Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Laura Clawson, Daily Kos: The California Department of Transportation's decision to save money by hiring a Chinese company that had never built a bridge to build major parts of the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was troubling to begin with. A major Sacramento Bee investigation pushes it from troubling to terrifying. The article, by Charles Piller, details how Caltrans management was determined to stick with Chinese contractor ZPMC even as Caltrans inspectors repeatedly caught the company making significant mistakes and failing on quality control measures: But committee chair Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, suggested that Caltrans had tried to cover up serious problems with "a deliberate and willful ... attempt to obfuscate."

What have you been out of the country for the past 2 years?

Canadian officials fired IT firm behind troubled Obamacare website

Canadian provincial health officials last year fired the parent company of CGI Federal, the prime contractor for the problem-plagued Obamacare health exchange websites, the Washington Examiner has learned.

n Canada, eHealth, the Ontario provincial agency, scrapped its high-profile online medical registry for diabetes sufferers and treatment providers, and cancelled CGI Group's $46.2 million contract, on Sept. 5, 2012. The company was 14 months behind schedule when it was given notice of termination by the Ontario government agency.

Because you liberals can't see the writing on the wall.

Michelle Obama and CGI Federal
A: Toni Townes-Whitley, a senior vice president at CGI, and Obama graduated from Princeton University in 1985. However, company and government officials say the contract was awarded through a competitive bidding process.

It's true that the CMS did not accept bids from all comers to build the HealthCare.gov website. A Bloomberg report said the administration used an "expedited bidding system" that limited its choices to just a select few.
But officials for CGI Federal and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say it's not accurate that CGI Federal was the only firm considered for the job.
In congressional testimony, Cheryl Campbell, a CGI Federal senior vice president, said that the firm received the contract to build the site "through a two-step competitive process" that began back in 2007.

This coming from two of the key perps in the crime. More likely more than one bid was ALLOWED to be submitted. But Michelle Antionnette's buddy was the only bid considered.

I was in a meeting with someone a little while ago and he mentioned that his company (major administrator of employee benefits) was approached to try and help assist in fixing the website mess.

But knowing CGI's horrible reputation, they wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. They said "Thanks but no thanks".

Just thinking that CGI was capable of doing this work is gross incompetence at best. I personally suspect that there is more to it though.

And still live here

All those corporate giants,

Now we're finding toys

Get out of your mother's basement and keep up with the news.

Claim: HealthCare.gov was developed on a no-bid contract at a cost overrun of $634 million by a Canadian company selected because they donated $47 million to the Obama campaign and employ Michelle Obama's classmate as a top executive.

MOSTLY FALSE

Critics have repeatedly asked how CGI Federal got the contract, and there has been widespread speculation on online news sites and blogs that the firm was selected because of political ties to the Obama administration.

But a review of internal documents and interviews with former and current federal officials show that the selection process was walled off from politics.

As for the claim that CGI "donated $47 Million to Obama's campaign," records at OpenSecrets.org show no such expenditures by CGI's political action committee (PAC) during either the 2008 or 2012 campaign cycles. (CGI's president, George Schindler, donated $1,000 each to the Barack Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns during the 2012 presidential cycle.)

Looks like Brucebanner laid one Hulk of a smackdown on our resident rightwing moonbats:

The contract to develop HealthCare.gov grew out of CGI's initial bid and contract to provide technology services for the Department of Health and Human Services, a process which began in 2007, three years before Toni Townes-Whitley joined CGI and two years before Barack Obama became President. (BUSH'S FAULT)

The companies' past performance was not a priority. The CMS document listed it as the second least important of seven technical evaluation factors. And the review would look only at past work under the 2007 umbrella contract, the document said. (MORE BUSH'S FAULT)

As is tradition, the selection process was strictly sheltered from political considerations and political appointees at CMS or elsewhere in the administration, according to numerous former and current CMS employees.

"I deliberately stayed out of contracting," said Leslie Norwalk, the agency's acting administrator under President George W. Bush. "If that had changed, I would have heard rumblings."(ONCE AGAIN TEAM BUSH'S FAULT)

"Soon Iraq will be club med for terrorists. Good news, they will have American weapons to kill us with this time!"

It is odd to me how little Bush apologists understand cause and effect.

When we into Iraq and destabilized the whole country with no plan other than "they're gonna love us for this", this all became inevitable.

We occupied the place for 10 years. How long do you think that was going to last? Before we invaded you didn't know that eventually we'd have to leave? You didn't know that the public would rightfully have a problem with staying there forever and ever?

And when we leave and create a huge power vacuum, someone else is going to take over. And given the region of the world we are talking about, it was highly likely that the new leaders would be hostile towards us.

How could you possibly have not figured this out by now? What is happening now was eventually going to happen regardless of who was president after Bush. Maybe Romney would have kept us there longer and it all would have been delayed at the cost of more American lives and a billions of dollars. But eventually we'd have to leave and the next step was always going to be exactly what is happening now.

I know you are allergic to accountability but this is a direct result of horribly bad decision making by the president you cheered on for eight years. Nobody else is to blame.

This time? THIS TIME?

Haven't we been supplying our enemies and our friends weapons to kill us (and each other) with for decades if not hundreds of years? Weapons are what we do best.

Did you miss the whole Iran-Contra affair?

Did you not know we sold weapons including WMD anthrax, VX nerve gas, and mustard gas, to Iraq?

October, 1983. The Reagan Administration begins secretly allowing Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt to transfer United States weapons, including Howitzers, Huey helicopters, and bombs to Iraq. These shipments violated the Arms Export Control Act.

I knew a guy who worked for an export company that made huge amounts of money exporting high power outboard engines for boats, apparently there was a front in that war which was accessed by boats. All I know is that he exported every brand new engine he could get his hands on and made a fortune.
