Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A Connecticut couple claims that teachers at a public high school indoctrinated their three daughters into a religious cult that glorifies death. The family filed a lawsuit in a federal court Monday against Avon Public Schools, three Spanish teachers, a guidance counselor and Massachusetts' Wellesley College. In the lawsuit, filed under pseudonyms for the family, they claims that their intelligent, respectful daughters became cold, angry and obsessed with suicide after the school employees recruited them into the group. While enrolled in the teachers' Spanish classes, the girls and their classmates were taught about spirituality, numerology and astrology instead of the language.

Sounds like a baiting charge to me, but it sure sounds potentially interesting. Years ago I started a thread about a successful lawsuit against a school district where students were forced to Earth Day observances and told the earth was their mother and such. The parents claimed religious indoctrination and won.

And, of course, sacrificed pigeons during class time.

BS.

From the first line of the article:

A Connecticut family claims that three Spanish teachers and a guidance counselor at their daughters' high school indoctrinated the teens into a religious cult that celebrates death.
You need to read beyond the headline, zed. In this case, one sentence past the headline.

But I'll concede maybe these Spanish teachers were teaching Chinese

I'm tired of you creeping forward on one cylinder and demanding that other people treat you as having two.

You're on the ignore list past this point.

The cult which glorifies death? Could that be the cult which says that life is of real value until you die, when you will be taken to some cloud and sit with your harp and sing songs that will please some cult hero?

If you are a good cult member, that is.

Cause, you know what? I've heard a lot of stuff about that one.

They say that after you die, you will go to a better place. Glorifying death, right there.

Or you could be tortured for ever if you have been a poor cult member, or, you know, if you believe in a cult other than the one true cult.

That does kinda glorify death doesnt it.

Sounds like we're not getting the full story.

Of course, indoctrination is what we all do. : )

Seriously, this is might F'd up if true, and if the teaches did as accused, they should have their licenses revoked permanently, never mind criminal or civil charges as appropriate.

50 years ago my civics teacher taught his students to hate gay folks, including a prominent local artist-poet-author and college professor, who he outed to both his students and the community at large. My former teacher is still breathing .. unfortunately . Is it too late to file a lawsuit against him and the school for the indoctrination ? ?

"While enrolled in the teachers' Spanish classes, the girls and their classmates were taught about spirituality, numerology and astrology instead of the language."

When Jefferson wrote about separation of Church and state I think he had situations like this in mind.

I've heard of this cult where you eat the flesh and drink the blood of its leader. Sounds like worshiping death to me.

So the girls are Catholic, what's the problem? Actually they really never said what the "cult" was. The girls are over 18 so this lawsuit sounds dead on arrival.

Read the suit or just the article.

If it is wrong for a Jesus freak, it is wrong for the pagan or the Muslim or the Hindu or the Jew or the whatever... Kids are supposed to be taught how to think, not what to think in college. Bet the course that teach one how to think are dominated by intolerant and narrow minded academics who live on a higher plain of existence than we mere mortals.

My sympathy, Goatman. I know exactly how bad you feel right now as on another thread someone expressed his total contempt for me.
How can we work at being accepted by snide people, Goatman? Our sense of loss is beyond words.

the article speaks for itself a frivolous lawsuit that the state probably refused to take and why it was filed in a Federal court.
The lawyer filing the lawsuit on behalf of his clients so happens to be a tax lawyer. Which what little I saw he has never handled a lawsuit.

the[sic] article speaks for itself a frivolous lawsuit...

What facts or supporting legal argument is missing?

...that the state probably refused to take...

Court clerks have no discretion to refuse any suit presented for filing.

...and why it was filed in a Federal court.

See, federal question.

When my kids came home after their first semester of college, they were suddenly cynical and distant. Now it's way past ten years later, they're both married, have real jobs, and shower me and the missus with praise, gifts, and respect.

Also, learning any language requires one to learn about the culture in which natives speak the language. In my 2nd year Latin classes, we studied Caesar's story of the subjugation of Europe, i.e., "Gaul, as a whole, is divided into three parts. . .." The Day of the Dead is a part of Mexican and Latino culture. It is no wonder foreigners think Americans are generally uncultured louts. We, as a rule, are just that.
