Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Clint Dempsey scored in the first 34 seconds and substitute John Brooks in the 86th minute as the United States men's soccer team defeated Ghana 2-1 in their World Cup opener in Brazil Monday night. Ghana dominated the second half after injuries to American striker Jozy Altidore and defender Matt Beisler, scoring an Andre Ayew goal in the 82nd minute. But on a corner set up by Fabian Johnson, Beisler's replacement John Brooks headed it past the Black Stars keeper. The U.S. and Germany are tied atop Group G after one game.

If Portugal is ranked the fourth best national team in the world and Uruguay is ranked the seventh best team in the world then these rankings have absolutely NO relevance to reality. 'Lowly' Costa Rica manhandled Uruguay and Germany completely dismantled a dismal Portugal team earlier this morning. The rankings are a joke. Right now, at this moment, the USA is almost certainly a better team than Portugal.

Mod8,

Soccer is all about defense. Even though the rankings may be based on each teams historical record, upsets are common because all too often the outcome is determined by one offensive play that went right, by luck or skill. But I do admire the footwork and ball handling skills these pros develop.

But I do agree his on-air somnolence is a little distracting.

If being beaten badly by Germany makes a team worse than the U.S., almost all teams fit that criteria. Portugal is a far better team than the U.S. and goes into their game Sunday as a big favorite. The U.S. is not yet a World Cup power. Portugal has been close to being one for a long time.

Some people on the left love to play the game "if you don't care about X you aren't allowed to care about Y or Z." If you want to live your life finding reasons to never enjoy anything because it nothing is 100% free of injustice and corruption, be my guest.

But personally, I'm with the millions of Brazilians and 3.2 billion people in the world enjoying the World Cup. It's a sporting event that unites the world like nothing else. I've paid some attention to the protests of the unhappy Brazilians, but since I am a long way from Brazil its local politics are not high on my list of concerns.

I note that no one has posted a link on the Retort about Brazilian World Cup protests -- not even the people complaining about this game getting attention here.

We can talk about the many problems Brazil has encountered getting ready for these games and the millions of regular Brazlians who were also excluded (like never before) from the games and the reasons for Brazil's faltering economy, and we should.

Or we could talk about that sweet sweet victory.

Id love to see the world in selective rose colored glasses... I feel i maybe an irreparable cynic. But when you say, billions of people enjoy this, just go with it, it kinda loses its luster no? Youre lack of concern over an international event being dumped on an underdeveloped and neglected populace is exactly what ensures that unity doesnt exist. I dont see unity in soccer, fans are not just stoked no matter who wins, and people die for it.

I never said "just go with it." In fact, I said you should be my guest not to enjoy it.

I enjoy the World Cup because soccer is a fantastic sport and this is the most watched sporting event in the entire world. I enjoy the Olympics too, and its governing organization rivals FIFA in troubles with corruption. College sports are managed terribly as well.

When Brazil was chosen to host the World Cup, a newspaper there polled and found 79% support for the selection. It wasn't until six years of mismanagement that it became unpopular. Brazilians aren't mad they got the Cup. They're mad at what they've done with that opportunity, and at how many promises got broken to make permanent improvements to the country's infrastructure.

No need to apologize. I can understand your perspective on this, but stories on a U.S. game result are going to be about that game because of how many of us are fired up about this competition. There's a better chance for side discussion of issues like the Brazil street protests in other Cup-related discussions.

I felt the USA was a better team than Ghana. Several people I watched the game with disagreed. My take on it was that so long as the USA was leading, Klinsman's game plan had us go into 'fortress mode' which by definition means that the other team will have possession of the ball most of the time. Personally, I thought going into fortress mode was a mistake. We were clearly at our best and most dangerous when we were in attack mode.
