Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Edgar Hernandez didn't expect to learn that he was pre-diabetic at age 16. When his mother burst into tears at the doctor's office, it hit him hard. He was 370 pounds and couldn't stand to look at himself. It was tough being a fat kid, but things became unbearable in high school. Edgar was seeing a therapist for depression symptoms. He was frequently bullied in gym class. Kids would point at his "fat wobbling everywhere," especially as he struggled to keep up. "I tried my best to ignore it. But there were times when I just gave in and started crying," said Edgar, who lives in a suburb of St. Louis and is now 18. Everyone in his family had a weight problem; his parents developed type 2 diabetes in their forties. But Edgar was the biggest.

There is a lot of this going on these days. One of my daughters told me yesterday that both her and her boy friend have managed to drop over 20 lbs. each. They too quit eating out so much in spite of their hectic schedule, they started preparing their lunch and breakfast at home and taking it with them and it is really helping to cut down on the junk food and reduce their calorie intake.

Imagine that? Movement and eating less means less body fat!! OMG!! Who knew!!

There is too much focus on what we take in in this country. TV commercials advertising drinks to make sure you kid is getting enough vitamins an minerals. Heaven help us if a kid learns how to make a peanut butter sandwich (minus the jelly) and a piece of fruit before going "outside" to play.

Back in the stone age when I was a child we plated outside and most meals were simple. Houses were smaller then kitchens not so elaborate as they are now. Most of them were often purely functional with a table where everyone ate.

You slept and dressed in the bed room often sharing closet space with a sibling... or two... or three. Dressers had mirrors for make-up, bathrooms sinks were for shaving, brushing your teeth and washing your hands.

Everything crammed into a small space made being outside more desirable. Yards were large. When it rained the car was pulled out of the garage and the kids hung out there.

Now houses are HUGE on small lots fully appointed kitchens no one really uses except the microwave and dishwasher. Every one holes up in their own rooms playing outdoor fantasy games on the computer eating junk and drinking vitamin supplements.

It's part personal responsibility and part CORPORATE responsibility.

If you ate the same kind of things today as you did in the 70's you'd be consuming a lot more sugar than you were back then. Businesses have realized they can sell more product if they add POISON (sugar) to it.

Corporations put it in everything for that reason. Profit is more important than the health of their nation to them. Sugar is added to chicken now. CHICKEN! And you don't know this unless you pay a lot of attention, which most americans are too busy paying bills to do. They think that if they were raised on eating chicken that they can do the same with their kids, not realizing that today's chicken producers are not the same as they used to be.

Everything with sugar in it should get a health warning label. You should still be able to buy it, but corporations should not be able to keep you in the dark about what they're doing to you in the name of their profits.

Food companies want you to think you can get in shape with exercise so they help sell that narrative. But exercise is secondary. THe main way to lose weight is cutting out sugar.

But here in the United States of Corporations, we're all kept in the dark about this. Even Michelle Obama has been silenced about the sugar industry and now only talks about exercise.

I watched a GF drop a lot of weight through diet alone. After years of working out relentlessly, it was diet control that actually worked.

Nothing quite like the threat of death by 30 to motivate you.

childhood and teen years are the easiest years to lose weight. Its disgusting to see overweight children. their parents should be charged with criminal neglect.

I see parents feeding kids McDonalds and Starbucks everyday. Fat (FAT!) kids walking home from elementary school with their parents eating all kinds of chips and iced creams and candies and pork rinds. There are commercials for KFC where mothers are so ecstatic that they are feeding their whole family a bucket of salt and fat disguised as chicken.

It's ridiculous!!

People should be gaining weight in their 30s when our metabolisms start slowing down.

Get your fat kids away from the television and the junk foods and spend time with them outside.

Our society if doomed.

Another thing to remember is that once you get fat ONCE, your body considers that NORMAL, and it will always try to return to that state.

If you let your kids get fat, you are condemning them to an entire life of either being fat or having to constantly fight against it.

Conversely if you get in good shape when you're young, it will be easier to stay in good shape as you get older.

Feeding kids crap and making them fat is child abuse. Many parents just do it because they don't want to change their own gluttonous habits and how can you tell a kid not to drink coke when you're guzzling it down?

No, sorry. This is all Edgar's. I'm curious why you think that Obama's campaign has anything to do with this challenge he faced.

BTW, M. Obama is respected just as any other First Lady is respected.

Good for him. And I can't even seem to lose twenty pounds. It is all about will power. Or, in my case, the lack of it.

If a teenager can do it, why can't our fat oil rig worker Goatman?

Because the teenager has his whole life in front of him. Not so for the former rig worker.

Seems to me that Michelle Obama is disrespected more than any FL in my lifetime. I've never seen the level of vitriol she gets aimed at her. Well, Hillary maybe. But even people who hated GW at least respected Laura.

That is the price of visibility. The reason that barbara bush only got called 'The Silver *&^%$bag" by George Carlin is because she didn't say much.

Seth McFarland doesn't make jokes about Ms. Obama. GOP first ladies do not escape lefty commentary.
