Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, April 26, 2014

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been caught on audio making racist comments to his girlfriend V. Stiviano, the gossip site TMZ revealed. Sterling, angered by a photo of his girlfriend and Magic Johnson on Instagram, said to Stiviano, "You can sleep with them (black people). You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games." He added, "I'm just saying, in your lousy ------- Instagrams, you don't have to have yourself with, walking with black people."

Quite a week for racism.

I'm already starting to see people defend the Unfrozen Caveman Racist NBA Owner Donald Sterling with the, "He's not racist! His girlfriend is black and Mexican!" line of "reasoning."

I heard this BS said to defend Lou Dobbs (Latino wife) and John Derbyshire (Asian wife)

Does anyone but me feel like that's EXTRA creepy?

The "reasonable" white guy generalizing and debasing a race of people based on anecdotal evidence or cherry-picked statistics, who gets a pass because they've selected a minority they've deemed okay to sleep with?

By that reasoning, every slave owner who ever raped one of his slaves was as egalitarian as MLK.

Sterling is already suing her for $1.8m for embezzlement. This, apparently, is her revenge. She appears to have taped this illegally (without consent) and may be holding more tapes in reserve to fend off retribution. This first attack, though, is so effective that she's probably going to get a lot of retribution from Sterling, regardless.

It doesn't take much to get the misogyny started here. This woman does nothing wrong in the recording and none of Sterling's complaints about her make any sense, but there's comment after comment here using offensive language attacking her.

Who cares if she's with him because he's rich? Happens all the time. It's a bit sad and pathetic, but hardly something to be outraged about.

The issue here is an NBA owner who hates black people so much that his girlfriend being seen with one on her Instagram makes him crazy. He should be drummed out of the league for this incident and others in the past. It tarnishes the NBA to have him in it.

Seems also she purposely antagonized him in order to record him.

Or somebody else recorded it. Sterling has an estranged wife suing this woman. She could've gotten someone working in the house to record it and embarrass her husband and his girlfriend.

Sterling's continued presence in the NBA makes me think the other owners have little to no recourse to get rid of an owner. The guy paid millions to settle allegations of racist housing practices against blacks and Hispanics. That should have been more than enough to get him out, if such a thing was possible.

SI claims, "There is reportedly no language authorizing the NBA to sell a team because of an owner's hurtful remarks or embarrassing behavior."

The league has probably decided that it's better to let time solve the problem for them. Sterling is 80.

If they were married she would have leverage, since its only GF the tape would be leverage. But I don't get a sense when listening to this who she is.

RCade makes a point that she never loses her cool, but then postulates someone else recorded it. Given her calmness, I am going to to say, the initial dialog, and such they have had this discussion before and it was heated, and she recorded this one, thus the reason for keeping her cool. Again if she can select the tape to give out, it is obviously would show her in the best possible light, in her opinion.

Just for the Enquirer newspaper sales...are there more tapes?

Could the levy a fine against the owner? Other than that why would the NBA go on record saying its investigating the situation? It would seem to me this would be something that the public thinks one thing and the league can't do anything about it.

Making the NBA owners appear tarnished for lack of a better word......

This is absurd. Republicans are just as capable of being closet bigots as Democrats. The stuff that's out in the open from the GOP is when their specific positions or statements are perceived as racist, which is a different situation than when someone is caught being racist in their personal conduct, like Sterling.

Obama responds to racist comments attributed to Clippers' Don Sterling

The racism controversy embroiling Don Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has reached half way around the world to Malaysia, where President Obama is on a diplomatic mission to Asia Pacific nations.

At a press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Sunday, Obama was asked about racist comments Sterling allegedly made about African-Americans.

"When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That's what happened here," the President said.

Obama also said Sterling's alleged comments are an example of how "the United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation."

"That's still there, the vestiges of discrimination. We've made enormous strides, but you're going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," Obama said in Malaysia.

