Choi and senior author Philippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at HSPH, and their colleagues collated the epidemiological studies of children exposed to fluoride from drinking water. The China National Knowledge Infrastructure database also was included to locate studies published in Chinese journals. They then analyzed possible associations with IQ measures in more than 8,000 children of school age; all but one study suggested that high fluoride content in water may negatively affect cognitive development.

Author Info

The average loss in IQ was reported as a standardized weighted mean difference of 0.45, which would be approximately equivalent to seven IQ points for commonly used IQ scores with a standard deviation of 15.* Some studies suggested that even slightly increased fluoride exposure could be toxic to the brain. Thus, children in high-fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low-fluoride areas. The children studied were up to 14 years of age, but the investigators speculate that any toxic effect on brain development may have happened earlier, and that the brain may not be fully capable of compensating for the toxicity.

You have two job applicants. One has nice shiny teeth and is an A student. The other has a row of brown soft teeth where there aren't gaps, but has an A+ average. Who you gonna choose?

No wonder math majors all seem to have bad teeth.

Does anyone here know how Fluoridation allegedly "prevents" tooth decay?

#4 Well there is a study by the American Chemical Society that says fluoride hardens tooth enamel, but no data on tooth decay rates.

All the tooth decay studies seem to show fluoride and non-fluoride rates too both be declining in tooth decay.

It's not to hard to google.

No it doesn't.

the Egyptians, royalty & peasants, lost the enamel of their teeth from grit in their bread, a byproduct from the millstones used in the processing of their grain. it was a painful malady.

i was given tetracycline as a child before my permanent teeth came in. i still have my deformed, gray teeth though. lovely smile (my dad was of the non~litigious sort.)

regarding this topic, the chemical hexafluorosilicic acid is used to dose drinking water & it is a byproduct of fertilizer production. It is illegal to dump the chemical into the environment. Below is link of email correspondence between a concerned consumer of a municipal water supply dosed with hexafluorosilicic acid & the obstruction encountered in discovering its exact source & safety reguations of production (in the UK, i believe).

I'm very alarmed with the existing neurological dangers of fluoridation. Okay, so the molecules are attaching to enzymes used in bacteriological reproduction on enamel surface which can slow tooth decay from acids excreted, but this process also stops re-mineralization so teeth never get harder. Interesting.
