The first patient in the U.S. to suffer from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) was released from an Indiana hospital Friday. "The patient has tested negative for MERS, is no longer symptomatic and poses no threat to the community," said Dr. Alan Kumar of Community Hospital in Munster. MERS, first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia, causes severe acute respiratory illness and has killed 30% of the people who contracted it. The Chicago Tribune reports that all cases so far have been linked to six countries around the Arabian Peninsula.
