Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Rod Dreher, The American Conservative: Man, the 12 minute speech Sarah Palin gave to the NRA convention is awful. It's just witless, red-meat blathering, delivered in that nasal whine of hers that makes it sound like she's chewing wads of tinfoil. ... Fast-forward in the video to the 6:30 mark, though, and listen to what she says about terrorists. It's part of a long harangue about lily-livered liberals, delivered in such a way that makes Archie Bunker sound like Cicero. Money quote: "Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."

OK, stop. Not only is this woman, putatively a Christian, praising torture, but she is comparing it to a holy sacrament of the Christian faith. It's disgusting -- but even more disgusting, those NRA members, many of whom are no doubt Christians, cheered wildly for her.

"Cuz that's how we should spread democracy and the Lord's good word in one fell swoop: through waterboarding." -- Looney Tunes Palin at it Again

Waterboarding terrorists creates more terrorism. Baptizing terrorists creates more terrorism. If Palin were in charge, we would have more terrorism. I think she's trying to tell us something about how she thinks America should be.

I was convinced that water boarding, because many of our military is subjected to it in their training, wasn't that bad.

Christopher Hitchens convinced me otherwise.

The fact that it is in the category of " mock execution" should win the day. It did with me.

Ummmmm not being dumb enough to play into the turrerist's hands by using religious language to describe the conflict (remember Bush's "crusade" debacle?) isn't tip toeing around "terrorist sensibilities". It's not being a ham handed buffoon.

And THAT is why I'd STILL vote for her.

And don't bother with the "but Obama does" drivel. It'll only show that you're not only stupid, but too stupid to understand that you're stupid.

#25 | Posted by jpw at 2014-04-28 11:28 PM | Reply | Flag:

For an office like the presidency, Being sensible is far far more important than ivy league brilliant intellect. Presidents Wilson and Obama are two EXTREMELY similar ivy league types that prove the point.

Sensible is also utterly incompatible with political correctness, an added benefit. Makes it easy to see who does not qualify by just listening for the PC illness to show up their public statements.

#26 | Posted by USAF242 at 2014-04-28 11:40 PM | Reply | Flag:

I'm sorry, but to me your post sounds more like justifying why someone of your mental stature is fit for the office of POTUS than an actually well thought out opinion. Here's why.

A. Common sense is quite commonly wrong. There's a reason the scientific method was developed.

B. Making decisions at that level requires the integration of information and data from all over the spectrum. Brilliant intellect is most certainly a plus when dealing in complex situations. Being brilliant with good sense (often called wise) is even better. Palin is most certainly not in possession of both. I'd argue she's not in possession of either, which brings me to

C. It would not be sensible to intentionally walk straight into the bear trap your adversaries placed right out in the open a long time ago. That is what's commonly known as "stupid", or "retarded" if one wants to get into the real technical jargon. It's a foolish statement to say "sensible is utterly incompatible with political correctness" because one can most certainly avoid being politically incorrect without being politically correct. That's what's called "diplomatic", and that is a trait that is a must in a POTUS.

Yeah well we all know how all the torture of captives brought us to decisive victories in Iraq and Afghanistan. Oh yeah and helped us find bin Laden... 10 years later. Whoohooo!

Yes... it is very clear to us that in your little microcephalic world people who have lived under the tyranny of a government who controlled them through threat of torture are motivated by torturing them. It never occurs to dumb @$$&$ like Paloonietunze and the rest of you tough talkers those who you torture were ready for it. I guess you must think your brand of torture was superior to Saddam Hussiens.

The edgy creativity of your methodology goes right up there with sending military personnel propped up on prozac until you were sending them home with concussive brain injuries. Nothing like the celebration of losing strategy to make dim wits feel good about themselves.

Hey but why not.... its all you have.

So really its all about pain. Someone has got to hurt and you don't give a flying frappe who.. as long as someone suffers and you get to feel good about it.

This is a perfect summation of why the right wing is becoming so marginalized. You flock to populist charlatans who have nothing to offer the country but rabid, provocative stupidity. As long as somebody grabs the mic and hits all the right enemies with over-the-top verbal aggression, you give that huckster your money and your support.

Then you lose another election and ask yourself "what went wrong?"

I can tell you exactly what went wrong. You did.

Thank you for forgetting how to win elections. I hope you never learn.

Conservatives give considerably more per capita (by that I mean as a ratio of giving to income) than liberals. Even when donations to religious organizations are stripped away, conservatives STILL give a bit more to charity than do liberals.

Conservatives also donate more of their time to charity than liberals.

This is well documented in a book where the author was hoping to prove the exact opposite - that liberals were more charitable.

#42 | Posted by JeffJ at 2014-04-29 12:19 PM | Reply | Flag:

This isn't to say that conservatives care more.

I think this is a product of political ideology. Liberals believe in a strong central government with a large safety net. With that in place they don't see as much of a need for private charity.

Yes, I know I am broad-brushing here.

I can certainly appreciate your sentiments. And I gave you your much deserved NW flag.

But, I actually hope they do learn.

For the sake of the future of our Nation, our Posterity and our World.

I hope they truly learn someday.

Because We need a well informed oppositional Party with good ideas on how to unite this country and how to move this country forward in order to live the ideals as set forth and begun by our Founding Fathers and our Founding Documents.

And to help us all Progress as a People and to a move toward that more Perfect Union in our hearts we all seek we will need to turn our Ideological Enemies into our Ideological Friends.

And THAT is how hopelessly Liberal I am.

I have never seen a study that shows conservatives give more to liberals when you take out church giving.

Giving to your church isn't always charity, so it's nothing to crow about. Often it just helps enrich the power, influence and size of the church.

I'm surprised the NRA didn't complain about there being no guns involved.
