Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, February 09, 2014

Vancouver is the home to Canada's first-ever crack pipe vending machines, which were installed in the city's troubled downtown east side in a bid to curb the spread of disease among drug users. Portland Hotel Society's Drug Users Resource Center operates two of the machines. They dispense Pyrex crack pipes for just 25 cents. Kailin See, director of the DURC, said the pipes are very durable and less likely to chip and cut drug users' mouths, which helps stop the spread communicable diseases including HIV and hepatitis C. "This is one piece of the larger puzzle," See said. "You have to have treatment, you have to have detox, you have to have safe spaces to use your drug of choice, and you have to have safe and clean supplies."

Does Canada have more hippie types than America?

I was under the impression that Canadians are better educated and more socially and environmentally responsible than their illiterate neighbors?

There'a whole lot you don't know, buddy.

The Dark Side of our cousins to the north. Perhaps now we know why Ted Cruz has such a hard time separating himself from them.

I have difficulty understanding the up-side of smoking crack, or making it more convenient to smoke crack. Any suggestions?

It's an expansion of the needle exchange program Vancouver has had for years.

I sure hope this effort was privatized so some crony can be making bucks off of it.

"I sure hope this effort was privatized..."

Of course it's private. The government has nothing to do with it.

I lived in Van east side for 6 months in the 80s....the need for help with the street hypes and heads is and was great...Van is a city ahead of all others with its approach to the problems at hand!

That's true enough, but I'm still keeping a lot of distance between East Hastings and myself.

Perhaps you should read, or think, if you're capable. Anyone depraved enough to smoke crack is going to do so regardless of the availability of clean pipes. So you might as well give them a clean pipe to reduce the risk of spreading disease.

Some are going to smoke crack regardless of what Zed thinks about it. This is about controlling what you can instead of ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn't exist.

People who are addicted to crack do not choose whether to use it based on how convenient it is to use a safer pipe. The pipe is designed to reduce health problems associated with smoking crack.

Are you really so obtuse that you couldn't figure that out?

Yes, JOE. And that is a weeping shame for you, for me, for the families of the chemically dependent, and most especailly for the kids.

Sucks to be Vancouver.

I asked what the upside of smoking crack was. To this point, none of you has advanced one.

Except, perhaps, that the addict has access to sanitary pipes in Vancouver.

God damn drugs.

#19 | Posted by Zed at 2014-02-10 02:01 PM | Reply | Flag:

You also asked for an upside to making crack-smoking more convenient, which is what the responses to you addressed, which you are now ignoring.

#20 | Posted by JOE at 2014-02-10 03:36 PM | Reply | Flag:

**** It's called "Harm Reduction" with the premise that addicts are going to do drugs no matter what.Providing addicts with clean syringes and pipes helps prevent the spread of infections and diseases that would end up costing many millions in medical care - so it's also an economic strategy!

Do you have difficulty understanding the up-side of making it less harmful to smoke crack, or use any drug?

Because that's what the article is about.

Let us know if you also have difficulty understanding the up-side of putting seat belts in cars.

Less harmful? In that they kill themselves one month later than expected, on average?

Oh, I absoultely understand the principle these guys are working on here with their pipe dispensers. Do you understand how sadly morbid it is?

Let us insure that the needle is always sterilzed prior to lethal injection.

Sucks to be Vancouver. But, to concede a point, sucks worse to be Detroit.

So you don't favor health interventions that make you "sad?"
Let me guess: you oppose abortion, no exceptions.
