Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The effort to remake the intelligence relationship between the United States and Germany after it was disclosed last year that the National Security Agency was tapping Chancellor Angela Merkel's cellphone has collapsed, according to German officials, who say there will be no broad intelligence sharing or "no-spy" agreement between the two countries when Chancellor Merkel arrives at the White House on May 2.

We often discuss non-eventful issues/stories with gusto and then miss something that ultimately represents a defining moment. As we can tell from the NSA spying, other nations are not happy. If Snowden did damage to our intelligence industry, this in itself is a huge revelation. The hegemony of the U.S. threatens the world through its' spying, intelligence gathering, military adventures, and financial escapades. That hegemony is slowly being attacked by a world no longer intimidated by a perceived crumbling empire.

Can't blame Merckel. I'd still be holding a grudge, too. Friends don't spy on friends.

Merckel. Gotta tell one of my favorite jokes.

Angela Merckel makes a trip to France and is going through immigration

Immigration officer: Name?
Angela Merckel: Angela Merckel
IO: Nationality?
AM: German.
IO: Occupation?
AM: No, I'm just here for a few days.

I have posted this before, but the young have little thirst for history.
Merkel is trying to gain the final step in 'acceptance' post WWII.

Is that the same world that has done much worse economically since the 2008 crash than the U.S.? I'm not seeing this "crumbling" empire you are seeing. Maybe it's something we should fix by electing a Republican president.

"I'm not seeing this "crumbling" empire you are seeing"

There's plenty of evidence of a crumbling empire. Increasingly the world is ignoring U.S. ultimatums and arm-twisting. The empire is breathing fumes and printing money to stave off another collapse. When the rest of the world refuses to loan to the U.S. and disses the dollar, the writing is on the wall.

-the writing is on the wall.

How biblical, lmao.

Of course, "optimistic nihilist" would be an oxymoron.

How could anyone reach an agreement on spying? That takes all the fun out of it.

Rcade, you obviously aren't reading alternative news sources----it doesn't surprise me that your feeding is from the MSM that doesn't report news other then that fed from their government leaders. Now, let's figure out why the U.S. has done better then other parts of the world----first of all, it's because they can print money irresponsibly. Why do you think Europe is in trouble---partly because we've helped place them there. Sure, we have the reserve currency but that will end eventually since the world now realizes it allows the U.S. to foment destabilization along with bribe and blackmail nations. It also corrupts and put the whole European community at risk due to the cross dependency of the banking system. We have debts now over $17.5 trillion along with a debt/gdp ratio of over 107%. The only thing bailing us out is the ability of unlimited printing of money. Gold is flowing from West to East and wallstreet and our government are totally corrupt. The BRICS are moving as fast as they can to trade through bartering, their own currencies, or gold, thus cutting the dollar out of their trade. Washington sees the handwriting on the wall and are trying to counteract other nations' move to move away from the petrodollar as well. There are so many holes in the ---- they don't know what to plug any longer. They're trying to hold more spinning plates up without them falling that they are starting to act out of desperation. Why do you think they destabilized Libya, Egypt and Now Ukraine. A currency crisis is on the horizon and other nations are giving us the back of their hands more then ever. Our middle class is deteriorating and more people are sinking into poverty. When inflation takes hold, the people will respond. Existing home and new home sales are reversing again and heading south. Home ownership is at a level we haven't seen in years. Washington continues to be controlled by the ruling elite and neocons.

You must live in a dream world---and no; electing a republican POTUS isn't going to make a difference any longer.

1. I read that if Merkel had an encrypted phone like Obama and most top Government officials around the world (even from poor countries) the USA would not be able to tap her phones, is this a fact techies ? ?

2 When Merkel learned we taped her phones SHE SHOULD HAVE JUST SHUT HER YAP and said nothing. So now when Obama meets with Merkel in May he should demand that Germany re-pay the USA for the trillions of dollars spent fighting WW1 and WW-2. Also Germany should compensate the families of all our soldiers killed or injured in both wars, that should teach her to shut-up, next time

All encryption is ultimately able to be decrypted. It's known the NSA is able to decrypt most of the internet.

Within 10 years, 20 tops there will be an all out world wide revolt. I don't see any good reason at this point for the world populace to continue to sell off its resources for American monopoly money. And it is only a matter of time until the situation degrades to the point where the whole planet dumps their viceroys all at once.
