Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, June 11, 2014

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has lost his GOP primary race in Virginia to economics professor Dave Brat, a tea party-backed challenger, Associated Press reported shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday night. With 186 of 243 precincts reporting, Brat led Cantor with 56 percent of the vote to 42 percent -- amassing a margin of almost 7,000 votes out of 52,000 counted. Cantor, the second highest ranking Republican in the House, was seeking his seventh term in Congress after first being elected in 2001.

The border situation is out of control, with immigration reform possibly taking the summer off, will Obama finally defend the borders?

Why would Obama want to change his approach to immigration? The more Republicans dump anyone in their party from Congress who might support immigration reform, the less likely Hispanics will vote Republican. This result seems like a gift to Democrats.

Cantor had $3 million and had gerrymandered the district. Brat was disorganized, had $40,000 and didn't meet with GOP backers. It's shocking he couldn't pull it off.

Soon they will have to start Gerrymandering to suppress the Tea Party from the right and the Democrats from the left.

What a bizarre place the "lame-stream GOP" finds themselves in.

You really do have a very negative view of this country you pretend to love. America is just like it always has been, immigrants flowing in, doing the worst jobs while being told they don't deserve to be here, then moving up to the next rung on the economic ladder in a couple of generations and then doing the same thing to the next wave flowing in. It made this country great, those who have tried to prevent the "melting pot" held back the nation just like they do today. Being the melting pot is exactly what made America special.

Cantor Campaign: Internal Poll Showed 34-Point Lead Over Tea Partier

"It's a historic defeat. Not since the 2004 defeat of Tom Daschle has a party's congressional majority leader lost an election; I'm still struggling to find a case where a majority leader lost a primary."

"A panicked fight-back. Cantor's campaign did gear up in a hurry to beat Brat. But the lines it came up with were -- what's a nice, neutral word? -- insane.

The Cantor campaign claimed, ludicrously, that Brat was a "liberal professor" because he served on a board at the appointment of a Democratic governor."

"Democratic chaos.

We don't know how many Democrats chose to vote in the GOP primary to oppose Cantor. We do know they were asked to. Ben Jones, the former "Dukes of Hazzard" actor and former congressman who challenged Cantor years ago (and lost) issued a popular open letter calling on Democrats (and anyone else) to cast a vote for chaos's sake.

There's no party registration in Virginia, so who knows how many Democrats in Richmond (where Brat won 45 percent of the vote) or Chesterfield County (55 percent) decided to dump Cantor?

A napping media and "establishment." This is a headline from the June 6 edition of the Washington Post.

Cantor internal poll claims 34-point lead over primary opponent Brat"

Many came that way but that was hardly the only path into the US, many came by much more circuitous routes. HEy, I'm wondering what Mexico thought about all those gringos who immigrated into Mexico, specifically Texas and then started a civil war to tear that portion of Mexico away? What happened to Cantor is symptomatic of what is happening in Europe. There's tremendous disatisfaction with the establishment and the ruling elite. Up to 65-70% of individuals have a gnawing sensation that the direction the country is going in is not healthy. The European Union along with the establishment got their heads handed to them in the recent elections. It's only a matter of time before more dissension occurs in this country. All it will take is the next recession and burgeoning inflation. It will come to a theater near you sooner then you think.

I think someone needs to actually learn about the history immigration in this country.

I am wondering if you are aware that the Bracero Program did not end until 1964? Up until that time Mexicans were legal immigrants?

Do you know why they were finally made "illegal"? I am not going to tell you..look it up yourself you lazy Texan!

It will always amaze me that one human being can consider another human being "illegal" just because they cross some imaginary line and they should not have access to the same Inalienable Rights rights as them.

It says right in our Constitution that all Men are Created Equal. It does not say Americans are more equal that every one else. WE probably shouldn't have put that there if we didn't really mean it.

