Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The bodies of 796 children between the ages of two days and nine years old have been found in a disused sewage tank in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. They died between 1925 and 1961 in a mother and baby home under the care of the Bon Secours nuns. Until the 1990s, Ireland incarcerated unmarried mothers and their children in state-funded, church-run institutions called mother and baby homes or Magdalene asylums, where they worked to atone for their sins. Their children were taken from them. Death rates for children in the Tuam home, and in similar institutions, were four to five times that of the general population.

Forget prayers. Only full disclosure by Ireland's Catholic church can begin to atone for the children who died in its care.

Father Fintan Monaghan, secretary of the Tuam archediocese, says: "I suppose we can't really judge the past from our point of view, from our lens. All we can do is mark it appropriately and make sure there is a suitable place here where people can come and remember the babies that died."

Let's not judge the past on our morals, then, but on the morals of the time. Was it OK, in mid-20th century Ireland, to throw the bodies of dead children into sewage tanks? Monaghan is really saying: "don't judge the past at all." But we must judge the past, because that is how we learn from it.

Author O'Toole points out:

For those of you unfamiliar with how, until the 1990s, Ireland dealt with unmarried mothers and their children, here it is: the women were incarcerated in state-funded, church-run institutions called mother and baby homes or Magdalene asylums, where they worked to atone for their sins. Their children were taken from them.

According to [Tuam historian Catherine] Corless [whose research led to the revelation of the mass grave], death rates for children in the Tuam mother and baby home, and in similar institutions, were four to five times that of the general population. A health board report from 1944 on the Tuam home describes emaciated, potbellied children, mentally unwell mothers and appalling overcrowding. But, as Corless points out, this was no different to other homes in Ireland. They all had the same mentality: that these women and children should be punished.

Ireland knows all this. We know about the abuse women and children suffered at the hands of the clergy, abuse funded by a theocratic Irish state. What we didn't know is that they threw dead children into unmarked mass graves. But we're inured to these revelations by now.

And it's not only at Tuam. "Since the news broke, Irish media have reported that at least three similar church-run facilities also have mass graveyards" (www.npr.org). In other words, it was systemic.

There are at least three more mass graves, located at former homes for unwed mothers in Bessborough, Castlepollard and Roscrea, according to RTÉ.

The Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary operated those now-defunct facilities.

I thought the nuns I had to deal with as a kid were lousy people. This is just horrific. Left to their own devices, I expect the local church officials to continue being horrible about this. The Pope should really get involved.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. It does not matter who or how lofty their possession is, the abuse of power is always a temptation, that few can constantly fend off.
This is pretty typical of the behavior of those with power with no scrutiny or over site. The Catholic Church has been victimizing the defenseless for over a thousand years, all in the name of Jesus.

"Always remember sand never forget libs/progs=CONTROL FREAKS"

Besides ridicule for liberalism, what other constructive criticism would you have for this?

So you are saying just forget about this?
Nah I dont think so.
by the way it was conservative attitude in Ireland that lead up to this happening. it was the shaming of unwed mothers and the feeling that they had to be hidden away along with their babies.
This was a awful failure of Ireland and my Church.
The horrible wounds of this, needs too revealed and so that both Ireland and the Church can learn and be healed, it must be known how far up in the Church that this was known to be happening.

she asked some good questions at the end of the article.

"tell us where the rest of the bodies are. There were homes throughout Ireland, outrageous child mortality rates in each. Were the Tuam Bon Secours sisters an anomalous, rebellious sect? Or were church practices much the same the country over? If so, how many died in each of these homes? What are their names? Where are their graves?"

People who are still around who were involved with this must be punished,
Yes the Church will suffer because of this but the airing out of the past can only make the Church a better Church.

Where who and what happened and why must be answered for the Good of Ireland and the good of the Church soul.

"The Catholic Church has been victimizing the defenseless for over a thousand years, all in the name of Jesus."

The Church is a secret society and as such has a public doctrine and one for the initiated, which are not all the priests but a select few. This atrocity has nothing to do with Jesus and in fact is attributable to his nemesis. This is evil. Below is an assertion that it is historically & currently systematic.

Walter Veith's 1.5 hr lecture on The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 2 parts:

Lets see who is this guy well he is a Seven-day Adventist

Lets see what he has to say about the Catholic Church

"What is the truth behind Islam? It is a secret creation of the Roman Catholic Church, invented by the Vatican and planted in the Middle East to stamp out the last remnants of non-Catholic "true" Christianity. "They are only playing the game of Hegelian idealism, thesis and antithesis," Veith explains with pseudo-philosophical profundity, "but behind the scenes they all belong to the same club."

The "club" -- a term Veith uses often in his lectures -- is interchangeably the Freemasons and the Catholic papacy. The extent of the Catholic Church's diabolical control of world events through the tireless plotting of its puppets, the secret societies, is truly astounding. The ranks of the Illuminati, secretly and tirelessly working in consort across the ages toward the goal of one world government controlled by Rome, includes: Karl Marx, Cecil Rhodes, Andrew Carnegie, Winston Churchill, J. Edgar Hoover, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, Shimon Peres, Yassir Arafat, both George Bushes, Ted Kennedy, Alan Greenspan (part of the Illuminati's "Committee of 300"), Hilary Clinton (a "6th Grand Dame," according to Veith), Jimmy Carter, Saddam Hussein, Richard Holbrooke (a "thirty-three degree Freemason"), Al Gore, Tony Blair, and Nelson Mandela
Veith does not discuss his sources for these fantastical claims. He simply declares at one point in this role call of the Illuminati's greatest hits that the information can be found "on a website" (the address is included at the bottom of one of his slides but it is in a font too small to make out from the video)."

i know that he is a brilliant biologist who believes in Young Earth. By brilliant i mean smarter than either of us. i'm so dumb i don't much comprehend 6 thousand years or 10 billion.

It is not contestable that there has been a vicious, bloody war between Protestants & Catholics. i have been tolerant of Catholic belief & think many modern folks are also, on both sides. Veith reveals documents which state that Catholic doctrine will in fact never be tolerant of or merciful towards heresy.

i was aware the Catholic Church incorporated pagan symbols, beliefs, deities & holidays to win converts; for example, elevating Mary to goddess status to placate those who worshiped a fertility goddess. Mariology reached a zenith with the conversion of Norsemen.

Veith supplies documents that there is more than incorporation going on, that the pagan gods are actually prominent in Catholic symbology, and the church actually sides with Lucifer as the inevitable victor of a spiritual war. This is inner, secret doctrine of the inner circle, not preached publically (according to Veith).

The Jesuits receive the greatest wrath, he believes they founded Freemasonry to have a Protestant secret society do the ideological work of the Catholic Church. Ceremony of Induction and Extreme Oath of the Jesuits:

"You have been taught to insidiously plant the seeds of jealousy and hatred between communities, provinces and states that were at peace, and incite them to deeds of blood, involving them in war with each other, and to create revolutions and civil wars in countries that were independent and prosperous, cultivating the arts and the sciences, and enjoying the blessings of peace. To take sides with the combatants and to act secretly in concert with your brother Jesuit, who might be engaged on the other side, but openly opposed to that with which you might be connected, ONLY that the Church might be the gainer in the end, in the conditions fixed in the treaties for peace and that the end justifies the means."
Ceremony of Induction and Extreme Oath of the Jesuits

Finally, i mentioned Veith's understanding, of which i have only recently become aware, in the context of these children's bodies being found, which is really inexplicable & truly horrific.