Sterling is just more evidence that affirmative action has not yet outlived it's usefulness.

This whole thing is another tempest in a teapot. Who cares? Maybe folks ought to go back to when someone cheats on their spouses and care about that----Donald Sterling should be criticized for that maybe. How about that low life girl friend he has who gets him to lavish gifts and then broadcasts it and doesn't have the self respect not to screw an old man who is still married----what a fine human being she is. And then you have Magic Johnson critical of Sterling's comments----maybe he should have been critical of his lack of self control with multiple women in the past. The point is you're looking at people that don't give a d_____ about anyone but themselves and don't know what it is to have an absolute set of values that determine how they should live and set examples in a rapidly declining valueless culture. And the NBA fits very nicely in that culture.

This story will get some news time, as it should, but not as persistently or vigorously as statement by someone like Cliven Bundy.

The number of stories, length of stories, persistency of stories, and focus of stories will be more intense on a conservative target.

more from Cynthia McKinney

Yesterday at 8:27am · Edited OK, so the same "news" outlets that are trying to convince us that Cliven Bundy is a racist are the same outfit that refuse to report on [...] and other racial epithets used by Hollywood execs to describe their own clients. Leonard Rowe had a hearing on Wednesday and the U.S. government refused to take the prosecutor's table and, instead, announced from the back of the room that they had no interest in prosecuting the case. So, if the U.S. government isn't prosecuting Leonard Rowe, please tell me who is?? Why is he still in prison? The judge announced from the bench that Georgia Federal Courts don't have jurisdiction over the matter. And the NY Judge Patterson said that he was not going to arrest or detain Mr. Rowe. Do the Hollywood execs have that much control over the administration of justice in this country? I'll give my take on the Cliven matter as soon as I've had a chance to read them--I was traveling yesterday and I've been buried in catch-up school work all day today. Meanwhile, how does President Emanuel sound to you? CNN wants you to be sure to consider Rahm for President while Chicago voters will be sure to send him back as Mayor after "Chicagoland" good press. Amazing, considering Rahm's brother is one of the head Hollywood execs that could call off the dogs and get Rowe out of prison, but instead is remaining silent; I'm just comparing American Blackout, the documentary about me, that won all kinds of awards, but went nowhere in Hollywood while Chicagoland goes up town and prime time on your dime!!! Things that make you go Hmmm.

Emails show Emanuel aides, producers coordinated CNN 'Chicagoland' scenes

If it seemed as though some scenes of CNN's documentary series "Chicagoland" were coordinated by Mayor Rahm Emanuel 's City Hall and the show's producers, that's because they were.

Really? You can't tell he was drunk? He sounded potted to me. And he asked her to drop it, over and over.

As that one comedian said about being drunk and arrested, he had the right to remain silent, but not the ability.

Is there a good way to explain "some of my old white friends are racist and it puts me in a difficult position when they see my girlfriend with black guys?" That's what it seemed like he was trying to convey.

I sort of feel bad for this guy being rail-roaded.

It's one thing to make a public statement that is offensive and receive backlash (Todd Aiken, Cliven Bundy, Joe Bide...well, he always gets a pass for some reason). It's quite another to have a private conversation be recorded without knowledge and then have said conversation leaked to the media.

#106 | Posted by JeffJ at 2014-04-28 10:19 AM | Reply | Flag: | Newsworthy 1

It's one thing to debate the ethics of recording someone without their knowledge and I think it is wrong to do it unless you have a court order (it's illegal in Florida) and that issue probably would give Mr. Sterling some legal recourse if he so chooses.
That said, he is still a racist scum bag. Nothing will ever change that and his players, the fans, his own coach all know it. He should sell the team and just go away and not open his racist mouth ever again.

These new statements are elementary compared to ones he's made before.

In 2003 he was sued for racial discrimination by 19 tenants and the Housing Rights Center. The lawsuit stated that he did not want to rent to Latinos or African Americans because, "Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building," and "black tenants smell and attract vermin."