He chairs the department of economics and business at Randolph-Macon College and heads its BB&T Moral Foundations of Capitalism program. The funding for the program came from John Allison, the former CEO of BB&T (a financial-services company) who now heads the Cato Institute.

The two share an affinity for Ayn Rand: Allison is a major supporter of the Ayn Rand Institute, and Brat co-authored a paper titled "An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand."

And despite Obama's decision to not deport Dreamers he has still been, by far, the toughest President on illegal immigraion in our history, by far tougher than Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton or Bush 2. Immigration is just a talking point these days, facts don't even matter to the anti-Obama crowd.

Section 3.

...he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed...

All men are created equal, but in the United States, all are subject to the Constitution and the Laws.

The Executive is responsible for taking care that the laws be faithfully executed.

The laws of immigration are not being executed in good faith. They are being violated.

Illegal immigration is immigration in violation of US Laws.

Illegal immigration would be easily resolved.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

Illegal immigrant - convict and sell.
There would be no longer any illegal immigrants in the US.

So pass immnigration reform so illegals can demand equal wages with American citizens but no, you think opposing reform and thereby creating a system whereby employers can exploit the illegal status of immigrants somehow helps the lower classes in America. ME thinks your concern for the lower classes is political not actual. In truth, you want the cheapest roof you can buy. You want the cheapest yard man you can find.
The real opposition to illegal immigration doesn't really have that much to do with jobs, it has more to do with xenophobes resenting people speaking Spannish right in front of them, as if, they don't have an obligation to speak English. I felt it too, a very long time ago in Miami, I realized a long time ago, they weren't necessarily talking about me, they weren't necessarily even making fun of me or even considering that I might be uncomfortable. They were just talking. GEt over it, your life will be much happier. I've grown to love the Hispanic community, they are warm and caring in ways the Anglo community is not so much. Well my outlook is different. These hispanics already vote democrat so sending them home makes more sense. In addition they bring drugs, diseases, and criminal records to our country. No its best to just never let them in and never give amnesty. Cantor learned this the hard way and others will have to do the same.

I'm not talking the time it takes to determine their status, but once found to be illegal, are they immediately removed?

If not, then the law isn't being faithfully executed. They must be removed.

I prefer prosecution. Illegal immigration is a crime. No choice between deportation or slavery. Slavery is the punishment for illegal immigration. Deportation will automatically occur, without the large financial cost of enforcement.

My guess is should it happen you'd have the police out there in about 15 minutes saying get them off my lawn.

There aren't enough jobs for actual real americans why should we import more people who are just gonna make it harder for poor americans to find a job. No illegal immigration might be the only way democrats can stay in power but its a recipe for disaster for our economy.

P.S. we already allow about 250,000 legal mexicans to migrate to the United States each year. Its about time Canada, Britain, France, Australia, and any other industrialized country in the world take on the rest.

Yeah, we can't prosecute enough mothers, take their children away, brilliant. When the law is about prosecution before justice you end up with a population with no respect for the law. Personally, I do not respect a law that would seperate a family simply because they are in the United States illegally but otherwise are law abiding. It eventually undermines the respect for all of the laws because they aren't based on the common good.

You don't think they are absorbing illegal immigrants into their country's, especially France, do you have any idea what is going on there? No, probably you don't.

They can reunite back in Mexico. Those who got an education here should take it home to help rebuild Mexico.

Judging Immigrants? Which ones are you talking about fruit pickers or MS13 gang members? Both come over the border illegally. However, when they have to come her legally only the fruit pickers get through. Also, since we allow about a quarter of a million a year to come here where do you get off acting like anyone who supports that but doesn't support those jumping the fences is any better or worse than you. I support the rule of law you don't except when it fits your tiny little narrow view of the world.

How can you support illegal immigration when many of those coming across the border illegally carry drugs, have violent criminal records, carry contagious diseases like untreatable tuberculosis, and take jobs from poor american citizens like young african americans.

