Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, July 04, 2014

Richard Mellon Scaife, a billionaire publisher whose philanthropy helped redefine the American right-wing in the 1980s and 1990s and who helped underwrite a range of anti-liberal causes, most famously his political attacks against President Bill Clinton, died July 4 a day after his 82nd birthday. His newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, announced the death but did not disclose the cause. In May, Scaife wrote in the newspaper that he had "an untreatable form of cancer."

He was a major underwriter of the American Spectator magazine's "Arkansas Project" to develop financial and personal dirt on the Clintons in the 1990s. The effort included writer David Brock's magazine story containing allegations from four Arkansas state troopers that they helped procure women for then-Gov. Bill Clinton.

Brock said he was suspicious of the troopers' stories but supported their publication anyway, once telling the Washington Post, "I did what was politically useful. [Clinton] was a Democrat, therefore he was a target."

"Mr. Scaife was unpersuaded. In 1998, he told George magazine editor-in-chief John F. Kennedy Jr. that the Foster death was "the Rosetta stone to the Clinton administration," referring to the ancient Egyptian stone used to decipher ancient hieroglyphics, and that Bill Clinton "can order people done away with at his will. He's got the entire federal government behind him."

He also questioned Starr's other investigations of Clinton's activities, including the president's affair with former White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky. "Four years and $40 million later, we haven't gotten anything," he said. "Maybe Ken Starr is a mole working for the Democrats."

As a strong backer of the legal and political strategies against the Clintons, Mr. Scaife made Time magazine's list of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997. The magazine called him the "horsepower" behind the "resurgent" right wing."

This man lived long enouigh to see Bill Clinton morphed into a beloved American icon----Even by Republicans.

So I guess he started rolling long before he even got to the grave.

By the way, that's how it will go with Obama. It only took fourteen years for the Right to stop asserting that Bill was the worst president ever and the Anti-Christ to boot.

It'll take sixteen years for Obama, however, because of the racial complication.

#8: You shouldn't wish for such things for a sitting president currently in office. Ohhh, my bad. You meant the older one. I get it now.

In hell he burns for crimes he inspired and a nation suffered from his scorn.

Good riddance~!

And that's the least offensive of my opinions of this particular menace to American's democracy.

One down and how many others to go?

We still have other scandal mongers who are trying, at least theoretically, to overthrow Obama's elections.

To their way of thinking, democracy isn't real democracy unless it goes their way.

Poor people are crazy. Rich people are eccentric. Considering all he spent and none of his claims stuck, he was definitely eccentric.

Maleficence vs benevolence. All that money and he chose evil over good works. It's the mark of a lifelong sociopath. That's a mental disorder way beyond eccentric.

It would be fitting for Scaife to be buried next to that coked-up ---------- Andrew Breitbart.

@ TWINPAC

Me think's he was pretty much just plain evil.

As a young man, he became friends with a family acquaintance, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.

I suppose he'll be buried in his favorite white chiffon evening gown then.

I wonder if, since he INHERITED his wealth but spent it chasing Bubba, if he's still eligible for the Rightwingnuts's Hall of Makers Pantheon?

Yup, yet another (ain't they all) lying, libelling rightwing media hero.

NORTHGUY3 Dick hated anyone and anything that reminded him of FDR.

Clinton could have been anointed by Jesus for his goodness and Dick would have still hated him.
