Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

One way to curb mass shootings in America's schools would be for Congress to pass gun control legislation. But since that plan failed miserably, an enterprising father in Oklahoma is offering another solution -- equipping children with bulletproof blankets. The Bodyguard Blanket was developed by Steve Walker, a father of two elementary school students who was horrified by the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Connecticut, which left 20 children and six adults dead. In the fourteen months following Newtown, there were at least 44 school shootings. "We wanted our children to have a layer of protection immediately," Walker told NBC-afilliated Oklahoma news station, KFOR. They can be stored in the classroom, and, when seconds count, they can be easily applied."

It comes in both child and adult sizes and is designed to be bullet-proof, made from the same materials that US soldiers and law enforcement wear, the manufacturer's website claims. The manufacturers estimate that the blankets provide protection against "90% of all weapons that have been used in school shootings in the United States."

The blanket is intended to be strapped on a child's back like a backpack. When the child crouches in a ball and huddles up next to other children, they form a kind of human shield, like how the "Romans and the Greeks used to lock together," managing partner Stan Schone told KFOR. (The blanket is also being marketed towards schools that might want to protect students from tornado-induced flying debris.)

Before all the gun nuts sound off, take a look at this. Caution: it comes from the reality based universe and will not be believed by some people.

If they cost $1000 anyway mind as well just buy the kids guns. As we know any time someone without a gun was shot, it could have been prevented if he had a gun.

Wrong region for hillbillies. It's hipsters and new black panther party members, though they don't protest together.

#4 seriously?

Might as well post a Alex Jones article.

It is difficult to get through the first three paragraphs without bursting out in laughter. That stuff has been debunked for years before the "article" was even published.

Just more fodder to instill fear in the irrational hoplophobes.

They'd be better off shooting back. Watch the ballistics test. They have to use 38 super & goose shot to pass muster. Curling up on the ground with your sides completely exposed doesn't seem that wise either when the whole concern is somebody walking around executing stationary people. They're crazy, evil, but not stupid.

The problem with bullet prof materials it may protect one from the penetration of a round but it does little to stop the kinetic energy from the projectile. Imagine putting your hand under such a material and hitting it with a large hammer. Now see if any one has died from the injuries sustained from the impact of a bullet. People can get seriously injured from the impact, seen it- it ain't pretty.

Hell you might as well save money and room in your kids backpack. Go online and order a single 7.62 AP level 4 ceramic plate, it is the same our US military issues and slide that in their backpacks physical e yourself over 700 bucks. Also I would love to know a single gun law that could be added to the thousands already on the books who stop a nut job from commit mass murder.