No your support is because you hope it will give democrats a permanent majority at the polls and nothing else. You talk about compassion but I highly doubt you do anything charitable for any of these illegal immigrants.

Funny.. conservatives seem to have the most to complain about illegal immigration. If you really want to stop illegal immigration, why don't you ask the employers of said immigrants, most of whom are republicans, to stop hiring them. It seems pretty simple. If they can't find those jobs, the immigrants will go home.

Eric Cantor is the poster child for everything wrong with America for the last 40 years, where none of those elected to serve America served only others..

We have a corrupt Congress and WH that serves Wall Street, lobbyists, and other countries aidded and abetted by the MSM. They frittered away our shrinking treasury on costly stupid wars that created more terrorism instead of resolving it. They kept our borders open to import poverty and uneducated labor from every third world country. It hurt every American, and those on the bottom worst of all.

Immigration and amnesty will only hurt every American in the current economic climate of crappy minimum wage jobs and laid off 50 year old engineers doing yard maintenance (60 Minutes - June 8).

The weasel Cantor will cash in on all the corrupt deals he made to keep the billions in "aid" flowing to our special friend too. He spent our debt and other peoples money to enrich himself like most pols. He even wanted to hide Israel aid in the Pentagon budget. Good riddance.

Another Super ------ pushing for less Compromise and therefore less action on solving critical problems like immigration.

#7 | Posted by donnerboy at 2014-06-10 08:30 PM

Our "critical problems" have to do with creating a USA economy that creates good paying jobs for all American citizens, not by importing more poverty, voters for Democrats and gardeners/nannies for the Manhattan bankers, and Chamber of Commerce CEOs. We need to focus like a laser on rebuilding the American economy for average Americans, instead of listening to traitorous politicians who will go out of their way to overpopulate and change the face of and demographics of America, that in the end will only hurt most Americans.

Countries fail and citizens lose because of leaders that fail to put the country first. The USA has had decades of these bastxrds.

Never mind about the 50,000 factories that have been outsourced. Blame the illegal immigrant not the billionaire whose income has grown exponentially due to outsourcing. I swear, it is so laughable, the same people who complain about the effect of the illegal immigrant on wages while the same people defend the outsourcers of millions of good paying jobs.
Sorry, I just won't buy the b.s. sold to us by the corporations, it isn't illegal Mexican immigrants that is driving down wages, it is the outsourcing of jobs to China, India and soon Vietnam. But hey, let's just blame the Mexicans who have suffered at least as much as we have under the trade agreements stupidly agreed to by several Presidents and several Senates.

If you did, there would be nothing wrong with that. It's your money, if you want to help your family back in Pakistan it is those who pretend to find problems with that who are unAmerican. Americans largely believe in family, even if most of that family is outside the U.S. It's still family.

Ben Jones, the former "Dukes of Hazzard" actor and former congressman who challenged Cantor years ago (and lost) issued a popular open letter calling on Democrats (and anyone else) to cast a vote for chaos's sake.

If I recall correctly, when Cooter lost he told Cantor, "I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid."

We don't know why this happened. But it will be hilarious if Tea Party folks are celebrating tonight without recognizing that Democrats crossed over to knock off the second most powerful Republican in the House.

Cantor never got less than 58% of the vote in his district in the general. Democrats have a better chance to beat a non-incumbent to the right of Cantor than they ever had to beat Cantor. So I think this is good news for the donkeys.

Eric Cantor loss: Earthquake proving all politics is local

MARK Z. BARABAK

"This is the grass roots flexing its muscle and reminding members of the Republican leadership -- and reminding all Republicans -- that this is a very conservative party at the grass roots and they're angry," said Stuart Rothenberg, who analyzes campaigns nationwide for his nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report.

"And they care more about their anger and expressing their anger and electing someone who will express their anger than they care about electing someone who gets the best deal in negotiations with the White House or the Senate."

"In the instant search for beneficiaries and casualties, the establishment wing of the G.O.P. was an obvious loser.

