Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, July 05, 2014

The campaign of Congressman Bill Cassidy, a Republican primary candidate for U.S. Senate running to oppose Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, announced Thursday that his unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. The girl begins her senior year in high school in the fall. Cassidy said in a statement, "Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support."

The New Orleans Times-Picayune observed, "It's not as certain that word about the Cassidy daughter's pregnancy would have been disclosed without Thursday's announcement. But by disclosing the information, the Cassidy campaign can avoid somebody perhaps using social media to reveal the news in a gossipy way."

If only all unwed teenage mothers had two physician parents living under one roof to help them navigate the turbulent waters of childbirth and childrearing with loving support and compassion.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case and it's one of the reasons comprehensive sexual education and accurate information and access to birth control should be viewed as something in everyone's better interests. Of course, an absolutely open and forthright conversation and understanding about these topics with a loving parent(s) or trusted guardian/role model may be the most crucial part of all when and where it's available. But reality tells us many many teenagers don't have stable homes or involved parents or guardians as they navigate the road between adolescence and adulthood.

Man is a biological creature just like all other living beings in nature. We are here because our ancestors all had sexual relations as did their ancestors before them and on and on. Though we have free will, we still have hormones and instincts too. Recognizing man's frailty is only seeing exactly who and what we are as a species biologically in human form.

Why is this even anybody's business?

Because the congressman is a Republican? I couldn't possibly care less.

Screw anyone who decides not to vote for him over this; they're too stupid to merit any regard whatsoever.

Ask the Congressman. He made it news by making the announcement. It might have come out anyway, of course, but I wonder whether he should've waited for that eventuality instead of pre-empting it.

Read the article. He knew being a conservative, he would receive the loving treatment that Sarah Palin received by those that proclaim they are so much more tolerant than those on the right.

Teenagers will do no matter what the upbringing. When I was in high school my ministers son, a senior at the time knocked up a girl and the daughter of the same minister got pregnant in her junior year. His other three kids managed to stay out of 'trouble'.

Rep. Cassidy really missed an opportunity to put a positive spin on this. He could have said something like:

Today we are pleased to announce our unwed teenage daughter has confirmed her status as a heterosexual...

Sound like a good argument for comprehensive sex education, including the use of contraceptives and distribution of birth control in schools.

"I wonder whether he should've waited for that eventuality instead of pre-empting it."

The question I ought to have posed is: Why SHOULD it be anybody's business?
I do have to give him some credit for getting ahead of the story, because it almost certainly would have come out, and it would have been worse for him had it come from outside the campaign.
What makes me roll my eyes is that this sort of thing is deemed important enough to make public to begin with, and that his daughter's pregnancy can be used to devalue his candidacy.

"He knew being a conservative, he would receive the loving treatment that Sarah Palin received..."

Palin was in a national campaign, though, whereas this is a senate primary, so I think the parallel only partially works.
For the record, though, I don't think the "loving treatment" of Palin over Bristol's pregnancy was justified, or even decent.
Given that Palin is supporting a rival primary candidate, it will be interesting to see if Maness or his supporters try to make hay of this.

Cosponsor of the Abstinence Education Reallocation Act of 2013, Congressman Bill Cassidy announced on Thursday that his 17-year-old daughter is having a baby out of wedlock.

Cassidy and his wife are both doctors, and their new grandchild is due this summer. Congressman Cassidy is a Republican candidate for Senate in Louisiana.

Next time he should say, "I abstain" on any votes before Congress regarding abstinence.

Lousyanna, another red State with a Dark Ages education system that refuses to acknowledge our sexuality. This gal is lucky to have the financial support of the few wealthy citizens in a sea of poverty that defines the Conservative, racist South.

We *need* MDs more than we need another politician. If someone takes grants for training to be a doctor, I think they should actually *be* a doctor, or at least pay back the grants, so someone who *really* wants to be a doctor could use them.
...And if he can't even manage to lead his own family effectively, why would he be able to lead a larger group?
