Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Central Americans cross illegally into Mexico -- 400,235, to cite one oddly precise estimate from the Mexican National Institute of Migration -- along the country's southern border, which angles over 750 miles of river and volcanic slope and jungle at the top of Central America. Nobody knows exactly how many of those migrants are headed to the United States, but most put that figure at 150,000 or more a year, and the pace of illegal migration north has picked up dramatically over the past decade, propelled in part by the lingering aftermath of the 1970s and '80s civil wars in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. In depictions of this modern Latin American migration into the United States, the image of a great wave is often invoked, and Mexico's southern border today feels like the place in distant water where the wave first rises and swells and gathers uncontainable propulsive force.

So, we reap what Reagan and Bush sewed. Iran-Contra and similar brought us the karma of thousands of refugees streaming into our country. As with most poorly thought out foreign policy maneuvers by the right the unintended consequences are a bitch. The one thing I have learned in my life, the right wing doesn't ever bring anything good, their efforts to rule in far away places creates chaos in those places and long term problems for us here. We are now seeing the long term effects of their meddling and terrorism in S. America and Central America decades ago.

Who were the Nicaraguan Contras? Small government conservatives murdering, raping and diappearing those who demanded to change the inequality of wealth and income in Nicaragua. Who are the small government crazies here today, America's Contras though slightly limited by laws and law enforcement and that's why they want "smaller government." Government that isn't powerful enough to integrate the South, government too small to actually enforce federal laws against "violations of civil rights" which is what the feds charge murderers with when unjust courts refuse to convict racist murderers. We saw what they want, the Bundy militia. What they don't want? A federal government with the power to meed a Bundy militia and arrest those criminals and put them where they belong; in jail.

Danni, to raise the funds for the right-wing Contras, Ronald Reagan illegally sold some of our most sophisticated weapons (for less than we paid for them) to his fellow conservatives in Iran.

We should never forget the Iran-Contra Scandal
