Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

New York Times: The surge of desperate young migrants across the southwest border has the Obama administration scrambling to respond. It was clearly ill-prepared for a problem that grew steadily for years before exploding this year, with more than 47,000 unaccompanied children caught at the border since October. ... State officials in Arizona were furious that immigration officials, apparently without better ideas, had dumped hundreds of migrants at a bus station in Phoenix, with no resources, to find their way. Civil-liberties groups have reported that children have told of being beaten, harassed, threatened and sexually abused in detention. Some children, interviewed by groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and National Immigrant Justice Center, said they had no food or medical care and had been held in icebox-cold cells -- nicknamed hieleras, Spanish for freezers.

The administration, which has been racing to set up emergency shelters on military bases in California, Texas and Oklahoma and a converted warehouse in Arizona, needs to investigate and immediately correct conditions that threaten any child's safety and health.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency responsible for taking custody of the unaccompanied Central American children, badly needs to increase its ability to shelter thousands properly as they wait to reunite with their parents and be seen in immigration courts.

There is a humanitarian crisis occurring right now, here in America. Probably not since Katrina have we been hit with a crisis of this size. ...And most Americans do not even realize what is going on. This is not a partisan or political crisis. This is not a result of US policy or politicians. This is a flood in the wake of unrelenting violence in Central America. At the very least, we should all be aware of is going on at this very moment throughout Texas and Arizona.

LOL, where have you been Moder8? This has been going on for 4 weeks now.

This is not a result of US policy or politicians. This is a flood in the wake of unrelenting violence in Central America.

I am well aware of this talking point. But it isn't, the violence has been going on in central america for decades, don't tell me now all of the sudden the kids decide to come up here.

Its a manufactured humanitarian crisis, that is a direct result of not protecting our borders, and deporting those we find here illegally. Word spreads, so people assume they can get in....

Well guess what.... they can.

In fact we are going to give them the right to vote soon enough.

1. It is only a humanitarian crisis in the United States because we're letting them into the United States. It should be a humanitarian crisis in Mexico or the Honduras or Guatemala.

2. This IS a result of US policy, which is being trumpeted in newspapers in Central America. To paraphrase: "if you get in you won't be deported and they'll feed you". And I damned well WILL blame politicians, particularly those who are backing this "crisis" knowing that it likely means votes for them.

3. "National Immigrant Justice Center". Given that the IMMIGRANTS are illegal, JUSTICE would be best served by deportation.

had dumped hundreds of migrants at a bus station in Phoenix,

I remember the Gov of Nevada doing this with the homeless with one way tickets to LA and there was no outrage then.

In fact we are going to give them the right to vote soon enough.

Based on one proposed bill in NY? The "outrage" from the conservatives who will grandstand on this issue but do nothing about stopping it because it benefits CorpoRat America will kill it. Besides the US has a long history of letting aliens vote until xenophobia ran rampant in the early 20th century. So it is pretty far from being a "fact". Save your apoplexy for something that might actually happen.

#4 - Were those homeless, children? What would happen to you or ,I if we took children, not our own, and transported them across state lines??
But if the "benevolent" federal government does it, it just fine.

this is far from new. if you really want to see what these children do...how they go, their lives they risk, and how they travel.

WATCH THIS 2009 documentary. these kids are courageous, to say the least.

So let the United States of America take in the children of quitters. Why don't the parents of these children stand up and make their country of birth just like the United States of America instead of quitting and coming here and then trying to make this county just like the hell hole they left? Where will they go after they destroy this Country?

The UN and USA should go after both the parents of these children, and all others that are involved in encouraging them to put themselves at risk by traveling alone and illegally entering another country. We have a criminal term for it called child endangerment.

The crime is being perpetrated against Americans and likely by crooked politicians and immigration activists and operatives who would use any such event for political gain.

"So let the United States of America take in the children of quitters."

We call them "Cubans".

1) this is a huge story spiraling out of control over the last few days, and getting no attention here (on DR); not just children, but adults flooding the country.

2) some of them very sick & contagious, and some of them gang members (of a DEATH cult no less) & thugs.

3) this is not a breakdown at the border just because our military is busy growing opium in Afghanistan, and prepping to go back to Iraq.

4) it is an intentional swamping of this country which was already about to the breaking point. All of our medical personnel are about to get PTSD'd.

5) Mexico & the U.S. are the same country now, didn't you get the memo?

Draw a line in the sand and do something. Make a decision, whether popular or not. Deport them or make them citizens, but do something. I guess that is too much to ask of BHO.
