Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, June 24, 2014

The idea of sharing his love of books with his neighbors was thrilling to 9-year-old Spencer Collins. So, with the help of his parents, he set up a Little Free Library in their yard in Leawood, Kansas.

City authorities told the family to take it down. The Leawood City Council said it had received a couple of complaints about Spencer Collins' Little Free Library. They dubbed it an "illegal detached structure" and told the Collins' they would face a fine if they did not remove the Little Free Library from their yard by June 19.

You're not seriously arguing that Kansas is run by liberals, are you?

Hey, at least this kid has the guts to fight for what he believes in. That gives him twice as much backbone as most politicians!

There are several free library's around and several of them have gotten complaints by people who do not have anything worth while in their petty little lives except for their pettiness.
really if you see a free library some place and you feel like complaining their is something wrong in your life and you should seek some help, to get over your hardcore pettiness.
in other words if you are going to complain about something like this you are a horses behind

Good thing people complained. Wouldn't want any fancy ----- book lernin going on in Kansas.

#9 | Posted by Sully at 2014-06-24 09:35 AM | Reply | Flag:

The government didn't care at all until those good Kansas Liberals got it in their little minds to complain. This isn't a story about Government overreach, it's a story about how people are --------.

Headline incorrect. It should read "City Ordinance Enforced". That town does not allow playhouse, treehouses, or any other detached structures besides garages and very regulated storage sheds. Just because Spencer's got books sitting there rather than a toy collection or a dollhouse doesn't mean he gets to have one.

Fair is fair, no matter how cute the activity.

I mean for epte's sake if the town doesn;t allow DOGHOUSES, why would this be allowed?

#12 | Posted by soheifox at 2014-06-24 10:20 AM | Reply | Flag:

Wouldn't it be better to revise a bad law, than to leave it on the books and make everyone dependent on the whims of government officials regarding enforcement?

#13 | Posted by DoofusOfDeath at 2014-06-24 10:20 AM | Reply | Flag:

The presumption that it was a Liberal that complained is absurd. Conservatives are big on law enforcement, however, unnecessary or petty. A lot of it today is profit driven, don't send the kids home, make them pay huge fines and then send them to prison.

Typical conservative action. Kids who read books are more likely to go to college. Young adults who go to college are more likely to vote progressive. Books are bad.

(If the kid was smart, he should have camouflaged his little library as a gun exchange. Then there wouldn't have been a peep about the structure from the Kansas morons.)

"You're not seriously arguing that Kansas is run by liberals, are you?"

Leawood is a very nice suburb of Kansas City. Not the rural community run by a bunch of hicks, as many of you have assumed.

are they liberals? I have no idea.

just putting the town where it is....

According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $117,896, and the median income for a family was $136,871.[9] Males had a median income of $90,546 versus $43,933 for females. The per capita income for the city was $49,139. About 0.5% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.5% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.

not quite what you envisioned for Kansas, was it?

Leawood votes about 60% Republican and 40% Democrat.

I'm saying Leawood is one of the most liberal areas in Kansas.

I'm just trying to paint an accurate picture of Leawood. It was suggested by you that they would care more about guns than books.

You assumed that when you saw Kansas. It's not true. Leawood is a very highly educated populace.

So Governor Kathleen Sebelius was just a "one-off" kind of thing.

yeah....sounds like a place where "morons" would care more about guns than books. Wouldn't be interested in college either.

Compared to Kansas. How about compared to San Fran or Seattle?

Look, it's just plain stupid to make this into a "liberal" thing as Afk did, can we just agree on that?

Well, the same percentage of voters in Leawood voted for Romney compared to Kansans as a whole, and a higher percentage of Leawoodians voted for McCain than did Kansans as a whole.

Continue to defend that comment, Ebs.

Have fun.

yeah....it's stupid and it's obviously not what the law was intended to address but the law is clear so what does anyone expect the current city council to do regarding enforcement?

This is such an extreme example of following the letter of the law to the detriment of the community that I'm left wondering if someone doesn't have an ax to grind with the child's parents.

Exactly right Tor, the parents might be Union Organizers, anti-gun folks, gay marriage advocates or planned parenthood supporters. And the conservative city government is punishing the kid, for the sins of the parents.

I watched the news video, calling the "tiny book box" a structure is CRAZY

To complain that such government appears unresponsive and heavy handed and not serving the people, is currently being pushed as politically incorrect by the Anti-anti-government people and those who support expansion of the national security state. If we only had more drones and video camera surveillance the local police could prevent such events.