Jim Messina, Obama's former campaign manager, tweeted gleefully,

"Eric Cantor losing. So much for the R's "tea party doesn't control us" narrative." He added, "That vomiting sound you hear is wise R's who just realized what the ‘16 nominee will have to say & do to get thru primary."

But might this be taking the argument too far. Clearly, the Tea Party hasn't gone away, but one swallow doesn't make a summer. In most big primary contests across the country, the G.O.P. establishment candidates have won, and the ---------- have been routed.

On the Democratic side, the big beneficiary is Brat's opponent in November, Jack Trammell, who until now was widely regarded to have no chance."

This is amazing news.

I don't know what it means.

Clearly the 'Tea Party' is NOT dead as the narrative suggests.

But it doesn't suggest that this is a Tea Party victory either - it smells much more like an anti-incumbent victory than anything else.

I think one clear message is that the GOP needs to move away from 'immigration' in the short-term.

What I am having the most difficulty with is figuring how much this primary is reflective of the national mood.

for Eric Cantor to lose, especially by a double-digit margin in a primary is a massive political event.

This strikes me as a 'throw the bums out' moment. If THAT is what this is really about then ALL incumbents should be scared.

Cantor's loss was probably a combination of rabid TPers and Democrats who voted for Brat in an open primary.

Cantor's loss means immigration reform is dead in the water. Might tickle the TPers and right wing base, but in poll after poll a growing majority of Americans favor allowing illegal immigrants with clean records to stay and be put on a path towards citizenship. And that's just one issue where the GOP cater to right wingers in opposition to where the majority of Americans are, on issue after issue.

I live in this district. Dave Brat is not a far right idealogue. In fact, he is probably more libertarian than anything. Cantor has been out of touch with this district for awhile now. Cantor was backed by the NRA and other traditional conservative organizations, so the lefties will have a tough time figuring out how to spin this.

Dems think immigration reform (or lact thereof) is their gateway to securing future elections. With this border crisis going on right now, this is a panacea for the GOP in November, and probably 2016. Dems are not serious about securing the borders and upwards of 100,000 illegal children will be housed in military bases just this year, while we "figure out a solution". The GOP should make illegal immigration their staple this fall. "Dems talk about income inequality, and the shrinking middle class...yet they won't do anything to stop illegals from entering the country and taking jobs from hard working, legal Americans."

In fact, after Obama is gone, the African American community will not be obligated to vote dem. They are the hardest hit group with this ongoing illegal immigration issue & the GOP should be focusing on getting that message out to the AA community.

America is just like it always has been, immigrants flowing in, doing the worst jobs while being told they don't deserve to be here, then moving up to the next rung on the economic ladder in a couple of generations and then doing the same thing to the next wave flowing in.

When you look at who is doing the screaming about illegal immigrants, it is not the capitalists that control the political process. Oh no, they want the illegals to come so their wallets get fatter off the illegal immigrants poverty wages.

It is the 'Mericans who won't pick lettuce or tomatoes for $7.25 an hour because the werk is too hard for them to do for so little that are bitching and squawking about illegal immigrants.

They are surprisingly also against raising the minimum wage to a level where 'Mericans would do the jobs they refuse to do now.

You jackasses want a "free market" solution? Open the borders. Let the free market determine who works where with no gubmint restrictions.

Your screaming and outrage over illegal immigration is just proof that you want government regulation over issues you care about. Ayn Rand is weeping at your actions.

good to hear from someone there..

what sort of chance or credibility even do you give to the idea that democrats got together and voted in massive numbers for brat in order to get cantor out ?

wrong again....but I understand the view when you're a supporter of obama on ANY ISSUE because that puts you in the radical left wing anti constitutionalists boat...

and AS ALWAYS...not JUST you, but any of you here...just because you parrot and repeat the 'company line', doesn't make it so especially in this case where you don't know much about him.

You jackasses want a "free market" solution? Open the borders. Let the free market determine who works where with no gubmint restrictions.

