Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, July 01, 2014

In one of the biggest games in the history of the U.S. men's soccer team, the United States lost to Belgium 2-1 in a round of 16 elimination game in the World Cup. The game went to an extra 30 minutes after it was 0-0 at the 90 minute mark. Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku scored goals for Belgium, and 19-year-old American substitute Julian Green -- the youngest player ever to take the field for the U.S. at a World Cup -- scored to cut the lead in half with 12 minutes to spare. American goalkeeper Tim Howard had the most saves in a game in recorded World Cup history.

This is the game that will determine whether the US had a superior WC as opposed to merely an acceptable WC. This is the game that will make or break Klinsmans rep as coaching genius. My prediction: USA 2, Belgium 1.

Was never a fan until this WC. Any sport that gives you a valid reason to leave work early and meet friends for drinks is a worthy sport in my book. I believe!

traitor! America is going to go all the way!

USA!

USA!

USA!

Actually I am impressed they got this far, too. But, they could actually beat Belgium. There has been a lot of surprises. Regardless I am really enjoying the games.

This is a big one.

Go USA!

Why is our team not 100% American and not have a USA coach?

Klinsman married an American and has two American kids with her, one who is in the American soccer program. He's lived here for years. Who cares if he's an American citizen or not? Lots of World Cup-playing countries hire the best coach available regardless of his nationality.

Bummer to lose, but that Julian Green miracle goal made it fun to watch until the final seconds. Tim Howard saved more shots than any keeper in World Cup history.

My disappointment at the loss is mitigated by a really nice buzz from Stone India Pale Ale. I've been staying away from Belgian beers and drinking American, and Stone Brewing Co. in San Diego makes some fantastic beers.

It was the first time he touched the ball in the game...maybe they should have put him in sooner.

It was still a good game. Could have skipped the first 90 minutes of warm up tho.

USA USA USA should mean a lot more than a few overpaid soccer players kicking a goal or winning a match.

It should mean a nation that has an increasingly affluent critical thinking middle class willing and capable of criticizing scum bag politicians whose only concern is stripping the USA of its money and benefits for most, while empowering a corrupt Party.

Arguably the best game of the tournament so far. Tim Howard was a madman. We might have had a few higher quality chances but Belgium's overwhelming quantity of chances gave them the edge.

I'll take pride that we survived the Group of Death and beat our nemesis Ghana and never lost by more than one goal.

Thanks to our shield Tim Howard...he needed to be absolutely perfect for the win. And they should have put Julian Green in earlier ...We needed more offense to keep the pressure off our shield. I mean come on!

16 saves? That should have been plenty enough.

Awesome game tho. I still haven't figured out the adding time thing. How they can magically add time.

In soccer the clock never stops. The extra time is to make up for the playing time lost to stoppages for injuries, post-goal celebrationa, etc. The ref has a stopwatch. If you've been watching the match it's pretty easy to guess how much extra time there will be.

Surprise! 25 million Americans disagree with you. Oops.

Now go back to sleep old man.

With an audience of 25 million viewers for Sunday's game between the United States and Portugal, the World Cup is moving into elite territory as a sports property on American television. Ratings for the game were the highest for any soccer game telecast in America and reached more viewers than events like the N.B.A. finals or the World Series.

Yeah I kinda figured that...but at the end it seemed kinda arbitrary. They had 3 minutes added but after (what seemed) only about one minute they called the game.