He was also sued by former Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor, who according to the New York Times declared that Sterling embraced a "vision of a Southern plantation-type structure" for the franchise. Sterling, however, won that suit.

The guy is a nutjob. The NBA needs to do to him what MLB did to Marge Schott.

okay....but the least we deserve is to know the whole story and for the most part the whole story is NOT BEING told..

for instance, any of you know that magic johnson is now involved???

he knows the half white girlfriend....was he the one who got her to tape it ?? then to give it to t whatever.
AND GUESS WHO IS TALKING About buying the team at a discount price I"m sure...
MAGIC JOHNSON !!! well gee what a coincidence...now is all that the whole truth...how would we know..most of all we get is the official pc let's protest by wearing black socks crowd...

is he innocent of housing descrimination from the past...don't know, but we certainly wouldn't know if he wasn't....

he's old and gonna die...but that makes NO DIFFERENCE in one very SIMPLY request that we should all have..if any of us are evenly remotely interested...the media and others have a DUTY To give us the entire story.,...otherwise .>SHUT UP !!!!!!!!!!!!

it's not irrelevant in the slightest....IF magic is involved as the possibility is greater NOW that we KNOW HE KNEW her....he's using your outrage to make MILLIONS by buying this team at Im sure a cut rate price..and that doesn't bother you at all??/ THATS pathetic...

if you were telling the truth in your last line, I would be telling you that magic the RICH man with more secrets than you know....I might add...should be able to pick up the team and make MILLIONS off of his shady dealings,....which by the way is NOT that unusual...

and notice how the main point of mine was to know the whole story and your point was to saw you did NOT want to know the whole story...and THAT"S pathetic as well.

and it's so typical that FINALLY ...from an alternative source NATURALLY that the name of the prospective buyer shows up as KNOWING the half black girlfriend who this man told COULD cheat on him but to do it discretely..

and that simply doesn't matter at all to you...as in MAYBE....somethings were lIED About so this RICH MAN can make MORE MONEY.....

Donald Sterling is going to be forced to sell his team by the owners because his open bigotry is bad for business. The NBA is a global brand led by an 80% black workforce. It's fans come in all shapes and sizes and this is why advertisers flock to them to sell their own products and services. Modern-day corporations KNOW that OPEN bigotry and prejudice espoused by executives or ownership can offset millions of dollars spent on advertising or CAUSE them to spend copious amounts of money undoing the damage wrought by ignorant utterances or feelings made public by the same people.

Donald Sterling will be forced to accept over $1 billion for his franchise in the coming weeks (or he will be divested of control and his family will take over the reins ala the DeBartolo family and the 49ers). The NBA will sign their next tv rights deal in 2015 and it's estimated to be 5 TIMES greater than the current deal. This is one of the reasons the owners played such hardball with the players in their last negotiations. Revenues are about to explode and player salaries skyrocket again, but this time the owners are in for over 50%, significantly more than they were before.

The other 29 owners are not going to let Donald Sterling kill the goose laying platinum eggs regardless of whatever claptrap and Magic-centric rants BLT wants to invent from whatever fog his psyche happens to reside in. Sterling's lips signed his NBA death warrant, but his reward will forever dwarf his original investment, as most of his business deals normally do. The man knows business. His lack of people skills and personal understanding were always destined to be his downfall.

#134 | Posted by tonyroma at 2014-04-28 12:38 PM | Reply | Flag: | Newsworthy 1

I think one of the comments that is going to hurt him the most wasn't even overtly racist. The one where she asked him about the black players on his team and he said something like "I make the games. I'm the one who buys them food. Who buys them cars..."

These players have rare talent that is in high demand and would be making the same money whether or not Sterling ever existed. Now they learn that not only are they working for a racist, but a delusional, condescending racist who thinks he's created opportunity for them and is taking care of them and their families.