Your screaming and outrage over illegal immigration is just proof that you want government regulation over issues you care about. Ayn Rand is weeping at your actions.

#130 | Posted by 726 at 2014-06-

your 'free market' would be anything but as soon as democrats started STEALING my money to pay for education, health care, food and housing from MILLIONS of criminals in return for a democrat vote....

and apparently you have no CLUE about the invasion on the southern border of children being sent thanks to OBAMA and his flushing of the constitution...ALTHOUGH you might...and just simply don't care about all of those CHILDEN being left on the street corners in Arizona..

The fact that some rightwingers perceived Cantor as a RINO blows me away. It indicates a level of ignorance and frustration within the Tea Party that reaches level of being self destructive. Cantor was the one rightwingers relied on to stand up to Boehner's obsequiousness. Cantor was the one trying hardest to hold the extreme rightwing line. And now? The uneducated ignoramuses are claiming he supported amnesty for illegal immigrants? LOL. He voted AGAINST Obama's proposed immigration reforms. The extent of his 'support' for reform was limited to a hypothetical backing of legal status for children brought to the US as youngsters and raised here.

But no. This guy was a RINO. lol. You can't make this stuff up. On a personal note it appears to me that it is the stupidest and most politically illiterate rightwingers on this site who are happy with the result. Well good. I also happen to be happy with the result.

Surprised that you would make such a race-based generalization. Note, I didn't call you a racist, but your statement incorrectly implies that a majority, if not all, Hispanics are in favor of open borders, and amnesty for criminal trespassers, simply because they shared the same ethnicity with the perps.

If a white Republican has said exactly the same thing, he'd immediately be labeled a racist and ostracized, possibly even have his career ruined. Why the double-standard?

When the Democratic candidate beats your loonie tunes TPer in the fall (and now he suddenly has a chance at that) and takes Eric Cantors seat I am sure YOU will find some very choice words to use to describe him (and the TPers) for losing that very important seat in the House.

It used to be. Until 1964 when the laws were changed to make Mexican immigrants (workers) into "illegals".

It is really very simple.

Change the laws again.

There is a better chance of Obama calling himself a muslim than there is that the Dem will be Brat in the fall. I am willing to wager large sums of money for anyone that will take that bet.

of course not. If he loses, I will make a statement that liberals are incapable of making.

That while we lost, at least we lost with integrity and values in tact and didn't sell out and win with low life, American value hating left wing zealots whose only purpose is to bow before Obama as he continues to remove the constitution as our means of governing and liberal scum saying 'we the people' will mean as much as 'you can keep your doctor'...

The Democratic and Republican Party are the most corrupt political Parties in America.

They both work only for global cheap labor corporations, banks, overpaid CEOS, and lobbyists for our special friend. They use their media to keep the 300 million sheep that they own grazing and entertained in the field of apathy, while claiming we need another 100 million immigrants to make us a nation that is ethnically whole.

#158 | Posted by Robson at 2014-06-11 07:57 PM | Reply | Flag:

The national media is buzzing about Brat's victory, but for all of the wrong reasons. Brat called the main problem in government: corruption and cronyism. Brat went on to explain, "Eric Cantor and the Republican leadership do not know what a free market is at all, and the clearest evidence of that is the financial crisis … When I say free markets, I mean no favoritism to K Street lobbyists." Banks like Goldman Sachs were not fined for their role in the financial crisis -- rather, they were rewarded with bailouts. The folks who caused the financial crisis, Brat says, "went onto Obama's and Eric's rolodex.

Brat says what upset him the most about Cantor was his role in gutting the last attempt at congressional ethics reform. The STOCK Act, a bill to crack down on insider trading, was significantly watered down by Cantor in early 2012. The lawmaker took out provisions that would have forced Wall Street "political intelligence" firms to register as traditional lobbyists would, and removed a section of the bill to empower prosecutors to go after public officials who illegally trade on insider knowledge. Cantor played a leading role in blocking legislation to fix the foreclosure crisis while his wife and his stock portfolio were deeply invested in mortgage banks.

