Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Ed Kilgore: If you read two posts by Slate's Dave Weigel this week about the establishment of the Select Committee on Benghazi, the potential significance of this move and how it's being handled by John Boehner becomes pretty clear. This isn't just a move to provide daily porn for wingnuts, or even to take down Hillary Clinton's approval ratings a few points, but a conscious step towards impeaching Barack Obama. ... Weigel goes on to pull together a number of quotes from Republican pols and conservative media figures that don't so much raise the possibility of impeachment as take it as a given and ponder how it can be handled without "looking crazy."

But there's one aspect of the Benghazi! campaign that I know for a fact reflects derangement, and it's expressed in the headline and subheadline of a Daily Beast column today by Ron Christie: "Why Democrats Are So Scared of Benghazi: They insist we don't need another committee to investigate the attack -- but they're really afraid of the incompetence the truth will reveal."

When people in politics say stuff like this -- my opponents are making light of this issue because it secretly terrifies them -- -I figure some serious self-deception is at hand. And that could be the case here. If Democrats are huddled quietly in the bars and opium dens where they conspire against America, confiding their fear of Benghazi! as the Rosetta Stone to all their nefarious schemes, I sure haven't heard about it. Sometimes when people laugh at you it's because they think you're being funny.

So my dear conservative friends: do what you feel you must on Benghazi!, but please stop writing this crap about Democrats or liberals "fearing" that you will go further down this particular rabbit hole. (all emphasis his) www.washingtonmonthly.com

The Benghazi consulate and annex were joined as a CIA operation which is one of the main reasons certain information has been withheld from the public although this is now widely known. One can better understand what happened by understanding that intelligence personnel operating under diplomatic cover are not the same as simple State Department personnel. Every question has been answered to the best of this nation's knowledge and the heroes who lost their lives have been buried and mourned. There was no cover-up surrounding the events of Benghazi, there was merely the protection of sources and in not divulging specifics about our own knowledge of the attackers motivations and tactics that fated night-into-morning.

On Saturday night, as Washington's press corps was distracted by a surge of celebrity selfie opportunities, it was missing a kind of milestone. Jeanine Pirro, a former New York Republican star who tumbled out of politics and onto Fox News, was calling for the impeachment of President Obama over "a story no one wants to talk about."

The story was the 2012 attack on the American consulate in Benghazi. Referring to that, on Fox, as "a story no one wants to talk about" sounded a bit like CNN asking where all the Flight 370 coverage had been. Not Pirro's point -- she was saying that the media failed to see where the Benghazi story was going to lead. Hint: Impeachment.

"We have impeached a president for lying about sex with an intern," she said. "A president resigned in the face of certain impeachment for covering up a burglary. Why wouldn't we impeach this president for not protecting and defending Americans in the bloodbath known as Benghazi?" Pirro then addressed the president directly -- though at this point in the evening he was giving a sardonic dinner speech -- with a warning that "your dereliction of duty as commander-in-chief demands your impeachment."

Just one segment on a slow news night, but there was a sense of inevitability about it, of the Overton Window being shifted by hand.

Where was all this effort by Republicans to hold a Republican Administration accountable over 9/11 when 3,000 Americans were killed?

Today's Republicans Suck.

Eisenhower would be Freaking EMBARRASSED.

Glad I stopped voting for Republicans 10 years ago.

Oh this is nothing more than election year posturing, wasting money the US doesn't have, to buy votes.

Bravo GOP.

Didn't the Republicans learn anything with the Clinton impeachment. John Boehner call Newt Gingrich and ask him how that fiasco turned out. And hey, Nancy Pelosi, when you said "impeachment is off the table" you lost the respect of many Democrats and other Americans. If ever there was a case for impeachment that was it. Benghazi hardly matters in comparison to the crimes committed by Bush/Cheney.

Didn't the Republicans learn anything with the Clinton impeachment.

Yes. They learned that the constant bashing of their opponent energized and motivated their base with the freshest of red meat regardless if it harmed their elective chances in the short term.

There is no doubt that this new committee is about setting the tone, establishing the "evidence", and interjecting the vocabulary of "high crimes and misdemeanors" into the fever swamp of GOP delusions over the criminal behavior of the Obama Administration and the President himself. The Democrats better not try to ignore this committee, they need to be front and center calling witnesses who will dispute and negate whatever tripe the GOP "prosecutor" plans to introduce into the public's consciousness. Properly conducted, this committee has the chance to once and for all put to bed the ridiculousness of trying to second guess the simple operation of the same bureaucracy that provided the public messaging for every President during times of crisis whenever there is the continued re-evaluation of trying to discern what actually happened and why.

It is completely abominable that knowing-politicians are using an unfortunate attack on a CIA operation (under State Department cover) to try and impugn both the President and his SecState when CIA security is their own responsibility due to the very nature of their operations. Dissecting the events of Benghazi is creating a public spectacle for critiquing the methods and tactics that our clandestine personnel use and survive under for the purpose of finding criminal culpability of the President.

I think this is less about impeachment and more about gaining further congressional control in November. It's a pretty weak case for impeachment. But it plays well to getting the conservative base out to vote.

"look crazy" . . . ?

LOL ~ I thought that was already a given. What is this now ~ the 8th investigation?

It sounds more like a 'Hail Mary' as the Repubs brace for getting steamrolled (again!) in 2016.

If we give the Republicans the Senate and the House they will impeach. Impeachment is a political weapon, especially in the hands of today's Republicans, no high crimes of misdemeanors are really required and they hate Barrack Obama. Every Democrat, every independent should take note and vote in November or else witness the impeachment of our first black President and then endure the environment that follows, it won't be pretty.

If it is fascism when Obama does it then Bush also deserves a trip. And most of the Wall St. gang too.

Bush-speak for America...what, did you fall off the oil rig and land on your head?

No, no falling off of rigs. Nor did I ever hear Bush say "merka" instead of "America". Do you have a link for that? And even if he did, why do you lower yourself to that low of a level to emulate him? Low self esteem?

The Democrat cowards in Congress could have easily impeached "Mr Hollywood" Ronald Reagan over the "Iran-Contra" scandal. The fact is that selling some of our most sophisticated weapons to Iran was a felony. The right-wing conservative Contras murdered and tortured a million innocent men women and children ... Thanks to Reagan

While I would agree with you, that to emulate Bush, I would have to go pretty low, so thank you for agreeing with me on that post.

as far as his diction...i was poking fun of his accent.

Because without proof, it's simply opinion.

Sorry. I guess I spent too much time on the debate team where proof of what one says is important and essential to being believed.

So, OK. I accept that your assertion that Bush said "merka" instead of "America" is simply your opinion, and not fact.

None the less, I'd pick someone other than the loser Bush to emulate. Just a suggestion.

It depends on damage done.

I got $4,000 for biting into a bone in a hamburger on the rig that split a molar. Plus they fixed the tooth, of course. My second hitch offshore I got an injury that required 9 stitches. I got $8,500 for that one. They are quick to pay off an injury to avoid a potential lawsuit. As if I would sue over a bone in my burger. But I took the money anyway