He's going to have to sell the team because nobody is going to want to play for him. And he'll have to sell it at a discount because his remarks have diminished the brand and put him in a desperate situation where the longer he owns the team, the less it will be worth. And there's a good chance that the NBA will want a person from minority group as one of the prominent buyers. Uncle Babbles' head may explode before this is over...

First sentence, correct. Second? Not at all. The Clippers are now the best team in America's second largest market. Sterling is incapable of diminishing the value of the franchise unless he stubbornly tries to hold onto his team beyond the next few weeks. I wholeheartedly agree that most players, fans, and advertisers will abandon any ship with the Donald at the helm. (For those who don't know, Sterling likes to be called this -- big shock -- its not a dig on Trump)

However, Sterling's "ship" is directly tied to the other 29 teams and the global brand. He is the rotting apple and this group of billionaires will not allow him to spoil the whole bunch. Protecting the values and profits of ALL franchises is JOB ONE and believe me, it will be protected above all others until the problem of Donald Sterling is no longer the NBA's.

If I have time later, I'd like to post some feelings about both Sterling and Bundy that I know will surprise many here on the Retort.

If it hasn't been mentioned before, Donald Sterling's given name is Donald Tokowitz. He changed it to Sterling to forward his business career. I guess it makes sense for an "outsider" who's trying to fit in with the players he wants to be like to internalize that there are truly racial and cultural differences that are endemic to "success in the white world". No one ever told Sterling that prejudice at those levels is merely a convenient weapon for elites to use to keep or gain wealth and power, and that individuals can and do transcend stereotypes regardless of how much evidence exists convincing many that the anecdotes are always true.

"The Clippers are now the best team in America's second largest market. Sterling is incapable of diminishing the value of the franchise unless he stubbornly tries to hold onto his team beyond the next few weeks."

They're going to lose this playoff series. The players are throwing team gear on the floor and wearing it inside out. His ownership of the team makes the team unmarketable and that definitely hurts the value.

"However, Sterling's "ship" is directly tied to the other 29 teams and the global brand. He is the rotting apple and this group of billionaires will not allow him to spoil the whole bunch. Protecting the values and profits of ALL franchises is JOB ONE and believe me, it will be protected above all others until the problem of Donald Sterling is no longer the NBA's."

If he sells right away, the NBA can probably find buyers willing to ignore that he's in a bad spot and they'll pay full price. If he hangs onto the team it will decrease in value and there is nothing the other owners can do about it.

Any loss of value will be reversed the second Sterling ceases to be the owner. The future revenues and marketing opportunities won't spoil or evaporate permanently, they'll just go to someone other than The Donald. The team's value relative to Donald Sterling may decrease, but the actual worth of the franchise will remain the same and likely skyrocket because the entire world knows that Sterling is inarguably one of the WORST owners in the history of professional sports in America!

This business has been mismanaged for decades.

Danni, you know I love you, but why waste your considerable talents trying to impart facts upon those who only see things the way they want to?

Here is the Donald Sterling narrative condensed:

Jewish young man determined to be successful in LA real estate investments changes his name to Sterling. He emulates those whom he idolizes, nominally bigots, ignoramuses, yet extremely successful businessmen making hay in an increasingly minority-occupied LA. There are tangible differences between members of various ethnic groups and these stereotypes become the laws to live and prosper by; and prosper he does, reinforcing his own bigotry as 'business savvy' manifesting in the accumulation of great wealth and access to higher levels of society (if that's one's thing, natch).

Sterling uses his wealth to try and clean-up his own tarnished image, and funds-starved groups stupidly line up to claim his philanthropy and deem him an honored citizen for having supported their causes. The fact that people are trying to tie his feelings to the groups he's selectively given money to miss the point. He only gives money if there is something in it for him, and his political party is himself and his own bank account. It should be obvious to anyone reading more than a few paragraphs of this man's history to discern it differently than it nakedly appears.

