A reenactment of a Black Mass celebrating Satan is scheduled to take place at Harvard University on Monday evening. It has outraged the Catholic Church, but the group holding the event says it's educational. The Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club is hosting the Satanic Temple from New York. The Black Mass is scheduled for Monday night in the basement of Memorial Hall. "It's kind of troubling especially to Christians, but at the same time if they're doing it for academic inquiry, this should be a safe place," said student Misan Oteri.

History, origin, and context of the Black Mass will be explored for educational purposes. I would hope Harvard would support any racists' rally or demonstration -- especially for educational purposes. It offers a good reminder why we shouldn't placate to such thought processes and ostracizes those that participate with sincerity (as opposed to a student participating for solely the experience and educational factor).

Why should we be afraid of such demonstrations? Some would compare this to the reenactment of public flogging of gays or the lynching of a slave. Disgusting hyperbole if you ask me. No one is being harmed in this demonstration. And what people choose to do with their "souls" is totally up to them, so back off you evangelistic, sanctimonious hypocrites!

Freedom of religion is basic.

Freedom of intellectual pursuit is necessary.

When studying at the Post Grad level(or undergrad, for that matter) this a valid educational process.

I have a friend who has received his PHD in World Religion Studies. They look at everything. Including Satanism.

Feel free to refuse to attend.

Dont object that other folks are studying more deeply than you are comfortable with.

It probably wont be on any test you will be taking.

Pretty simple concept.

Those that actually believe in the existence of Satan, his abilities, and his "evil" intent take offense at the notion that an academic university would even consider dabbling in this sort of educational process. They honestly believe that by reenacting or participating in a Black Mass opens their souls up to Satan's influence, posing a real threat to everyone who subsequently comes into contact with those individuals. I believe that is why they feel it necessary to compare this to a public lynching or public torture. To them, there is the potential for real, physiological harm in conducting a Black Mass. If you're not Catholic or don't believe in Hell, you really don't have much to worry about.

They should hold the satanist black mass before every town hall meeting.

Anything that upsets the more-catholic-than-the-pope crowd is good.

I would totally watch a black mass. I didn't think there really was such a thing outside the realm of horror movies and bored teenagers.

Are we actually being asked to believe that Harvard is so broke it can't live stream the event from somewhere other than the campus?

Something sinister is afoot.

And a Satanic Mass has about as much cultural value as dog crap has nutritional value.

Consume enough of either and the result is the same.

It's a Harvard club, not the university itself.

From the description:

It's on campus, therefor sanctioned by Harvard. Hence, the headline is correct.

Same could be said for a Catholic mass, IMO. Perspective is anything, eh Christian?

Yeah, a Catholic mass doesn't have men dressed in robes burning incense, symbolically eating flesh and drinking blood, and spouting a lot of mumbo-jumbo.

And St. Marks and our Lady of Perpetual Tears is hosting the pope.

Is there a story here?

NULLIFIDIAN if you're not bright enough to see the difference between Catholicism and Satanism do yourself a favor and don't attempt to conflate them.

You'll only embarrass yourself.

If you're unable to acknowledge the parallels between a Satanic mass and a Catholic mass, you've never been to a Catholic or Satanic mass.

Ok, instruct me. Men wearing dresses conducting strange, supernatural ceremonies. Incense and peppermints. Symbolic sacrifice. Reciting of chants, prayers and obscure languages? What's the difference?

Not my point. Tor asked why HARVARD couldn't Skype in the Black Mass (sweet gods of technology be praised). I pointed out that HARVARD wasn't actually putting it on, so they probably have rules about clubs accessing HARVARD'S technology.

Bad as it sounds it's best he died when he did.

But since we're on the subject the link between satanism and scientology it's worth pointing out that WICCA was founded by a dirty old fraud who was a member of the same group that spawned the other two parody religions.

This was all pretty interesting. Didn't know about Parsons. Not surprised about Hubbard.

Link to Antichrist made the common transmogrification between it and The Beast. (Antichrist is merely one who is skeptical of the divinity of Jesus and his authority to dispense universal forgiveness via his crucifixion.) It claimed the Antichrist would be known by the Mark of the Beast which is also incorrect; that "mark" being necessary for people to interface with the society ushered in by the Beast (buying food, etc.). (Compare to the Mark of Cain, which allowed him to interface with society--the existence of which is not explained as Cain was only the 3rd human being on Earth.)

#41 ~ that is correct; you are an Antichrist. Several steps up from being a Satanist or Scientologist i'd wager ( in the Xian hierarchy, as your conversion is more possible if remotely so ). i had only heard of Hubbard's connection to the eliminati (exact same thing as Satanism).
