Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A new study suggests that people have gender-biased views of the names given to hurricanes and are more likely to fear -- and protect themselves from -- a Hurricane Ivan than a Hurricane Katrina. But underestimating a major hurricane just because it is named for a woman could be a deadly mistake. "The more feminine the name of a severe hurricane, the more deaths it causes," University of Illinois business professor Sharon Shavitt and her colleagues said in a study being released Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Hurricane scientists aren't blown away by the study's premise. "I'm dubious of any conclusions you can draw from the hurricane record because there are so many moving parts," said Bryan Norcross, senior hurricane specialist at The Weather Channel.

I don't think people would be as afraid of hurricane wilbur as they would be of hurricane hillary.

Darwinism,

Anyone in the U.S. that underestimates any Hurricane deserves to be culled from the herd.

They should name them after people in history.

Like...I'd like to see Hurricane Margaret Thatcher. Or maybe, Tropical Depression Sinead O'Conner. Typhoon Tony Danza.

It would make them more fun and approachable.

When I worked at a book store back in the late 90's, I had a woman who swore by the Farmers Almanac because it was 100% accurate in "predicting" the names of the hurricanes.

Didn't have the heart to tell her that the names are decided on the year before and they just pick the next name in the list.

Just don't name one 'Olga'. That one would scare the hell out of me. Who is afraid of 'Bob'?

Which means he probably has a degree in ------------- and is the one responsible for writing all the "This guy did WHAT?" or "You'll NEVER believe where THIS IS" or "Beautiful SUNNY WEATHER brings dangerous UV rays to..." headlines.
