel will not survive as the student behind the shaded sunglasses who has let power overcome morality.

One reaches the point of no return and becomes soulless and Machiavellian.

Think about it, Settler teenage boys burn a Palestinian teenager alive due to rhetoric.

Lost souls...

For those who don't understand the history of the region here's a helpful article about why Israel was created at the end of WWII.

Hint: The Nazi's had powerful friends in the region.

What has happened recently is just a small part of Israel's 66 year war against the native population, much like our war against native Indians. We got away with it, but the world has changed. Israel has lost support from all nations except the USA.

Tor you are wrong. The American empire created Israel to control oil. It didn't give a #$%^ about Jews then, and it still doesn't. And Israel will be abandoned as the oil runs out.

The term "captive" implies a lack of choice.

I did, and list most wikis, it is politically correct bs.

The truth being that both world wars were almost entirely over oil.

ww1 = entirely

ww2 = the Treaty of Versailles, and oil.

That is why people don't understand that Israel is an American military base for oil control. Most think that ww1 was over some stupid duke or some other nonsense. And ww2 was supposedly about giving a rats #$% about Jews or some other garbage.

American society is so heavily censored that it is almost impossible to read about American corporations funding the rise of the Nazis. It just happens to be true. It didn't give one sick #$%^ about dead Jews, Poles, gypsies, Russians or anyone else. Not one single solitary #$%^.

Actually the British Empire created this situation.

Tor, great read and thanks.

Shawn, how does siding with a country that has no oil, and is the number one enemy of all oil producing nations in the area, validate your ridiculous statement? America did what was right in 1948, back the creation of a homeland for the Jewish people.

#24 | Posted by CrisisStills at 2014-07-15 09:38 AM | Reply | Flag: | Newsworthy 1

"creation of a homeland for jewish people" -- it sounds so warm and fuzzy.

it's more like 'stealing land to appease zionist terrorists'

but has anyone successfully played the sympathy card more often than the zionists?

"it's more like 'stealing land to appease zionist terrorists'"

The Brits encouraged jewish immigration because they were just following their SOP when trying to control a foreign territory.

Preferably, they would turn one local group against another as a means of controlling them all.

If that wasn't possible then they'd import another group to give the locals someone else to hate. Its what they did in Northern Ireland and its what they did in Palestine.

They weren't anticipating the later actions of the Nazis, which totally fouled up the balance of power they were trying to maintain.

It wasn't an enemy of all the other nations until it became an american military base. And you have to be deliberately obtuse to not understand that. Same canned propaganda response. Think of another one.

And native americans who called for the white man to go home were terrorists.

More garbage propaganda.

We give Israel far more than that, but what is far more important is that we give them weapons technologies that we don't give others. Also deliberately glossed over by the marketing here is the UN protection that allows this situation to continue. Resolution after resolution vetoed by the American empire.

There is no debate. None.
