Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

OK folks...strap on those thinking hats and break out the classic sci-fi. Whether we attribute the changes in humanity over the last 2000 years to improved nutrition or other external factors, the fact is that the average human today would be a giant in places like feudal Europe. If you look at the average NFL lineman next to the average from 40 years ago, they're behemoths. That makes me wonder....

What is the next great step in human evolution (or de-evolution)?

You mean after the Tea Party?

The ability to communicate using telepathy. Of course televangelists will shout it down as the "debil" and Faux Nooze will call it an elitist liberal conspiracy.

It appears broad political attacks have supplanted intellectual discourse.

As I have stated in the past, liberals love the idea of evolution. But the applicatoin of it baffles them.

Take WhatsLeft's quote, does this mean that TeaPartiers are the most advanced evolution wise of man? Perhaps..........

But to the question, we are going to see a bifurcation of the human species.....

There will be women that can provide for themselves, and want sensitive men, this will evolve men with more feminine features...

There will be women that will not be able to provide for themself and offspring, and will look for masculine physical features.

This will fork our tree.......

"It appears broad political attacks have supplanted intellectual discourse."

What you imagine to be "intellectual discourse" is mostly just BS.

#4: Interesting train of thought there Andrea. But I believe that will only be possible if technology continues to advance. As we can utilize technology to replace brute force that mostly only men can currently do. And indeed, the number of Mr. Moms are growing as women are indeed able to compete with men in most career fields.

Mackris your conceptualization of how evolution works.... it needs to evolve.

What is the next great step in human evolution

A greater social consciousness through technology.

Also, designer babies will make "natural" humans fade away. In a hundred years, everybody will be born "perfect".

Diversity. Pretty much, I agree, I just don't really have a problem with it. Different strokes for different folks. That is the future. History pretty much backs me up on this, it has been a gracial creep of change but it is a real evolution, I honestly suspect that the acceptance of diversity within the "pack" is what will save us because the ideas we need to survive will not be rejected only because of the person who expresses them. Just imagine the world we could have had if DaVinci's ideas had been acceptable to the masses at the time....we have a better chance of taking advantage of all the ideas imagined than at any other time in history. It will create new ideas that we don't have any way of imagining but increasing freedom always results in increasing imagination and ideas.

What I outline is not diversity at all, but a bifurcation of males.

I would only add Danni, that evolution and in that respect we, should not treat all ideas equally, they aren't, some ideas are better than others.

Unlike you Snoofy, I am open to ideas, yours too. But I won't subscribe to the ad hominem attacks. In fact I find it not surprising you can only throw mud from the the cheap seats.

For instance you say my understanding needs to "evolve", why do you think we should remain a single species as we are today? There are mating tendencies that are evolving as we speak, we are venturing somewhere the species has never gone before.

Where, in some large numbers, the female can provide for herself. No other time in the history of man has this occurred. It would be perfectly reasonable that some women don't want this, but would rather go to more traditional roles.

The attractiveness of a male for a given female will depend upon her perspective, and ability to acquire resources. Her tendency to chose mates with feminine features makes reasonable sense, testosterone in those males is lower.

But some females which choose to have a man help with provisioning while she raises the children will choose a man with more testosterone.

Unless you don't think women can evolve their ability to overcome their natural attraction mechanisms, and we are stuck with masculine only men.....

In that case whose view of evolution needs to "evolve"?

Also, designer babies will make "natural" humans fade away. In a hundred years, everybody will be born "perfect".

And then one dedicated young man will play the system and become one of the greatest astronauts to fly into space.

I saw that movie too.

#13 Dude, I have plonks that have been here on the DR longer than you have.

Danni, I think almost by definition, some "diversity" will be de-evolutionary. We're not talking about the evolution of ideas here..we're talking about making babies that possess some genetic mutation or recessive inherited trait that makes them better suited for survival in our future. Gay couples aren't going to make those babies without help from a laboratory, so homosexuality cannot be evolutionary: it's a genetic dead-end.

I posed the question with the following ideas in mind:

1. People are getting bigger. Not just taller, but fatter. Life spans, which were increasing, are expected to decrease with this new generation.
2. The technology of artificial implants and prosthetic devices is improving exponentially.
3. A computer just recently became the first to pass the Turing Test.
4. The global population is increasing rapidly, particularly in Asia and South America.
5. Globally, the more educated you are, the less kids you have. Less educated people don't pass the time playing chess...they bounce the mattress.
6. The earth is gradually warming, but is in what is known to be near the end of an interglacial period, and the interglacial periods are typically much shorter than the glacial periods. Will humanity evolve to thrive in the changing environments and if so, how?

Simple, people become pear shaped with noodle like arms and excessively enlarged eyeballs as they sit in an extra wide lazy boy recliner with toilet and fridge built in and their Google Glass on 24x7.

Honestly, first I've heard of or seen Wall-E. I never watch stuff like that nor go to the movies. My earlier post was what I imagined it may be like in the future.

I think it's telling that very few people foresee a great and glorious future filled with athletic, intelligent people living in a land of plenty. There's a reason dystopian stories sell or get made into movies. I read a great short story some time back called The March of the Morons, which I researched afterward. The basis is that instead of today's paradigm of the 1% reaping the benefits, the dystopian future is one where the 1% provides completely for the 99%, who are the result of stupid people having way more kids than smart people.

Sounds very socialistic Mustang. Our top 10% today is paying 71% of the taxes, we're almost there.

#22 March of the Morons is even worse. It's not just financial support, they run everything by putting smart people in key places and working like dogs to keep civilization from imploding. I remember one part where everyone is driving these fast jet cars, but you find out later that cars haven't been getting faster or more powerful, the smart people have just made them louder and changed the scale on the speedometers to make everyone else think they're getting faster and more powerful. Everyone is just too stupid to realize it.
