Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, July 12, 2014

Everyone knows that Congress is politically polarized, but why? One promising place to look for an answer is state legislatures, where fewer moderates, it turns out, are opting to run for higher office. That's the chief takeaway of a study released Wednesday from Duke University. Upon tracking 569 legislators between 2000 and 2010, a researcher found that those in the "ideological middle" of state chambers are much less likely than their peers at the ideological poles to make a run for a U.S. House or U.S. Senate seat.

What a horrible candidate pool we have.

Scum bags have long been trying to turn words like "moderate" into a vulgarity and it looks like they're having success.

Not sure I agree with the conclusion.

I think a lot of the polarization is due to two things:

1) polarizing news sources

2) primaries that require candidates to take extreme positions in order to get a majority of the votes in a low-turnout party-only primary.

imo, it's the primaries that are turning out more and more of the more extreme candidates.

Dems don't run extreme liberal candidates. They put up a full range of choices.

It's only GOTP that run righter-than-right loons.

Nope, sorry, try again.

You can blame this on everyone and anyone you want but the fault lies with the rank and file american people.

People no longer seek reason. They no longer desire to be more intelligent. They only want to be on the 'side' that's 'winning', at all costs.

Don't believe it? Next time you want to talk about moderate views, tell your listener about how, historically, every empire crumbles from within, due to a lack of moderation and extremist corruption. They won't hear you unless you are saying 'the other side is to blame for everything'.

The media encourages this because their main goal is to pump more product advertisements into your head, and to keep you engaged in the sensationalism. Their job is not to keep you informed on issues.

Sorry but the fact is it that it is easy to manipulate the sheeple especially given the funds in political races today. Market research is a science - granted some alchemy mixed in. But what is happening is people are being manipulated into polarized position without using their own reasoning power anymore and it originates from the GOP. Karl Rove is the mastermind and has admitted it was a mistake to go down this path.

OK try this.

Dems do not run as non-moderates, not as progressives, or liberals. They don't publicly talk about single-payer. In primaries, they do not run to the left edge to get votes. You do not hear them calling each other out for wanting to pass bills or deal with the other side. Compromise is not a cuss word for dems.

Yet to GOTP, dealing with dems means dems adopting GOTP ideas, and not giving an inch. Not all dems are greenies, pro-choice, or anti-gun.

Finally, dems don't attack their own as DIMOS--there's no such word.

The candidate pool is missing PATRIOTS....as in USA first.

GM can't be a successful car company when the BOD and CEO works for Toyota. I heard Ted Cruz making an absurd impassioned speech today telling us how the Israelis need our help and our money. We've given them trillions and it has destroyed us.

He and others need to understand we USA citizens expect allegiance to the USA from officials instead of politicking for more money from AIPAC.

Yep. This is why we can't have nice things. Like fair minded moderates.

There are plenty of moderates. They're called democrats.

What the candidate pool is missing is LIBERALS - people who want to prosecute bush and cheney, prosecute and regulate the wall street sociopaths, incorporate the costs of environmental damage into every product's price, establish a public option for health care, and greatly reduce the military budget.

PLenty of citizens want those things, but our legalized corporate bribery system of election funding means no candidates can represent these views,
