Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, July 11, 2014

LeBron James stunned the NBA on Friday when he announced he's returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers and leaving the Miami Heat. James made the announcement on Sports Illustrated's website in a letter. He wrote: "Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. ... In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned. You work for what you have. I'm ready to accept the challenge. I'm coming home. ... My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn't realize that four years ago. I do now."

The prodigal son returns. This is a great story. I'm glad he's headed back. The city of Cleveland deserves better. They haven't won a championship since 1964. This'll give them a chance. Good for the city, good for the fans and it's good for the NBA.

Eat it Heat! Hahahahahahahaha. In your ear, Pat Riley! Hhahahahahahha.

That's quite a love letter to Cleveland. I really like that aspect of it, as someone with a close friend who has strong ties there. I visited once for his wedding and had fun in the Flats and at Jacobs Field.

So are all the people from outside Miami who became "Heat fans" after Lebron and Bosh signed still going to pretend to be Heat fans for another season or two?

Will be interesting to see how people jump off the most flagrant bandwagon there has ever been....

You're counting your Parsons before they're hatched.

Even if you get him, Cuban created big salary cap hassles for you.

Good point Sully. I makes me warm and tingly thinking about those losers buying jerseys and hats etc... and now will be to ashamed to wear them.

Why would you be a fan of a team outside your metro area if not for a player?

I don't see the "interesting" at all, seems reasonable, I see people liking a player and thus a team. You can't buy a LeBron jeresy without it saying "heat" on it....

Why will it be "interesting"?

yes and no...he's still an unrestricted agent....getting rid of lynn and the asik frees up about 30 million at least....

also, I read that as unrestricted agent, part of this offer isn't included...waiting on verification from sports guys, but I think that's correct...

just told....parsons and bosch CAN happen....but needs more cap room...if anyone can do it...daryl moreley can....

so it's wait and see....problem with parsons offer is the year after...according to source who also happens to be sports pundit on radio....

For the exact reason I said: Frontrunning.

"I don't see the "interesting" at all, seems reasonable, I see people liking a player and thus a team. You can't buy a LeBron jeresy without it saying "heat" on it...."

Well this is an example of you being a girl and not understanding how guys act. When guys get together and talk crap about sports, the worst you thing you can be is a bandwagon jumper. They will often ignore that behavior when it comes to females because they are holding onto the idea that one day they may be able to sleep with the female in question.

#26 | Posted by Sully at 2014-07-11 01:57 PM | Reply | Flag: | Newsworthy 1

Sometimes when you adopt a team for a player you stick around when he's gone because you like the rest of the franchise. I adopted Spurs in 2006 in the EPL because of Edgar Davids, a whirling dervish of a soccer player. After he was gone I stuck around until I got sick of the team's constant player transfers last season.

I can't see that happening with Miami, though. They're going to be terrible.

Miami will go back to not giving a whit about the NBA.

Now, if the Lakers can somehow get Carmelo and Gasol, all will back to normal.

Because you have ties to another state or city, perhaps by birth, or by long residence there, or there's no team in your metro area, etc.

Posting from Miami, not a Heat fan, last week nobody believed Lebron would be gone. After he met with Pat Riley for a shockingly short 1 hour meeting, it was a done deal. Good bye South Beach how Lake Erie. Apparently, Lebron's pregnant wife was calling the shots, that and the fact that Cleveland seems to have a better team than Miami. Looks like Bosh isn't going to stay either, meaning Dalton's right, Wade needs to retire and spend more time with the idiotic fashion scene.

So glad he's not going to Houston. He's such a crappy tipper. I'd feel terrible for all of the servers, bartenders, and strippers in southeast Texas if he took up residence there.

It could happen I could see someone becoming a "legitimate" fan that way. For example, if someone was a big Shaq fan and became a Heat fan when they aquired Shaq and then remained a Heat fan until today, I'd consider them more of a legit fan than someone who only started rooting for them in 2010. (Not that there are any rules to what a real fan is) But I doubt anyone who jumped on the bandwagon in 2010 is going to stick around until they get good again.

Lebron may be thinking about his post-career career. In Cleveland he will once again be King James, after losing the championship his chances of being King of Miami probably seemed dim.

Moving Lin to Los Angeles will clear most of the salary cap space necessary to sign Bosh to a four-year, $80 million-plus contract. The Rockets are still working to formalize a commitment out of Bosh, who will leave Miami because of the departure of LeBron James to Cleveland. The Rockets also plan to match Chandler Parsons' three-year, $46 million offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks once Bosh has committed, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Bosh was planning to speak to Houston coach Kevin McHale on Friday afternoon, a source said.

"Lebron may be thinking about his post-career career."

When I read the letter he wrote I think he was saying all good things.

But my cynical side was thinking "Maybe he's realized that he's never going to be considered the greatest just by winning a bunch of titles. Maybe he's thinking that winning in Cleveland would make him look better than winning more titles with a Miami."

But I never though he should have left Cleveland so I'm not going to be an ass about it now and criticize him for going back.
