Saturday, July 12, 2014

Tommy Ramone, the last surviving member of the legendary punk band The Ramones, has died at his Queens, N.Y., home after a battle with bile duct cancer. He was 65. Born Erdelyi Tamas, in Budapest, Hungary, the founding drummer of the band co-produced their first three albums in the 1970s. He was preceded in death by band mates Joey Ramone (2001), Dee Dee Ramone (2002) and Johnny Ramone (2004).

Sad news. This is a fitting time to discuss which of The Ramones' songs was the greatest. I think I'm still going with "Blitzkrieg Bop":

There has never been another band like the Ramones. So glad I got to see them perform live.

Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat
Beat on the brat with a baseball bat
Oh yeah, oh yeah, uh-oh.

Classic lyrics from a real classic rock band.

The term "Punk" actually came from the CEO of MCA to describe independent record companies that signed supposedly lesser talented bands to their labels. MCA, Polygram and the other majors would only sign "high concept" artists who played large venues and did Dick Clark at least once.

Hard to imagine that KISS was a punk band before they sold out to corporate america and started wearing makeup and doin the KISS ARMY schtick.

Ramones and even the Sex Pistols never sold out. They played the music they wanted and didn't care about the rest of it. That was not the proper attitude for the corporate (make the moola) types. That's why its called the "music business". They could not get behind anything they couldn't totally control.

Which is kinda the point even today. It is by no accident that rock music mush on the FM Radio all sound alike everywhere in the US.

The Ramones sang "I wanna be sedated"... and we were....

They will be missed.

Umm, no. The Sex Pistols are as fraudulent as you can get. One of the original boy bands that was the brain child of Malcolm McLaren.

At least KISS was honest about their selling out.

I was never a fan, really, but there's no denying the impact they had.
What's amazing is that many rockers from the 60s are still around.

All but one of the original Stones...including Keith Richards, of all people.
All but two of the original Beach Boys.
All but two of Pink Floyd.
...of The Beatles.
...of The Who.
...of Led Zeppelin.
All but one of Deep Purple.
All but one of Yes.

Hell, isn't Chuck frickin' Berry still kicking?

Maybe, but their first (really only) album was great. Steve Jones is still awesome. The Clash, they were great. X was great, and still is.

Now only is he still around, but he still plays to sold out crowds at Blueberry Hill in St. Louis with some frequency.