If Brat ascends to Congress, which is quite likely given the Republican-leaning district that he'll run in as the GOP nominee, he may actually continue taking on powerful elites in Washington. (Lee Fang)

Corporate personhood, corporatism, corruption, lack of legal free markets for consumers and especially American labor are much of the problem.

Neither Party is willing to understand and correct using ethics and common sense. Obama was elected only because Bush was so corrupt, and he glibly convinced many he was different. He is but another corrupt politician with either a D or R after his name.

The Tea Party was established by a grass roots that opposed neocon war mongers and a Congress that was corrupt and unresponsive to average voters. It was not far right politically. The elites that own the media diligently worked to make the TP appear as racist radicals only to discredit them just as they did with Buchanan and others.

Perhaps we'll discover a critical thinking public is much more attuned than the NYC media elite and bankers who have come to believe they control the USA with their $$$$.

A racist elitist Ivy League has no clue about "moral foundations" of anything. Their foundation is about pedigree, greed, and privilege. Yet our "free and open democracy" government at policy making level is overrun with their ilk, including that body (SCOTUS) that allegedly mets out objective justice.

And you all want to know why the USA has been corrupted and its once broad based middle class plundered, while NYC oligarchs run the whole show?

You know what made America special, Danni? When immigrants actually came to this country to be Americans, to leave their past behind and start over, to contribute to something greater. But now, all we get is the lower third of third world countries, lured here because they heard you could sit in the U.S. and get something called welfare. And even then, you can get a part-time job making the huge sum of $10 an hour, which is rich in their nations and live just like they do in their crappy nations. See, our "poor" to them is living nicely. And "they" continue to bring down our standard of living, and people like YOU keep inviting them in.

No, I have a great view of my America, I just don't have a good view of the people coming here these days. It's time we stop people from breaking the law and coming here illegally. They need to start abiding by our immigration laws, which YOUR president is all to eager to ignore.

#164 | Posted by boaz at 2014-06-12 12:46 AM | Reply | Flag: | Funny: 1

Boaz, I want to see if you understand where I'm coming from.
The fact that people do come here, even illegally, means people think they're better off coming here illegally than living legally wherever they came from.

If people ever stop wanting to do that, one of two things happened:
1. Their countries have gotten much, much better
2. America has gone into such a decline that coming here illegally isn't leaps and bounds better than suffering at home.

I'm worried that the path you'd like us to take with respect towards illegal immigrants can only "succeed" via the latter of those options.

Back when I was a kid, we had a system that worked pretty well. It was called the Brazos Pass system. Basically Mexican workers could get a visa for nine months, Working harvest and seasonal work in construction. When administrations of both parties started messing with a long standing program that worked the system fell apart. It became much harder to cross the border legally, so folks who need work stayed year round, Men started to bring their wives and kids to the US and the boom in the Mexicans in the US started to mushroom. We brought this on ourselves, Around me are Mexican and naturalized citizens, about a third of the neighborhood. They are good folks, they work, have businesses and raise their kids. They re in my opinion the new Irish.

Snoofy, are you suggesting that we are obligated to take these people in illegally because our bad is better than their worst? What kind of wacky logic is that? There is a legal process to entering this country. If you do that, good for you...and welcome. If not, stay the **** out, or you are getting shipped back home.

The American people support immigration reform IF border control is the first step in the proces. Obama is proving that securing the border is not a priority. Either that, or he wants this crisis as a political issue. If that is the case, he is truly a delusional man. Of course, he will blame the Repubs, but he is the freaking leader of the country. Take your message to the people and bypass the filter of the house & media. Clinton did it, Reagan did it. Obama can't, because he is weak & his message is muddled. Show some freaking leadership & stop the bleeding. He can't do it.

The can will continue to get kicked down the road.