Sully,

The League will remove him as owner as soon as they can if he refuses to sell or divest to other family members. Sterling will be the one suing in court because the league will banish him and take over control of the franchise under "the best interests of the NBA clause" in the owner's secret agreement amongst each other.

Sponsors are bailing in droves as we speak and the league is taking an international black eye over Sterling's ignorance. The NBA is a legal monopoly and hence, they make their own rules. Sterling is a deadman walking and though he might win money in court, the team will be taken from him one way or another and very, very, quickly, at least as it comes to the "public face of ownership."

Sterling is now ebola and typhus in a human form. Connection to him is a death sentence and the fallout will continue because the league has known who and what this man is and has been for decades, and they've not raised a finger to sanction him, even as his affronts have multiplied in public court proceedings and amongst his own employees through their documented stories and anecdotes.

"While perhaps Ofari Hutchison's not persuaded that Sterling's done much in fact to help the black community, as LAT's Banks points out, the Clippers owner indeed has a long history of philanthropy for a litany of left-wing causes. Sports Illustrated, back in 2000, ran a major feature story on Sterling, critical of his success as an NBA owner but highlighting his liberal philanthropy, "Up And Down In Beverly Hills":

That's why he got a NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award that was paid for by his foundation after he lost 2.5 million in a lawsuit brought on by people that were rejected when they applied to rent apartments from Sterling due to their race.

In 2003 he was sued for racial discrimination by 19 tenants and the Housing Rights Center. The lawsuit stated that he did not want to rent to Latinos or African Americans because, "Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building," and "black tenants smell and attract vermin."

Perhaps, you seem to think this is an isolated case though..... I doubt it... oh they may not have the money, but they voice it in other ways.......

How do we reconcile this? Why would a racist who doesn't want his girlfriend publicly associating with black men support a political party which claims to represent the best interests of black people? How can a racist be seen by the NAACP to merit recognition for a lifetime of philanthropic achievement?

Psychological projection is "a defense mechanism that involves taking our own unacceptable qualities or feelings and ascribing them to other people." When I encounter people convinced that blacks labors under the weight of insurmountable racism, I suspect they harbor bigotry of their own. They may not express it quite like Donald Sterling, but their worldview brims with the soft bigotry of low expectations.

That's quite a proclamation.

other than for being a racist, are there other reasons why you say that?

I remember watching the movie "8 men out" about the Chicago White Sox scandal in 1919 where they conspired to throw the world series. Setting the players aside, I thought Charlie Comisky was the biggest pr$ck of an owner I had ever seen and I suspect many owners at the time were no different.

So Tony, is the reason why Sterling is the worst owner in the history of professional sports just about the racist comment?

it can't be because he operates a crappy team, is a douchebag in general, or that he did something like change his name. There are tons and tons of team owners current and in the past who are no different.

Is this really a mystery? He's thrown some money around because its good for his image and he likes the attention.

At home, he's a racist who is perfectly comfortable telling a black woman not to embarass him by hanging out with black people. The idea that anyone is projecting when they call him racist is absurd. He's exactly what the taped recording indicates.

Wouldn't submarining his own team during a playoff series qualify on its own? The team has been a laughing stock for decades. Over the last few years they've become the up and coming, "cool" team to root for in LA. And now there are real expectations for the team this year and he basically sinks them in the first round. If he continues to own them, they'll never be good again.

If he were trying to be a worse owner he couldn't do any more.

Organization's who's existence depends upon donations and memberships have often found themselves in dicey relationships with benefactors of unsavory character.

I don't think the NAACP should be held to any different standard than the uncountable organizations who accepted money and funding from disreputable persons trying to polish their murky backgrounds or activities by self-serving public philanthropy.

Legitimacy is the only thing money cannot overtly buy in a single transaction... but far too groups and organizations many are willing to take deposits anyway.
