Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Barack Obama said Friday that top priorities for Congress should be increasing the minimum wage and overhauling the immigration system, while acknowledging that election year politics could complicate the effort. The president and vice president called for sweeping changes to immigration laws, but Republican leaders have all but ruled out passage before the midterm election. Obama urged the Democratic crowd to keep working for it and insisted some Republicans want a deal. "But they're worried, and they're scared about the political blowback. And look, everybody here is an elected official and we can all appreciate the maneuverings that take place, particularly in an election year," Obama said.

The reason I post this article is because I think it is important for us to keep in mind what the stated current legislative priorities of the White House are. All too often we lose sight of that as we discuss/argue about issues we feel should be prioritized. Obama wants to raise the minimum wage and address immigration reform. Those are his top goals.

Let's see if he accomplishes either. The conventional wisdom seems to say that in an election year achieving either goal is a long shot. Especially immigration reform.

I'm still waiting for him to close Gitmo and focus like a laser on the economy.

In regard to Gitmo, you and me both. Hook, line and sinker I believed he was going to close Gitmo when he made that big speech last year. He has been willing to take unilateral action in so many areas. But this is the one area where I feel he should have, - despite the yelling and screaming of both Republicans and faux security interest Democrats in Congress.

How many people working on a Government Contract make less than $10.10 per hour? Free Trade is an economic failure for working Americans. Visa programs such as H1-B are a fraud. Our 1983 Immigration Laws were never enforced until Obama came along (I suspect this was a short term election strategy). You can count all the people in Washington trying to do the right thing for the American economy and its citizens on one hand. People with names like Sanders and Warren.....

so the Adminstrations agenda is

1) Raise the minimum wage, of which only 2% or less of working americans get paid

2) help people who have come hear illegally, who have helped to drive down wages and increase crime. (see #1)

Wow focusing on criminals and the dumbest 2% of our society, sound like a winning strategy to me.

Great point DANV!

If we had only elected Mitt, wages would be rising naturally without any artificial government interference with the free marketplace.

Instead we worry about dumb people and criminals.

Slick talking politicians like Obama have an ability to speak out of both sides of their mouth while convincing a clueless constituency to believe what they say is in their interest. These are two conflicting priorities.

Simply end H1B immigration and enforce the current laws against illegal immigrants, and the wages for every American will go up significantly without raising the minimum wage. Actually fixing the problem, involves enforcing laws and a free market for legal USA labor, instead of the 35 years and pro corporate unfair labor market using a bottomless pit of illegal and temporary non-USA labor.

But that doesn't work with an agenda of deception.

Goes into effect over the course of 3 years. Don't worry pubs, by then 10.10 an hour will still be poverty level.

You will still be able to enjoy a steak knowing that others are not. Relax.

How about prosecuting Wall Street? Ending the surveillance/national security state? Ending the war on some drugs and ending the prison-industrial state? Restoring "core constitutional liberties"? Closing hundreds of military bases?

No hope and chump change from this wimp.

Once again Obama forces his liberal socialist agenda of getting things done on the American people.

Watched about a hour of the Morning Joe this morning and the new "hate the rich plan" was on full display. Nothing makes my morning like hearing Eugene Robinson talk about how we must address income inequality because it is the biggest problem we face today. My gag reflex was in fine form this morning.

minimum wage will always be at or near poverty, regardless of how much you raise it.

It's as if some leftists don't get that basic point. They really think you can just raise minimum wage above the poverty level and BAM! nobody is in poverty anymore that earns only minimum wage.

what a bunch of morons.

No, my investment income is big enough to pay my cable bill. No safety nets for self employed. Remember that next time you are accusing business owners of being greedy 1%ers.

Most business owners aren't one percenters.. and many one percenters aren't business owners. But none of that fits in your bubble.

I think most of the left struggles with that...

#18 | Posted by eberly

I don't know anyone on the left that believes that. But I see a lot of people on the right assigning such positions to those on the left.

If the republicans want to regain power, they're going to have to offer anyone who wants it citizenship, and then pay them for the privilege. And they must do this before the democrats do. Because there is no more loyal a voter than one who has been bought.

That's exactly what society expected and wanted, but Obama and the Democratic Party leadership are politicians and owned by the NYC banksters and others that are profiteering off of these policies. Politicians do what helps them get reelected, and handing out citizenship cards to illegals that prolongs cheap labor for the fat cats gets them votes and bribes.

The only thing dumber and meaner than Obama's agenda are the idiots that call it a "liberal socialist agenda."

Ten nations with a liberal socialist agenda all have a higher standard of living than the United States. Luxembourg($106,406), Qatar*, Norway($99,170), Switzerland, Australia($67,304), Denmark, Sweden($54,815), Canada, Singapore, USA ($51,704), Germany ($41,866) Socialism is a resounding success.

*Hardly liberal, but definately a socialist monarchy.

Under Obama oil production is at an all time high, pollution control has been curtailed, deficits are down, employment is down, extrajudicial killing is ongoing if not as extreme as Shrub, Guantanamo is open, FreeTrade is expanding......all part of a conservative agenda, a proven failure.

What country do you live in?

oil production is at an all time high only on private land where bho has no control.

pollution control has been curtailed only in your wildest dreams.

deficits are down to $1 trillion this year.

employment is down - you got that right. Lowest labor participation rate since carter got drummed out of office.

Meaningless posturing. Immigration is bs because the economy needs cheap labor, nor will raising the minimum wage change anything because the systems of capture of capital are fascist.

i.e. a lot of talk.
