Abby Olheiser, The Wire: The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis' Archbishop John Nienstedt is well-known for his outspoken statements against gay people and marriage equality. And now, the Catholic leader is under investigation by a law firm hired by the Archdiocese, based on "multiple allegations" that Nienstedt had relations with multiple men, including priests and seminarians. The story was first reported by the Catholic magazine Commonweal.

The Archbishop became infamous for writing a letter to a Catholic mom, telling her she had to reject her gay son or burn in hell forever.

Commonweal magazine's Jennifer Haselberger: "I believe that the investigators have received about 10 sworn statements alleging sexual impropriety on the part of the archbishop dating from his time as a priest in the Archdiocese of Detroit, as Bishop of New Ulm, and while coadjutor and archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis. ... He also stands accused of retaliating against those who refused his advances or otherwise questioned his conduct."

It's becoming a stereotype that the most homophobic, homo-hostile individuals are gay, and use those methods as a disguise to operate within a (now decreasingly) homophobic society. The priesthood apparently gained a reputation as a safe haven to operate and hide. Those who rise to power are typically corrupted by it. (There's another current news story of a young guy being cut by an intoxicated middle-aged woman whose sexual advances he rejected.)

Archbishop Nienstadt apparently has rejection issues; retaliation for rejection isn't that uncommon in gay culture, unfortunately, where sex is valuable for status & currency.
