Virgin Galactic has signed a deal with the Federal Aviation Authority to allow the company to charter SpaceShipTwo space flights from its base in New Mexico. The firm hopes to launch its first flight by the end of 2014. Virgin Galactic, co-owned by Richard Branson and Abu Dhabi's Aabar Investments, also has agreements with California to allow test flights.

This is so cool. We may have finally reached the tipping point where private industry can do what NASA does for cheaper. Then the free market takes over. The fact that America can put a man in space again doubles the excitement.

I've been waiting for this day and frankly, I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime.

NASA'S DEMs, DOQs, and landcover are essential to spatial analysis. USGS deserves some credit. NOAA does a good job for weather.

Thanks Gov't for my GIS data.

I think its great to put a man in space, but we are down here and that is what is important.

do what NASA does for cheaper.

I hope that the cheaper part does not come at the expense of training or quality.

Figures a couple of billionaires wasting our money on frivolous things. We know of much better things to spend that money on. Such a waste.

Except that it is their money.

My suspicion, some of the investments they made which made the billionaires would have been seen as "wasting" their money at the time.
