Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, February 07, 2014

The U.S. economy added just 113,000 jobs in January, a small improvement over December's disappointing report but not nearly enough to signal a much-needed rebound in the increasingly unpredictable U.S. labor market. The headline unemployment rate was 6.6%, according to figures released by the U.S. Labor Department, down from 6.7% in the prior month. The labor participation rate, a key gauge of the percentage of working-age Americans currently employed, was 63%, up from 62.8% in December.

STFU Boaz. All of those unemployed now have true economic freedom and are at home as we speak trying to think up a business to start.

Next Obama will claim 100% employment b/c the unemployed will just be deciding to stay home so they can tuck their kids in. Or that they work from home.

Do not take my response as acknowledgement that I'm a liberal, but what exactly were you expecting from someone that you didn't vote for? And another question, did you really expect anything different from the person that you did vote for?

Why would we do that?

We were LOSING 800k jobs in '08-'09 and now we are gaining 113k a month. A net gain of over 900k. We are currently still gaining jobs at a higher level than '03.

A hand full of disappointing numbers does not mean the economy is stalling. Just wishful thinking your part (GOD knows why).

AND if the GOTP would keep their damn feet off the brakes we might just make a go of it this year.

We are gaining jobs per month, I want to see stats showing this.

You do know to gain jobs one has to take amount of jobs lost with jobs gained...right, you do know that.

The deceit never ends from these Obama minions, and what is getting really laughable is Obama is begging congress to address the unemployment bill extended so his numbers won't look even more absurd.

there is no job creation, it is a slight of convoluted stat taking that makes it appear to have job creation.

As more drop off the payroll of unemployment the better the jobs numbers look because they drop off the stat.

Wall mart announced it is laying off 13000 people and isn't it amazing that lost jobs is only 13000 people.

Bad numbers are praised here by Obama minions, they are like Baghdad bob, everything is falling around and still announcing things they don't see.

I won't mind though, cause as things crumble around and the Obama minions keep the praise it will end in what a horrible president Obama is and how lame the democrat party.

I'm assuming you know that most people only pay about $1000 (if that much) towards their unemployment insurance per year. So you'd have to work a long ass time to collect for over two years of unemployment. Which this may not be the first time that some of the current people collecting have collected.

#27 | Posted by T_Man at 2014-02-07 07:37 PM | Reply | Flag:

The only folks happy about the disappointing numbers are you folks so you can continue your narrative of hate.

Being as how the whole Global economy slumped and now we are back on top I'd say we are doing OK grading on a bell curve.

And as I said before we could do better.

Imagine... now that the GOTP has quit trying to shut down the government and repeal the ACA 50 times... how much we can get done in areas that really need our attention instead.

And it will be nice to have a functional government with an actual budget for a change for the next two years.

Or you can keep playing Eeyore and crying about how risky it all is and how it will never work.

That's so helpful.

Point being you can look at the numbers and find bad news or you can look at the numbers and find good news.

Now those job lost populous is falling of benefits the stats are making it look better so they praise.

What isn't noticed is all those people out of work see the deceitful praise and will take notice next election, they realize bush was the beginning but now know the democrats are not interested in being help in putting America back to work. Don't count on clueless Americans remembering much of anything in politics.

It takes 158,000 new jobs a month just to keep up with our population growth. Service jobs, which cannot be offshored, are replacing good paying jobs in industry, a persistent trend for decades, because of deeply flawed bi-partisan policies. Policies which are deliberately designed to enrich Corporations at the expense of working people.

But none of this will be discussed in the mass media. The TPP will not be discussed in mainstream media. The true state of the economy, trade imbalance, budget deficit, unemployment rate, inflation rate, bailout size, damage inflicted on foreigners, will never be revealed to the American public. The recovery is a "fraud" achieved by lunderstating inflation.

How do I know these things? By reading honest experts on the right and left. They are outnumbered and outshouted, but they are there if you want to learn the truth.

Unemployment rate is irrelevant. It doesn't count those off the rolls.

#45 | Posted by Shawn at 2014-02-07 10:28 PM | Reply | Flag:

The unemployment rate in 2012 in all occupations is higher than it was before the recession. In every occupational category demand for workers is lower than it was five years ago. Workers with a college degree or more still have unemployment rates that are more than one-and-a-half times as high as they were before the recession began.

Elevated unemployment is due to a general lack of demand in the job market, fueled by overarching economic decline. This is not a problem that can merely be addressed by retraining workers or revamping the education system. Blaming the "skills gap" for unemployment makes about as much sense as blaming a mass famine on "excess hunger.

Washington looks more like a gap in knowledge about how the economy actually works. If legislators' idea is to break out of America's downward spiral, they shouldn't blame workers for not having what it takes to "deserve" to be employed. Instead, policymakers ought to acknowledge the fundamentals of matching people with jobs: it's not just about their usefulness to the economy, but whether the economy is healthy enough to make use of them. (M Chen)

The economy and job creation continue to be crippled by the impact of conservative austerity policies. Federal and state spending have been cut over a series of ‘deficit reduction' and sequestration agreements forced on the country by right-wing legislators who care more about their rigid ideology than about healthy investment and growth.

Are people who have quit looking for jobs not counted as unemployed?o in the reported unemployment percentage cited another instance of a government ploy to make things look better than they are? Is the reported CPI another evidence of the same behavior in leaving food and fuel out of the index? Is our society and economy in a disincentive mode where industriousness is punished and idleness rewarded? Is loss of integrity from top to bottom in our society now the norm?

I wouldn't dream of cutting my hours just to get a subsidy. There's no way any subsidy could make up the difference in what I have to pay out every month just for the standard necessities of life. Subsidies don't affect the amount of my mortgage, or car payment, or life insurance premiums, or food, or college tuition, or credit cards, clothing, gas, home repairs, vacations, pool service . . . or even the kid who cuts my grass.

Every time I hear some rightly suggesting that people will work less to get a subsidy, I have to wonder if they're living in a cardboard box beneath an overpass. Because certainly they don't seem to be aware of all the other things that necessitate a full paycheck.

"But losing jobs is a good thing. It creates fodder for people to start a small business."

It exposes their ignorance. The primary reason for business failure is lack of capital. I don't think too many of those losing jobs have a lot of capital, besides, what are they gonna live on while getting all those permits, licenses etc. Remember, kids can't even operate lemonade stands without government inspections, fees, permits and other roadblocks.
The second biggest cause of failure is poor management skills and, BOY are we seeing that with the operation of the present administration. Personally, I've never seen so much waste and ineptness. If this WAS a business, it would have gone belly up in the first six months of 2009.
