A man armed with explosives and an assault rifle might have entered a north Georgia courthouse Friday if not for a deputy who was wounded in the shootout with the gunman, Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper said. Authorities killed Dennis Marx outside the courthouse, Piper said, adding that the gunman planned to wreak more havoc once inside the building. "Marx's intention was to get in that front door and take hostages," he said. Marx was scheduled to attend a hearing at the Forsyth County Courthouse on Friday.

This could've been horrible. I'm very glad this deputy was on his toes.

Don't have to wait for a reload, or be in range for mace, when you have the ability to swiss cheese an unarmored vehicle instead. Over in 90 seconds.

Thank goodness.

All they needed to do was post a sign "No Guns Allowed" and he wouldn't have tried to enter. Add a background check and any gun he tried to pick up would slip out of his hands and be nulled.

"A man armed with explosives and an assault rifle"

Are we sure it was an "assault rifle"? If not the rest of the story doesn't matter as a debate that compares and contrasts and assault rifle with an equally lethal military style rifle.

The gun-nut conservatives members of Sovereign Citizens (like Cliven Bundy) maintain the belief that they are not subject to municipal, state and federal systems of law. Members consider the United States government illegitimate. Seven law enforcement officers have been killed by Citizen extremists since 2000, with additional people injured.

Sovereign Citizens conservative membership is believed to be about 100,000
