Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A lesbian student who married her partner was expelled from an Oklahoma university one semester shy of her sports management degree. Christian Minard, 22, attended Southwestern Christian University. As part of her admission requirements, she signed a lifestyle covenant that prohibits "homosexual behavior." She married partner Kadyn Parks in Albuquerque, N.M., on March 17. "Students violate parts of that covenant all the time, but they don't get expelled," Minard said. "I didn't even get a hearing, just a letter to my parents."

Wow. Talk about a bad life decision.

I just can't comprehend what would make someone want to go to a jesus freak school.

I certainly knew when I was picking a university that there was no way I would ever go to any school with any sort of religious affiliation.

And I guarantee that there are state schools all over the country with sports management programs. Any of those would have been a much better choice for her.

It's sad the school is expelling someone for marrying, but this student was foolish to think the private Christian school would ignore her actions and let her finish her degree there.

Instead of attending a little bitty school with 850 students that made her sign a contract not to be gay, she should've gone somewhere less intolerant of gays.

If she had only one semester to go, why didn't they just wait?
What's the rush? I mean, it's not like one of them got the other pregnant!

Worst case scenario is she enrolls in another school -- and Darkvader's right, there's no way this is the only school nearby to offer a degree in sports management -- and has to make up some elective credits that won't transfer.

But of course the big question for me is, why did she go to a school that required signing such a "covenant"?
It's not like it was her only option, she just didn't think it through.

Meh, she's 22, it won't be the last mistake she makes, and it won't be the worst mistake she makes.

"There isn't a similar program at an area university, so I'd have to change my program of study," Minard said. "And, being one semester from graduation means I have taken all my electives. I'll lose all those credits if I transfer."

I don't see where it says what she is studying, but perhaps this school was the only local option she could afford.

At any rate, waiting another semester to marry might have been wiser, considering the school's intolerance.

It's possible she didn't know she was gay until after she began college.

I thought college was just where all girls find out they're bi, before telling future boyfriends it never happened and there will be no threesomes.

I'm sorry. I was just reminded. That they were really drunk, it never happened, and it's still no.

"It's possible she didn't know she was gay until after she began college."

True. Or, hadn't acknowledged it to herself.

Still, would've been wiser to wait until she finished her degree.

If this school has a tax exemption, my tax dollars are paying for their government services. And funding the student loans, and Pell Grants.
This school, like most colleges probably would not exist without taxpayer support.

It's 110% her own fault.

Plus she's dumb.

One semester till graduation?

This must be some sort of publicity stunt.

I bet another school picks her up and allows her to graduate there on their dime.

If that were the case, I think I would have even less sympathy for her, as she associated herself with a hateful organization when she thought it did not impact her and only changed her tune after she was discriminated against.

On second thought, for all I know she was advocating for change from within the entire time. I guess that'll learn me to stop jumping to conclusions and judging others.

She should have waited until the day after graduation and then had a very public wedding and make sure that she sent last minute invites to all the faculty and administration of her school.

At least she was not physically assaulted. When Mitt Romney was in prep-school, he had his friends beat-up and hold down, a much smaller Gay kid, while Romney chopped the crying kids hair off. The lying Romney denied the incident happened, at first, before he apologized LOL

This is an example of that odd progressive hypocritical tolerance for every ethnic group but Christians? I once had a liberal aetheist neighbor who inferred he wouldn't do business with a tradesman who had one of those "fishs" on his advertisement. I told him he was blatantly bigoted. I then asked if it would be acceptable if one said the same because of a star of David on his ad?

I refuse to accept that the left can be broadly critical of groups that they do not know soley because of religion, stereotyping, race, ethnic, etc... Christians as a group are neither monolithic nor evil even if those in the intolerant bigoted and racist left like to portray them as such. Many conservative religious sects from Jews to Muslims are ideologically antagonistic regarding certain sexual behavior.

We need to spread tolerance instead of intolerance.

Christians are stereotyped as having a persecution complex, and this young lady is as clear an example of that as i can imagine. Something very wrong compelled her to screw up her career path, and that something wasn't her "choice" to be gay.

#25 | Posted by kenx at 2014-07-13 03:15 AM | Reply | Flag:

#25 I would claim if there is any demographic group that doesn't have a persecution complex it is those of Christian heritage or Anglo ethnicity. If there is any group that is broadly persecuted by the "elitist left" it is those of Christian heritage and culture. The "EL" claims cultural pride is hunky dory for some but not others.. Cultural pride is not to be confused with supremacy that some project on both sides and in various groups.

She didn't "screw up her career path", although she may see it that way at the moment. She IS 22, after all.
She goes to another school, makes up her non-transferable credits, and life goes on.

Yes. Judaism is their religion. But, coverting to Judaism doesn't make you a Jew.

Correct, she did not irreparably screw it up. She caused an unnecessary delay in getting to work (where time & early experience is very valuable), and possible damage to her reputation (not necessarily that she is gay, but that her judgment is clouded).

A convert to Judaism is a Jew. i don't think Jewish is a race, as Caucasian (White), African-American (Black), Chinese (Asian), etc., are races (certainly not in law enforcement as a descriptor). Persian and Arab, for example, are races which are harder (but not impossible) to distinguish (Middle Eastern).

East Indians are now classified as Asian, as India is on the continent of Asia. Their language is considered of Caucasian origin, established long before English of course. i disagree with this new racial categorization.

The Jewish question (oops) is interesting. There is a Jewish culture. But at the same time, Jews come from a wide variety of "ethnicities."
